Changes In World Food Markets
How swiftly the world market for food can change could be observed in the mid-2000s. For two decades, leading up to the millennium, global demand for food had increased steadily, along with growth in the worlds population, record harvests, new technologies, improvements in incomes, and the diversification of diets. Food prices continued to decline through 2000. However, in 2004, prices for most grains began to rise. Rising production could not keep pace with the even stronger growth in demand. Food stocks became depleted. And then, in 2005, food supply was squeezed by disappointing harvests in major food-producing countries. By 2006, world cereal production had fallen by 2.1 per cent. In 2007, rapid increases in oil prices increased fertilizer and other food production costs.
As international food prices reached unprecedented levels, countries sought ways to insulate themselves from potential food shortages and price shocks. Several food-exporting countries imposed export restrictions. Certain key importers began purchasing grains at any price to maintain domestic supplies. However, it also became evident that the global economic crisis in 2008 and 2009 undermined food security in many countries.
The Sustainable Development Goals And Food
Food is at the core of the Sustainable Development Goals , the UN’s development agenda for the 21st century. The second of the UN’s 17 SDGs is to “End hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture.” Achieving this goal by the target date of 2030 will require a profound change of the global food and agriculture system. Some of the components of this goal are:
- Ending hunger, and ensuring access by all people to safe, nutritious food
- Ending all forms of malnutrition
- Doubling the agricultural productivity and incomes of small-scale food producers
- Ensuring sustainable food production systems
- Increasing investment in agriculture
Canada And The World Food Programme
The World Food Programme is the food-assistance arm of the United Nations, addressing global hunger and urgent food needs by providing life-saving humanitarian assistance to vulnerable populations around the world. Its reach is extensive: in 2021, direct assistance was provided to a record 128.2 million people in 80 countries.
The WFP also leads logistics operations whenever a humanitarian emergency requires a joint response from UN agencies and the humanitarian community. This includes providing passenger air transport to the entire humanitarian community through the United Nations Humanitarian Air Service.
The WFP also works in longer-term rehabilitation and development contexts, where their efforts focus on school-feeding programs, building resilience and supporting social-protection efforts.

Fighting Hunger Today Investing In Ending Hunger For Good
As the world faces a record number of emergencies, the rate of hunger is increasing. Now, more people than ever need lifesaving food assistance. To meet this growing need, the World Food Programme requires additional resources and funding.
In the next 5 years, we have an ambitious goal to share 800 million meals. To do this, we need to invest in growing our giving community. Here’s how your donation will help:
The largest share of donations 62% will be used to directly help the World Food Programme feed people in need. We will invest 28% into fundraising and marketing to grow our community so that we can help even more people. 6% will still be used to help run our organisation from renting office space to paying salaries. The remaining 4% will continue to help cover payment fees.
As we grow, well be able to cover our costs while increasing the amount that goes directly to hungry families. In line with WFPs strategic plan, an average of 22% will be spent on fundraising from 2020-2030.

Common Questions About The Un Freerice Game

Is Freerice legitimate?
Yes! Freerice is an educational trivia game that helps you get smarter while making a difference for people around the world. Every question you answer correctly raises 10 grains of rice for the World Food Programme to support its work saving and changing lives around the world.
Does Freerice actually donate rice? Where does the money go?
Rice is a metaphor used to make the game tangible for players. Although some rice is indeed purchased as part of WFPs food assistance programs, the funds generated through the game support WFPs programs overall, where needs are greatest, not specifically the purchasing of rice. Every right answer on the game generates the equivalent of ten grains of rice as payment towards the United Nations World Food Programmes operations in over 80 countries around the world.
How is money donated?
Private sponsors match the rice grain donations generated within Freerice, triggering a financial payment to WFP. This money goes into the pot of greatest needs to support the organizations ongoing emergencies. 100% of all funds generated via Freerice go to the World Food Programme. Freerice does not earn or keep any money it raises.
What is the U.N. World Food Programme?
WFP is the largest humanitarian organization in the world, fighting hunger globally by delivering food to people suffering from hunger and starvation.

The Millennium Development Goals And Food
In 2000, world leaders gathered at the United Nations to shape a broad vision to fight poverty, which was translated into eight Millennium Development Goals . This remained, until 2015, the overarching development framework for the world. The global mobilization behind the Millennium Development Goals has produced the most successful anti-poverty movement in history. The MDG target of reducing by half the proportion of people living in extreme poverty was achieved in 2010, well ahead of the 2015 deadline. The proportion of undernourished people in the developing regions fell by almost half. However, a lot more work needs to be done. That work is now the focus of the Sustainable Development Goals.

Ocha Central Emergency Response Fund
CERF was introduced in 2006 as the UNs global emergency response fund to deliver funding quickly to humanitarian responders and kick-start life-saving action whenever and wherever crisis hit. Ten years on, CERF has proven to be one of the most effective ways to provide time-critical assistance, including supplies, basic services and protection to millions of people in need.
A Global Hunger Crisis
Up to 828 million people more one in ten of the world’s population still go to bed hungry each night. Acute food insecurity has reached unprecedented highs, affecting a record 349 million people up from 135 million in 2019.
A deadly combination of conflict, economic shocks, climate extremes and soaring fertilizer prices is at the root of soaring numbers. The economic fallout of the COVID-19 pandemic, and then the war in Ukraine, has pushed prices up and put food out of reach for millions of people across the world. At the same time, high fertilizer prices are causing a falling production of maize, rice, soybean and wheat.
These rising costs are also affecting WFPs work. At the start of 2022, the price WFP was paying for food was up by 30 percent compared to 2019, and the cost of delivering it had risen by an additional US$42 million a month. Since the outbreak of conflict in Ukraine, WFP has been forced to pay US$73.6 million more a month for operations than in 2019 a staggering 44 percent rise.
While Asia is home to the greatest number of undernourished people at 418 million, Africa is the region with the highest prevalence of undernourishment in percentage terms, at 21 percent. This is more than double the rate in all regions, according to the latest edition of the State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World. See also: A global food crisis

Additional Us Contribution To The World Food Programme
Press Statement
We announced today that, through USAIDs continued partnership with the World Food Programme , the U.S. Government will contribute more than $68 million to support the procurement, transport, and storage of up to 150,000 metric tons of Ukrainian wheat to address acute food insecurity. This sum represents the latest in more than $5.4 billion in humanitarian contributions from the United States this fiscal year. The purchase of 150,000 metric tons of wheat builds on an initial WFP shipment of 23,000 metric tons of Ukrainian wheat and will support the humanitarian response in the Horn of Africa, where a historic drought is pushing millions of people to the brink of starvation.
While the resumption of exports from Ukraines Black Sea ports is a positive step in addressing the needs of food insecure countries, these shipments must continue so that the millions of tons of food trapped in the country can reach markets and help feed the worlds most vulnerable.

Humanitarian Fallout From War In Ukraine Darkens Davos Meeting
The families were all living underground, in a basement, with improvised wood stoves for heating, says Ward, the World Food Programmes Deputy Country Director in Ukraine, of the visit with other United Nations partners.
There were about 68 children living in that environment, she adds. Thats not an appropriate way to spend a really cold winter.
The frontlines of Ukraine, which nears the first anniversary of a devastating war, are more than 2,000 kilometers from Davos, Switzerland, where world leaders and influencers are attending this weeks World Economic Forum, or WEF.
But the wars fallout which has sent global food and energy costs soaring, deepening hunger especially in the poorest countries, and pushing many nations into recession tops the Davos agenda. A recent WEF survey found the cost-of-living crisis is considered to-days biggest global risk ahead of the catastrophic, longer-term threats of biodiversity loss and climate change.
We’re facing an unprecedented food and nutrition crisis right now and it’s hitting women and young children the hardest, tweeted WFPs Executive Director David Beasley ahead of Davos, at a time when 828 million people are uncertain about their next meal. Together we can, and must, give them a chance to survive and thrive.
Meanwhile, air raid warnings send humanitarian staff and ordinary Ukrainians alike diving into shelters for hours on end.

The World Food Programmes Contribution To Improving The Prospects For Peace In Lebanon
This report aims to provide a better understanding of the World Food Programmes contribution to improving the prospects for peace in Lebanon. Specifically, the report investigates where and how WFPs cash-based transfer interventions in the country make potential peace contributions and looks at how these contributions could be further developed.
The findings are based on a review of programme documents, in-depth interviews with a range of stakeholders and field visits to project sites in Lebanon in 2021. The findings suggest that WFPs CBT interventions canand dopositively contribute to improving the prospects for peace in Lebanon. However, the conflict and peacebuilding environment in Lebanon is extremely complex and rife with uncertainties. With this in mind, the report emphasizes the importance of taking conflict sensitivity concerns into account and provides 13 recommendations on how WFPs contribution to peace in Lebanon could be enhanced.
