St Marys Food Bank Opens New Location

SHERBROOKE The St. Marys Food Bank is launching the new year with a new storage and packing facility big enough to meet the monthly needs of the 25 families it serves, and more.
It literally takes a village, said food bank spokesperson Rev. Derek Elsworth of St. Marys Pastoral Charge of the 14×20-foot building constructed by area residents, with about $15,000 in funding from federal and municipal governments.
The facility sits on land donated by the Municipality of the District of St. Marys in downtown Sherbrooke and is technically owned by Sherbrooke Opportunities Society , which will handle food storage, packing and delivery to food bank clients. The organization will also manage the VON frozen meal program.
We are thrilled to be a partner, said Mallori Nickerson, executive director of SHOPS, which provides social and employment opportunities for residents with special needs. SHOPS loves our community and we are always looking for ways to be involved.
The food bank has been looking for a permanent home since March 2020, when Covid restrictions forced it to move from the basement of St. Marys Memorial Hospital and into St. Pauls Roman Catholic Church.
Volunteers could no longer enter the hospital, Elsworth explained, so a temporary space was graciously provided.
This is a win-win for both SHOPS and the food bank, said Nickerson.

St Marys Food Bank On Track To Break Record Numbers

PHOENIX – St. Marys Food Bank announced the organization is quickly approaching record numbers of families in need.
The two main food bank locations, one in Phoenix and the other in Surprise, are seeing 1,239 families per day through the first 12 days of September. Thats 6% higher than Augusts record totals, with around 70 more families each day. Many of these families are first-time clients and clients who have not visited the bank in over a year. Of the nearly 50,000 families that visited both locations in August, almost 10,000 fell into either of those two categories.

The influx has been so great that it has impacted traffic in the area. St. Marys has been forced to send those waiting in lines around the block to prevent traffic on Thomas Road from backing up. The bottom line is we are seeing more clients than we did during the COVID outbreak in the spring of 2020, and we have a lot less food available to us through government programs that kept us going during that time, said the director of public relations for St. Marys Food Bank Jerry Brown.
Brown also said that the food bank is buying more food than ever before, setting the group back financially due to the rising costs of food by inflation. If youd like to donate your time or food to the bank,
