If youre like me youve no doubt had some flops when it comes to choosing a food that your pet likes. So, what do you do when youve spent a fortune on a bag of food and Fluffy or Fido has turned their nose up at it? It cost too much to just throw it away and most places wont accept open bags.

I recently volunteered a few hours at the Hope 7 Food Pantry in Troy. I was surprised by two things. One, they didnt have a whole lot of gluten free options for someone that has Celiac Disease or a gluten intolerance like I do. You can read about that here. Second, they provide pet food for their families in need.

Hope 7 Food Pantry will GLADLY take your opened packages of pet food.

Any open bags they receive are repackaged into smaller bags enough to last a week. They then distribute the food to the families as its needed.

They say more people have cats than dogs.

How Do Food Banks Work

Food banks are designed to help people in the community who may be struggling to pay for food. Schools, churches and community centres often set up collections for food banks or donation schemes and so do big supermarkets and charities, collecting essential items for people who cant afford them.

People usually need a referral from a support service or professional, such as Citizens Advice, your childrens school or a charity. If youre not sure where to get a referral, your local council should be able to advise you and help you find a food bank.

Before being referred people will be asked about their needs, their income and how many people they are supporting so advisers know if they should be referred for enough food to feed a family. They then receive a voucher they can exchange for three days worth of emergency food at a local food bank.

When they have found a food bank and go to collect their food they will often be offered a cup of tea and a chat to see if there is any other help they may need. Food banks exist to meet the immediate need for food but many volunteers try to connect people in need with other support services.

Why Is Bottled Water Needed In Phoenix

In Phoenix, Silva said bottled water is always needed because the temperatures climb very high and noted that elderly people and children get dehydrated easily. Ask your pantry if they can also use cases of water bottles. Cases of water which are just $2-3, can easily be taken to peoples homes and distributed in our dining rooms, Silva says.

Things You Can Donate To Animal Shelters That You Probably Already Have

Harvest Hope in need of food donations

There are lots of reasons you might have extra supplies and items around the house that animal shelters might need. Right now is as good a time as any to do some cleaning and do a good deed at the same time.

It takes a lot to provide for all the animals in a shelters care, and as you can imagine, shelters go through supplies very quickly. They could use all the help they can get.

Take some time to do inventory around your house and see if you have anything youre ready to get rid of that a shelter might use. It wont cost you anything to donate the items that youre getting rid of anyway, youll have a cleaner and more organized living space, and youll be helping dogs as they wait for their forever homes.

You should, however, always call ahead to find out what your local animal shelter needs before you arrive with your items for donation, as shelters vary in what they can and cannot accept.

Here are eight items you probably already have around your house that you can donate to an animal shelter in need.

Foster told TODAY that in her experience as a smaller pantry, meat and fresh vegetables are highly coveted food items.

A lot of the donation boxes have canned meat and cooked meat, like meatballs and chicken patties, to serve unhoused families, or folks without kitchens, she explained. But fresh meat and vegetables make people with kitchens very happy.

For community grassroots food efforts like hers, Foster advised people to give what no one will get anywhere else.

Pantry items, she said. Salt, sugar, condiments, baking items, spices, herbs, tomato sauce, ketchup, mustard, mayo, Sazón, garlic powder, hot sauce. Every couple of months we did giant pantry giveaways where the community gave us cash, and we just bought all kinds of pantry items. People loved it because they are getting boxes with squash and cooked meatballs, but no cooking oil, no salt. How can you make a dinner your kids will eat without salt?

What To Donate To A Food Bank And What To Avoid

So, youre ready to donate food to your local food bank. Thats great! Whether youre starting a food drive or just planning to grab a few extra items for donation while out grocery shopping, there are a couple of things you should know about what you can donate and what food banks wont accept.

What food you CAN donate to your local food bank:

This part is pretty easy. Food banks accept dry and canned food donations. What does that mean? Basically, any food that is shelf-stable or nonperishable you can keep it in your pantry and it wont go bad. And remember, only donate food that hasnt reached its sell-by date yet. Specifically, food banks often need items like:

Thats definitely not an exhaustive list but it covers a lot of what food banks regularly need. Additionally, some food banks accept personal care and household items, since many families struggle to afford these items and they arent covered by other food assistance programs like SNAP.

If youre still stumped about what to donate, just look in your own pantry. Families struggling with hunger often cant afford the staples that we normally have stocked at home. So, check your pantry out and go from there. Even specialty foods like olive oil, dressings, or marinades can be helpful if they dont need to be refrigerated.

Typically food banks are looking for donations of food products from supermarkets, such as:

Lots of food banks will also offer essential non-food items , such as toiletries and hygiene products.
