Why Donate To Food Banks Specifically

âFood banks generally are very efficient in their logistics processes, affording the food industry a one-stop place for donations that they can trust will be handled with best-in-class food safety considerations,â says Michael Guerra, chief development officer for the San Antonio Food Bank in Texas. âFood banks also work to equitably distribute donated food to local nonprofits that have food as a part of their missionâfood pantries, shelters, soup kitchens, etc.â And, he adds, food banks are often the primary organization in a community that aims at minimizing food insecurity among low-income households and under-resourced households in that community.

In addition to providing food, Guerra says most food banks also provide nutritional education and access to public safety programs such as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program .

Why Should You Donate To Local Food Banks

“Millions of vulnerable children are losing the healthy meals they depend on as the closes schools nationwide,” Davis said at the beginning of the pandemic. “As of , 39 states had closed schools entirely. When you add in the districts closed in other states it means 41.6 million kids, or 4 out of 5 kids, are out of school.” Even in areas where the schools were still open, many businesses were closed, which meant hourly workers who may have already been struggling to make ends meet were hit hard.

Fortunately, as of July 2022, the health risks posed by the pandemic have lessened over time. However, Davis notes that the need and the financial impact has not abated. âFamilies still face ongoing challenges due to the strained supply chain, rising food and gas prices, and skyrocketing inflation,â she says. âToday, one in six kids face hunger in the U.S.â

According to a recent Feeding America food bank survey, 80 percent of food banks across the country reported an increase or steady demand for food. Food insecurity exists everywhere, says Zuani Villarreal, the senior director of communication for Feeding America. âIt could be your classmate it could be a co-worker it could be your neighbor a fellow church goer that needs help and I think the awareness of that issue should drive people to help,â she says. For this reason, donating to food banks is more important than ever.

What Is The Relevance Of The Expiration Date For Donating Canned Food

Canned Food Donation Bitchin

Since we mentioned that you could consume as well as donate canned food past its expiration date. You might be wondering why the packaging mentions the expiration date anyway. This is due to two main reasons.

1. To indicate the date up to which the product remains in the best condition.

2. To help you choose fresh products.

The expiration date is when the customer can expect deterioration in a product. This is the time when a product starts losing its color, flavor, or other changes in appearance. There could also be changes in nutritional value.

However, this does not mean the product is harmful or hazardous to health. The product can still be used or even donated to a food donation station that accepts expired canned food.

The second reason to put an expiration date on canned food is to help you choose the fresh product. You can compare the expiration date of the two products and choose the fresh one so that you can use it for a longer duration.

How Much Tuna Can I Give My Cat

Dumpster Diving Huge Food Donations!!! – S2E52

Outside of commercial cat foods, tuna should never be the sole source of a cats diet. Feed your cat tuna like it’s a treat, meaning only give your cat tuna occasionally and only up to 10% of their days calories.

As part of a balanced diet, you can safely offer one teaspoon of tuna a few times a week, or about one-half can per month. Tuna that’s been packed in oil may upset a kittys GI tract, and canned tuna packed in salt water is too high in sodium which can contribute to both fat and water weight and lead to health complications. Light tuna such as skipjack or yellowfin that’s canned in fresh water is a better choice.

In rare cases, intolerance or an allergy may develop. The signs of this can include itchy, red, and scaly skin and hair loss. If unsure about feeding your cat tuna, consult your veterinarian.

Why Should You Not Donate Cans Which Are In Bad Condition

Cans in the case of canned food consist of a hermetic seal and a protective lining. This ensures that the products remain preserved for a longer duration. It prevents external microorganisms from entering the cans. The packaging is done in a way so that the food does not come in contact with the metal of the can.

However, when a can is swollen, rusted, or dented, it is likely that the food is not edible. If the outside can have dents, it is probable that the impact which caused the dent may have destroyed the interior lining as well. The rusting can appear when the contents of the can have come in contact with the can. This could have caused the metal to react with the canned food, and rust may appear on its surface. The reaction can also cause the can to bulge and become swollen.

The growth of bacteria can also be a possible reason for the can to bulge due to the release of certain gases. The release of gases will cause internal pressure, which may cause the can to get swollen, or it will start leaking. The leak can also be caused due to a dent or any other reason.

However, when a can is leaking, it means that it is no longer in an airtight seal. The contents may react with the environment and could result in bacteria growth. Also, external microorganisms may get inside the can. Hence, it is not safe to donate canned food that is dented, rusted, swollen, or leaking.

The condition of the can is consequential even when the canned product is well within its expiration date.

How To Calculate The Value Of Your Tax

Here’s how you can donate to the Summer of a Million Meals

Now comes the tricky part. How much can you deduct from your taxes? There are a couple of rules to keep in mind:

  • If you donate cash to a food bank, make sure you get proper documentation. This could be in the form of a canceled check or receipt. If your donation is at least $250, you will need an official receipt from the charity that confirms the amount you gave.
  • The process isnt as straightforward for food you donate from your kitchen or purchase from the grocery store for the express purpose of giving. The general rule is that the amount you can deduct is the foods fair market value. So, if you donate $100 worth of groceries, you can deduct $100. If you bought the items on sale and only spent $70, you can still deduct the entire $100 based on the fair market value formula of the groceries.
  • If you operate a food-based business like a restaurant, grocery store, etc., you must submit a Donation of Food Inventory Worksheet to the IRS. Theres also an additional statement youll have to obtain from the donee confirming that they wont resell the food you donated.
