Every meal is prepared and cooked by professional chefs with help from the men residing in our transitional housing program. We do our best to serve a balanced plate of protein, vegetables, carbohydrates, and fruit at every meal. It is difficult to predict what we might get donated so our chefs have to be creative with the daily menus. What should we make with a donated pallet of eggplant today? Learning how to cook for those in need helps our residents build soft job skills and gain self-worth.
Sw Hope Community Food Drive
Since 2007, Neighborhood House has held the SW HOPE community food drive to combat the sharp decline in food donations that occurs after the new year begins. We partner with local faith communities, businesses, and schools to keep the spirit of generosity flowing in order to fully stock the shelves of the Neighborhood House Food Pantry.

Urban Gleaners: Urban Gleaners gathers donations from individuals, grocery stores, catering companies, and restaurants to help build meals for food-insecure families across the city. Why We Offer Home Delivery
Since the COVID-19 pandemic, we have continued to do our due diligence to take precautionary measures that help to protect our clients, volunteers, and the people we serve.
As such, both of our food pantries are continuing to offer a temporary emergency food box distribution method. This change ensures that all clients may still receive emergency food without coming in direct contact with others. Food boxes are available near each facility entrance and do not require families or individuals to have direct exposure with others when picking up.

For individual/personal donations: We accept canned food items no more than 4 years expired. Shelf stable dairy items must be no more than 1 year expired. We cannot accept anything already open . All items must be in clean, unopened condition.

Impact: One full green bag equals about ten meals. We combine your bag with your neighbors bags, and together we can feed the community!
Soup Kitchens Pantries And Shelters
Potluck in the Park: Every Sunday, a team of volunteers gather under the Hawthorne Bridge and distribute meals for those in need. Its barrier-free, which means anyone can show up and collect food. Visit the donation page to provide financial aid.
Sisters of the Road: This community cafe normally runs on a barter system, offering a meal for either $1.50 or an equivalent amount of work for the cafe itself. However, considering the current state of the world, Sisters of the Road is currently serving free meals to those in need from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday, and accepting donations through its website.

How We Lower Our Impact On The Environment While Serving Those In Most Need
An astounding amount of valuable food40%is wasted in America. At the same time, more than 550,000 Oregonians are not secure in their access to food. Blanchet House has developed an innovative system to rescue excess fresh food, get it to people who need it, and keep it from going to waste.
In an average month, we collect and receive more than 30,000 pounds of perfectly good unexpired food from local restaurants, grocery stores, wholesalers, and bakeries. There are many reasons why good food goes to waste, from stores overbuying to the publics misunderstanding of expiration dates, but we have found a way to use it to benefit our community.
Reduce Food Waste: A Closed Loop Food Cycle
We can store only so much food in our refrigerators and there are always food scraps involved with meal preparation so we must compost and discard of tons of food somewhere. This is how a few very hungry animals at and another local farm help create a closed food loop cycle. Food scraps are driven to the farms where its processed and fed to animals. Pigs, goats, and chickens were responsible for keeping 63 tons of food out of landfills in 2019.

Its a very large and transformational sum, Fogg said.
Staff immediately began thinking about how to share the bounty and began by increasing grants to partner organizations. The food bank even launched an arm called Harvesting Good that will sell frozen vegetables, starting with Maine-grown broccoli, to increase food output and bolster the states agriculture economy.
Good Shepherd also set some of the money aside and will decide how to spend it over the next three to five years.
Fogg said Scotts team is very hands-off once the money is transferred. All they ask, she said, is for three years of short annual reports describing how the money is used.
Its founded in a lot of trust, Fogg said. Its a vote of confidence in our work and the work thats happening across the state.
Leonard said she hopes the Maine Health Access Foundation also will earn that trust when its money comes through in January. She declined to speculate on how it might be spent and said decisions will be made in consultation with the organizations board, partner groups and others.
