Tips For Successful Food Donations
Group together multiple food items to donate, rather than offering just one small package of pancake mix which will not go very far if the shelter feeds more than 100 people per day. If you don’t have much to personally donate, ask friends or neighbors to pitch in, or organize a food drive among like-minded folks at a church or coffee shop you frequent. Several large boxes of assorted items can come in handy to a commercial-style shelter kitchen. Unopened cans or bags of coffee are almost always welcome at shelters that accept food. Many shelters receive a bulk of their donations around the winter holiday season and go in need during the summer months, so consider ramping up your donations during the summer season.

Litwicki said the model utilizes low barrier shelters and transitional housing to get homeless people off the streets.
Lots of shelters require people to behave in certain ways that are outside of their mental and physical abilities. They may not be able to stay sober or abide by certain rules immediately, so they cycle in and out of shelters. We need to get them some sort of housing and then work on the other issues. They need stability so they can get healthy, said Litwicki.
Old Pueblo is facilitating that plan with the Center for Housing First, slated to begin construction in January with a budget of $3 million. The 20,000-square-foot facility located at 2323 S. Park Ave. will provide an epicenter for support services to undercut the root causes of homelessness.
The center will offer outreach, case management, housing navigation, employment services, peer- and behavioral-health outpatient services and more. It will also feature collaborative efforts with Pima County One-Stop, El Rio Health and the Tucson Police Department.
A capital campaign is underway to raise $2 million still needed for the project and Litwicki is hoping for support from the community.

What To Donate To A Food Bank And What To Avoid
So, youre ready to donate food to your local food bank. Thats great! Whether youre starting a food drive or just planning to grab a few extra items for donation while out grocery shopping, there are a couple of things you should know about what you can donate and what food banks wont accept.
What food you CAN donate to your local food bank:
This part is pretty easy. Food banks accept dry and canned food donations. What does that mean? Basically, any food that is shelf-stable or nonperishable you can keep it in your pantry and it wont go bad. And remember, only donate food that hasnt reached its sell-by date yet. Specifically, food banks often need items like:
Thats definitely not an exhaustive list but it covers a lot of what food banks regularly need. Additionally, some food banks accept personal care and household items, since many families struggle to afford these items and they arent covered by other food assistance programs like SNAP.
If youre still stumped about what to donate, just look in your own pantry. Families struggling with hunger often cant afford the staples that we normally have stocked at home. So, check your pantry out and go from there. Even specialty foods like olive oil, dressings, or marinades can be helpful if they dont need to be refrigerated.

Dont Donate What You Wont Wear
A general rule of thumb when donating clothes is to not donate what you wont wear. Clothes that are heavily stained or have rips and tears should be donated to a material recycling facility, not to the homeless. I mean, theyre already at the lowest point in their lives. Giving them tattered clothes is like rubbing salt on their wounds. Instead of helping, you could end up insulting them.

The non-profit feeds 150 people every day, and Thursday was no exception.

Huntley volunteered alongside his Gamecock brothers to feed the community as well as distribute stocking stuffers and gifts provided by donors.
The people there were not only grateful but prideful of the town they call home.

Food Parcel Donations Can Help Homeless People At Christmas
During the festive period, Estonia’s homeless shelters fill up quickly. Social support centers and churches alike are doing what they can to provide help homeless people with food parcels thanks to donations from the public,
Residents of the Tallinn Social Work Center on Kauge tänav are gathered around the Christmas tree waiting for Estonian Santa Claus “jõuluvana” to arrive.
This year, several separate Christmas parties will be held as it’s hard to find a room big enough to fit all the shelter’s residents in at once.
“We have more than 600 people, so some would miss out. That’s why the units do their own Christmas dinners and entertain people or hand out parcels, as much as possible. It should also feel like a home from home,” said Kersti Põldemaa, director of Tallinn Social Work Centre.
The people staying in the center’s accommodation units do not have their own homes to go. In such challenging times, it has become noticeable that places in shelters are filling up fast.
According to the results of the recent census, the number of homeless people in Estonia has risen slightly, says Põldemaa. Currently, there are estimated to be around 60 such people in Tallinn alone.
Homeless and disadvantaged people are invited to St. Olaf’s Church in Tallinn for a special Christmas service, which takes place each year before New Year’s Eve. This year, donations of sweets and other foods are already piling up at the church.
