Where Can I Receive Free Thanksgiving Groceries

Emergency Food Bank Stockton/San Joaquin

Back for its third year at the San Joaquin County Fairgrounds the Emergency Food Bank Stockton/San Joaquin is hosting its turkey/food box giveaway that serves more than 2,000 cars every year and more than 4,500 people.

It’s an effective way for us to get a Thanksgiving dinner out to our clients who may need it, Leonard O. Hansen, CEO of the Emergency Food Bank said.

The giveaway is from 8 a.m.-1 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 22. Those who would like groceries must be in a vehicle.

The food bank also continues its Tuesdays DoorDash delivery system set up with 2-1-1 San Joaquin delivering to about 800 people with a food bank food box.

It’s an effective way to reach people who can’t get to the food bank. And it’s grown dramatically each year, Hansen said. We started with 35 families in August of 2020 in the pandemic, and now we’re over 800.

Oasis City Center

The Oasis City Center annual Thanksgiving drive-thru food distribution event will take place on Saturday, Nov. 19 at the Oasis Church starting at 9 a.m. until supplies last.

We want to be a blessing to them, Green said.

The holiday food distribution event will feed 1,000 families with traditional Thanksgiving dishes and about $200 worth of free groceries.

Capital Area Food Bank

TGIF, friends! I dont know about you, but this week kicked my butt. I was able to relax over the long weekend fully, but unfortunately, I just never fully got back into the swing of things this work week!

Now that I have the chance to wind down a bit, I plan on ushering in the weekend by making these Mac and Cheese Bites. Full transparency: we shot this project in partnership with Tillamook for a social media campaign, but I wanted to share this on the blog as well so that you can pin this post for later!

You guysthese mac and cheese bites are heavenly. And a bit addictive. They make for the perfect appetizer, and theyll be sure to wow any guests you might have. Or, theyll at least wow your stomach if youre still social distancing and enjoying these in the comfort of your own home!

Worker And Restaurant Relief

D.C. enforced a dine-in ban from mid-March through most of May, leading to a huge wave of layoffs for restaurant workers. Much of that group was already working without health insurance benefits. Undocumented workers who cook, serve, buss, and wash dishes have been especially vulnerable because they do not qualify for most unemployment benefits. These efforts focus primarily on getting food and supplies to restaurant workers who lost their jobs during the pandemic:

Hook Hall Helps: A relief center based in a huge Park View bar Hook Hall supports industry workers by distributing care packages from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays and from noon to 2 p.m. Saturdays. Family meals are available from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and from noon to 2 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. Friends and Family Meal DC: Hospitality workers affected by the COVID-19 crisis can sign up to receive free groceries from this new nonprofit founded by two restaurant workers. All one-time or monthly donations go directly towards groceries purchased from small businesses.

A Day With Food & Friends

A few weeks ago we partnered with Food & Friends for a volunteering opportunity something we havent done in a while but have missed very much. Volunteering has always been a priority for us and throughout the years weve had some amazing experiences ranging from working with the elderly and shelter animals to raising money to feed the homeless. Making time to do good for others and help those in need is incredibly rewarding, so we were happy to jump right back into it with Food & Friends. This wonderful organizations mission is to foster a community caring for men, women and children living with HIV/AIDS, cancer and other life-challenging illnesses by preparing and delivering specialized meals and groceries in conjunction with nutrition counseling. Nutrition is a challenge for many people but its especially critical for those living with these type of illnesses. Having an organization such as Food & Friends who is funded by donors and people like you and I just shows how amazing we are as a community. Providing these type of service for those who need it most is one of the most important civic duties of our generation and we were proud to be part of it even if it was just for a day.

Where to give, donate food, and volunteer during the novel coronavirus pandemic

The images of D.C. beamed onto television screens across the country often capture scenes of the White House, national monuments, reporters, lobbyists, and other representations of prosperity and power in the nations capital but that paints an incomplete picture. For the last four months, the novel coronavirus pandemic has highlighted inequity in the District by exposing frontline workers in health care and food service to increased risk of catching COVID-19, disproportionately infecting and killing members of Latinx and Black communities, and leading to a spike in unemployment. The widening income gap in the United States is apparent just in the difference between the Districts Northwest and Southeast quadrants, especially east of the Anacostia River in Wards 7 and 8.

Since March 13, D.C. has reported more than 152,000 claims for unemployment. The citys 9 percent unemployment rate in May was triple the size of the monthly figure from 2019. As of late October , Black residents accounted for 75 percent of D.C.s reported deaths from COVID-19, despite making up about 46 percent of the population.

When COVID-19 hit, schools shut down, and kids went home. Those kids who do not have what they need at home suddenly faced that harsh reality of not knowing where or when their next meal would come from. We scaled our operations to support thousands of families and thanks to the incredible donations we received, partnerships we forged, and support from our community, we distributed over 2,000,000 meals to families throughout Washington, D.C.

As schools have reopened, we aim to re-launch what we started – programs helping school-aged children and their families access nutritious food throughout the school day and over the weekends when school meals are not available to them. We are proud to announce our newest platform the DC Food Project Pantry Program. At 14 schools in the district , we have stocked pantries from which students can have access to a broader range of necessities that include food and personal products. Our team has also expanded our Community Bag Program, providing families with food prior to long weekends, major breaks and holidays during the school year.
