What To Donate To A Food Bank And What To Avoid

Mexican Moms Rank Frozen Thanksgiving Dinners

So, youre ready to donate food to your local food bank. Thats great! Whether youre starting a food drive or just planning to grab a few extra items for donation while out grocery shopping, there are a couple of things you should know about what you can donate and what food banks wont accept.

What food you CAN donate to your local food bank:

This part is pretty easy. Food banks accept dry and canned food donations. What does that mean? Basically, any food that is shelf-stable or nonperishable you can keep it in your pantry and it wont go bad. And remember, only donate food that hasnt reached its sell-by date yet. Specifically, food banks often need items like:

Thats definitely not an exhaustive list but it covers a lot of what food banks regularly need. Additionally, some food banks accept personal care and household items, since many families struggle to afford these items and they arent covered by other food assistance programs like SNAP.

If youre still stumped about what to donate, just look in your own pantry. Families struggling with hunger often cant afford the staples that we normally have stocked at home. So, check your pantry out and go from there. Even specialty foods like olive oil, dressings, or marinades can be helpful if they dont need to be refrigerated.

The Foodbank Of Southeastern Virginia And The Eastern Shores Primary Mission Is Leading The Effort To Eliminate Hunger In Our Community Heres How We Do It

Collecting FundsFor every $10 donation the Foodbank receives, we can assemble and distribute up to $60 worth of grocery products. Thanks to our purchasing power through bulk ordering, monetary donations go even further. While food drives and donations are always needed, monetary donations allow us to purchase food that is needed but not always donated such as meats and fresh produce. Your monetary donations help provide balanced meals to our community while also supporting the operations of our partner agencies and programs.

Collecting Food DonationsWe provide nutritious fresh, frozen, canned, boxed, and prepared food to over hundreds of thousands of individuals annually. This food is recovered and secured from restaurants, supermarkets, food distributors, the USDA, farmers, wholesalers, sportsmen, and through food and fund drives.

Committed VolunteersEvery time you volunteer with the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia, you know that you have helped put food on the table of our neighbors in need. Volunteers are critical in our efforts to provide healthy, nutritious food to our community, so please consider helping out as an individual, small group or organization.

Safe Food Handling Practices

Although training is not a requirement for preparing food donations, food safety classes explain the food safety precautions required with feeding large groups. Many local health agencies, WSU Cooperative Extension offices, and food industry associations give short classes on food safety.

A knowledgeable group leader with food safety training and a Washington State Food Worker Card, if possible, should be selected to organize the food preparation efforts. Children under 10 years old should only handle wrapped foods, raw produce, and raw dry food staples to limit the potential for food safety errors. Food workers who are ill should not handle or prepare food.

Proper handwashing facilities and supplies must be convenient for all food handlers.

All food handlers should wash their hands before beginning work, and after:

  • Going to the restroom.
  • Hands become dirty.
Preventing Bare Hand Contact

To prevent the spread of germs, it is important to keep bare hands from touching foods that will not be cooked or washed before being eaten. Utensils or gloves can be used to prevent bare hand contact. Utensils need to be cleaned and sanitized between uses.

Food Storage
Food Transportation
Potentially Hazardous Foods

Certain foods, called potentially hazardous foods, let bacteria grow quickly. It is important to keep these foods at safe temperatures to prevent bacteria from growing.

How To Calculate The Value Of Your Tax

Now comes the tricky part. How much can you deduct from your taxes? There are a couple of rules to keep in mind:

  • If you donate cash to a food bank, make sure you get proper documentation. This could be in the form of a canceled check or receipt. If your donation is at least $250, you will need an official receipt from the charity that confirms the amount you gave.
  • The process isnt as straightforward for food you donate from your kitchen or purchase from the grocery store for the express purpose of giving. The general rule is that the amount you can deduct is the foods fair market value. So, if you donate $100 worth of groceries, you can deduct $100. If you bought the items on sale and only spent $70, you can still deduct the entire $100 based on the fair market value formula of the groceries.
  • If you operate a food-based business like a restaurant, grocery store, etc., you must submit a Donation of Food Inventory Worksheet to the IRS. Theres also an additional statement youll have to obtain from the donee confirming that they wont resell the food you donated.
