My name is Miguel Huerta, and my pronouns are he/him/his. I am proud to be serving the Roadrunners of MSU Denver. As a Chicano who was born and raised in Denver, I am thrilled to be home after 6 years of working and living in Philadelphia. I attained a Masters of Social Work from the University of Pennsylvania and hold a certificate in Trauma Informed Practices from Bryn Mawr School of Social Work.I haveserved youth and young adults in a variety of settings including alternative education, non-profits, and grassroots community efforts. Ialso serve youth transitioning from the criminal justice system back into the community and teach in the MSU Denver Social Work Department.

I am a Chicago native and have been in Colorado for 13 years. I was a hairdresser for 24 years when I decided to up end my life and start school at 38 years old. The COVID-19 pandemic created challenging times for us all, but perhaps no one more than for those in our community who are at-risk and vulnerable. Thats why the Feed Colorado campaign is more important than ever.
Your donations of nonperishable food items rice, beans, pasta, soups, peanut butter, cereal, canned goods are making a world of difference in countless peoples lives.
Thanks to you, we can feed Colorado families for an entire year. Weve teamed up with local companies and organizations statewide to support our communities that experience food hardship. Seniors and families with children in the home experience the most difficulty between balancing buy groceries and paying their bills. What Type Of Food Does We Dont Waste Accept
We take safe, consumable, and unused foods! This includes a wide variety of foods, including fresh fruit, greens, vegetables, meats, dairy, shelf-stable products, baked goods, desserts, prepared foods, frozen foods, snacks, beverages, bottled water, and vegan products.
Short dated items , items out of code, mislabeled items, damaged items or pallets, bulk items , and overages/excess items are all acceptable as well!

What Is Denver Food Rescue
Denver Food Rescues main goal is to increase health equity in Denver neighborhoods by rescuing high-quality, fresh produce and perishable foods that would otherwise be thrown away by grocery stores, farmers markets, produce distributors and local gardens. With the help of volunteers, the food they rescue is delivered to Denver neighborhoods for direct distribution at No Cost Grocery Programs.

At the same time, grocery storesa food banks primary source for safe, reliable suppliescurrently have less to give since they are overwhelmed by residents stocking up. The issue is only expected to worsen as more people go without work and are homebound. But there is something that you can do to help. Here are five ways you can be a part of ensuring that everyone in our community is well fed.
The best way to help the Food Bank of the Rockies right now is by contributing money or time. Your financial donations help it buy food, keep the lights on, and hire staff as needed. As it lost some regular volunteers due to coronavirus risk, the organization is in need of more helpers. The food bank is also practicing social distancing at its facilities and looking at different models of food distribution, like drive-thrus, to protect volunteers, staff, and clients. What Is Community Food Share
Community Food Share in Louisville is a food bank fighting hunger in Boulder and Broomfield counties by providing access to fresh, nutritious food through local partners and its onsite mobile pantry. They have several different programs to help out those in need, from mobile pantries and food boxes for the elderly as well as emergency food services available for any family or individual in need of immediate food assistance.

Coming Together To Provide Food For Our Neighbors
The YMCA’s Beyond Hunger food pantry program began at the Southwest YMCA in January 2021, following the YMCA of Metro Denver’s response during the pandemic and growing food insecurity in the metro area.
Volunteers and staff provide balanced, nutritious food to the community and individuals of all ages can get a bag of groceries on a weekly basis.
We are currently distributing bags of food at the Southwest YMCA, 5181 W. Kenyon Ave., Denver, CO 80236 every Thursday from 4 to 6 PM.
Beyond Hunger bags are filled with a variety of fresh fruits, vegetables, proteins, dairy and grains. Quantity of bags are limited, so you must sign up every week to make sure we have a bag for you.

Rowdys Corner works on a point-based system. Each item is assigned a point value. For example, a can of food that is 15 oz. or less generally has a point value of one . Larger items that may include more than one serving size, such as a bag of dried pasta or cereal, may be more points. Signs posted in Rowdys Corner indicate the point values of different items and the Food Pantry Coordinators are happy to help you determine the value. Generally students may have up to 15 points worth of food per week, with two additional personal care items and five fridge/freezer items. Students also receive two points of personal items. Please note the Rowdys Corner is stocked on a donation basis, so food options will vary.

Harvest Hope Pantry is a Boulder not-for-profit Catholic organization that helps give a sense of hope to Boulder families and individuals experiencing the stress of food insecurity. In addition to adhering to best practices such as abstaining from donating perishable items, leftovers, or homemade items, you should also avoid donating anything thats expired. Food banks will most likely check an expiration date before giving it to a family in need, but its better to be safe than sorry. As a general rule, if you wouldnt eat it, dont donate it.

Instead of being consumed, this food ends up in a landfill, where it decomposes and releases methane a greenhouse gas between 24 and 87 times more potent than CO2. This makes reducing food waste one of the top three ways to reverse climate change.
Virtual Fundraiser Vs Physical Food Drives: Which Is Best To Feed Our Neighbors
While we will always appreciate donations of any type and amount, the truth is that compared to physical food drives, virtual fundraisers help provide immensely more food for our neighbors experiencing hunger.
It all boils down to quantity. While a generous food donation of several grocery bags full of nourishing food would help feed a few people, a donation of, say, $20 would allow us to distribute enough food for 60 entire meals. Thats a lot of food way more than any one of us could buy ourselves at the store.
Were able to distribute so much more food to our community with each dollar donated thanks to our multitude of partnerships, robust purchasing power, large-scale donations, and bulk pricing. Additionally, theres very little manpower required with virtual fundraisers. Rather than requiring the manpower and capacity of staff members and volunteers like physical food donations, virtual fundraisers allow our skilled sourcing team to procure the exact foods our community members want and need to thrive. That means more fresh produce, more culturally respectful items, more specialty holiday foods, and more items that have become out of reach for so many people due to record-high inflation and supply chain issues.
Will we still gratefully accept food donations? Of course . However, theres no comparison when it comes to which type of drive provides more for our community: Virtual fundraisers are the way to help nourish as many neighbors as possible all year long.
