Mayflower Marathon new MGM Springfield location
The Mayflower Marathon, one of New Englands largest donation drives, is moving to MGM Springfield for its three-day Thanksgiving week donation event. With the move from the Basketball Hall of Fame to MGM, many donors are wondering where they can drop off donations.
The Mayflower Marathon is an annual 52-hour collaborative food and donation drive jointly run by Springfields Open Pantry Community Services Emergency Food Pantry and Rock 102 radio station. Morning radio hosts on East Longmeadows Rock 102 broadcast the event for 52 hours straight as people across New England drop off food and cash donations for people in need in the Springfield and greater Pioneer Valley areas.
Congressional officials, mayors and governors have all appeared at the food drive. Local schools not just those in Springfield have become some of the largest food donators.
The drive routinely fills up at least three 48-foot tractor-trailers with an average of $165,000 in food and financial donations each year, feeding families across the region through the winter, according to Open Pantry Executive Director Terry Maxey.
Open Pantry and Rock 102 partnered with MGM Springfield to set up the Marathon outside MGMs South End Market in 2022.

What To Donate To A Food Bank And What To Avoid
So, youre ready to donate food to your local food bank. Thats great! Whether youre starting a food drive or just planning to grab a few extra items for donation while out grocery shopping, there are a couple of things you should know about what you can donate and what food banks wont accept.
What food you CAN donate to your local food bank:
This part is pretty easy. Food banks accept dry and canned food donations. What does that mean? Basically, any food that is shelf-stable or nonperishable you can keep it in your pantry and it wont go bad. And remember, only donate food that hasnt reached its sell-by date yet. Specifically, food banks often need items like:
Thats definitely not an exhaustive list but it covers a lot of what food banks regularly need. Additionally, some food banks accept personal care and household items, since many families struggle to afford these items and they arent covered by other food assistance programs like SNAP.
If youre still stumped about what to donate, just look in your own pantry. Families struggling with hunger often cant afford the staples that we normally have stocked at home. So, check your pantry out and go from there. Even specialty foods like olive oil, dressings, or marinades can be helpful if they dont need to be refrigerated.

How To Dispose Of Expired Canned Food
Throw it away. For the most part, you should throw away expired canned food, simply place them in a large garbage bag and toss them into the trash. The main reason why you should place the expired canned food in another garbage bag is because some canned foods tend to be under a lot of pressure once they have expired.
Donate Food & Essentials
The Food Bank for Larimer County accepts donated food, including shelf-stable items such as canned and dry goods as well as dairy, meat, bakery items and fresh produce. We adhere to strict food safety guidelines for the food that we accept. Our staff is trained to pay close attention to date codes, especially with refrigerated products. Most of the dates on the food we distribute are not expiration dates they are best if used by or sell by dates. This means the product is wholesome beyond the date on the product.
In addition to food items, we also gladly accept non-food items like diapers, baby wipes, deodorant, toothpaste, menstrual products and other essentials that help our clients live healthy and rewarding lives.

What Is Canned Food
Canning means preserving food for a longer duration of time by keeping it in an airtight container. It was developed in the 18th century for sailors and soldiers during the war. Canning involves three main steps.
Processing involves slicing, peeling, chipping, pitting, boning, cooking, or shelling. The next step involves sealing the food in airtight containers. After that, the cans are heated to kill any bacteria and to prevent the food from getting spoiled.
How To Recycle Aluminum Cans
When it comes to aluminum can recycling, it really couldnt be much easier. Not only do many municipalities offer curbside pick-up, but because aluminum recycling is one of the most valuable forms of scrap that recycling centers might deal with, its rare that a recycling center wont accept aluminum.
Lets look at each of your options for aluminum can recycling:
Depending on where you live, one, two, or all three of those options may apply for you and your aluminum cans. A few steps will apply no matter which of three options you choose, though, so lets talk about those steps first.
Start by rinsing your aluminum cans out before setting them aside wherever you store your recyclables. For most cans, simply rinsing the cans a few times with hot water will be enough to remove any residue for sticky or otherwise extraordinarily messy cans, however, you may need to let them soak full of hot water. Cleaning your cans in this way to remove any residue helps eliminate odors, which in turn lessens the likelihood of bugs or other pests showing up in your recycling.
Finally, determine the best way to ensure your aluminum can recycling is easily picked up . Make it part of your normal weekly routine and it will be much easier to get into an aluminum can recycling rhythm.

How Long Can You Keep Canned Food After Expiration Date
Canned Goods The expiry date of canned foods usually indicates three years from when its been shelved, but you can consume them past the date for up to four more years. Make sure to keep your canned goods in a cool, dry spot thoughand if there are any dents, rust or leaking, thats when its time to ditch the goods.
What Types Of Canned Food Can Be Donated

You can donate all kinds of canned food. Some of the canned foods accepted by food banks are:
1. Peanut butter
8. Canned Vegetable
9. Canned Stew
This is not an exhaustive list however, it contains the items most preferred by food banks and food donation stations.
Olive oils, marinades, and dressings are also accepted if they do not need refrigeration. Also, food with damaged packaging is not preferred by food donation stations. Items with opened packages are segregated by volunteers and are not distributed. Opened canned food cannot remain edible even for a few days without refrigeration. Even when kept in a refrigerator, canned food can only remain edible for two to three days.
Many food donation stations do not prefer food canned in a personal kitchen as the ingredients cannot be vouched for. Canned food with not-so-perfect packaging is also not distributed. This involves rusted cans, bulging on cans, any dents on cans, and leaking cans.

What Is The Relevance Of The Expiration Date For Donating Canned Food
Since we mentioned that you could consume as well as donate canned food past its expiration date. You might be wondering why the packaging mentions the expiration date anyway. This is due to two main reasons.
1. To indicate the date up to which the product remains in the best condition.
2. To help you choose fresh products.
The expiration date is when the customer can expect deterioration in a product. This is the time when a product starts losing its color, flavor, or other changes in appearance. There could also be changes in nutritional value.
However, this does not mean the product is harmful or hazardous to health. The product can still be used or even donated to a food donation station that accepts expired canned food.
The second reason to put an expiration date on canned food is to help you choose the fresh product. You can compare the expiration date of the two products and choose the fresh one so that you can use it for a longer duration.

Can Aluminum Be Recycled Indefinitely
For the most part, yes! While aluminum does eventually have to be downcycled, the truth is it can be recycled over and over and over again. For instance, most high-grade aluminum can be recycled as high-grade aluminum for a bit before it works its way down to aluminum cans and aluminum cans can be recycled back into aluminum cans .
Eventually, the aluminum needs to be mixed with higher-grade aluminum or bits of fresh aluminum in the recycling process, but the truth is that aluminum really can be recycled indefinitely. And roughly a third of all aluminum out there in use today is recycled aluminum in some industries up to 90% of all aluminum gets recycled.
How Much Is A Pound Of Aluminum Cans Worth
That depends older cans are heavier than newer cans, which can make a difference in bottle bill states. In 1972, for instance, it took roughly 22 empty aluminum cans to weigh one pound in 2002, it took 34 empties to add up to a pound. Newer cans may be lighter yet for arguments sake, though, lets assume that even with the lightest aluminum cans, 40 empties will make a pound of cans.
As a result, if you live in a bottle bill state you could make as much as $4.00 per pound and can generally count on at least a dollar or two per pound. If you dont live in a bottle bill state or near enough to reasonably drive to one, however, you can still sell aluminum cans to scrap yards. Most scrap yards are currently offering between 40 and 50 cents per pound of aluminum, which can still add up over time.
