Some food banks act exclusively as distribution centres for their member agencies. Daily Bread, for instance, supplies nearly 200 food programs across Toronto. Other food banks, including Seva, are on the frontline, giving directly to people in need.
Why are food banks needed? Access to food is a human right, but as long as poverty exists, food insecurity will, too. As Qureshi explains, if youre living below the poverty line, at some point youll likely be unable to access sufficient, healthy food due to financial constraints. Many Seva clients are people on fixed incomes, like seniors. Many others work, trying to make ends meet on $14 an hour a daunting challenge in the Toronto area, where affordable housing is increasingly scarce.
West Virginia Food Banks Getting $500000 Each
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. Two food banks in West Virginia will each receive $500,000 from the state.
Facing Hunger Foodbank in Huntington and Mountaineer Food Bank in Gassaway are getting a total of $1 million from the office of Gov. Jim Justice, the Charleston Gazette-Mail reported. The food banks distribute about 30 million pounds of food across the state each year.
The money for the food banks was included in this year’s budget. Funds will be used for food and infrastructure, the newspaper reported.
Facing Hunger Foodbank works with 220 agencies. Last year, the food bank bought refrigerators and freezers to help with food storage and distribution.
“As long as I’m here, I’m going to put this in my budget,” Justice said. “We may try in every way to increase it. The bottom line to the whole thing is we don’t need people going hungry in West Virginia.”

In 2019, about 750 million people worldwide were facing hunger, according to the UN World Food Programme, that is one in ten people in the world were exposed to food insecurity. The global Covid-19 pandemic has made the situation worse. According to the UN World Food Programmes live Hunger Map, 880 million people across 92 countries do not have access to enough food.

According to the 2019 Whos Hungry Report by the Daily Bread Food Bank, there were more than 1 million visits to food banks in the Toronto region between April 2018 and March 2019, up four per cent from the year prior. Food Banks: What Are They And Who Are They For
More schools in England are setting up food banks to help feed pupils and their families, according to to a study of school governors.
The National Governance Association’s annual survey found that 8% of governors were in schools which offered a food bank service – up from 7% last year.
According to the study, food banks are most common in schools in the north-east of England, where 13% of governors were in schools offering one.
They are also provided more commonly in nursery and primary schools than in secondary schools.
It is a shameful situation in a country which is among the wealthiest in the world.

In July this year, new figures revealed a big increase in the number of people getting help from food banks.
They also showed that more than one in three of all emergency food parcels distributed throughout the year across the UK by food bank charity Trussell Trust go to children.
This can become more of an issue during the school holidays when some families struggle to afford food when children are not getting free meals in school. Ahead of the summer holidays this year, the charity said it expected to have its busiest summer ever.

However, there is much ambiguity in defining a food bank as opposed to a food pantry or neighborhood food closet. Many smaller food charities who distribute food directly to the public may call themselves a food bank when they are more a food pantry.
The primary different between a large food bank and a smaller food pantry or closet at the local level, then, is that the food bank collects food, warehouses it, and distributes it to other charities which then provide the food to the public. A food bank may provide food to a food pantry. Although definitions and operations vary, most large-scale central food banks do not give out food directly to the public, or only do so on a limited basis.
Food banks can provide food to any organization that helps to feed the public, whether or not food is the main aim of the charity or only a part of it. Shelters and soup kitchens may also get much of their food from a central food bank.
Food banks may be formal arrangements run by larger nonprofit organizations, or by community-based charitable operations such as churches. Food banks are not usually run by governments but are often subsidized by them.
What Can You Do To Help Your Local Food Bank
Food banks and food-related charities need money, food and manpower to operate. You can help by donating money to a national food bank like Feeding America, or give to a regional food bank in your area. Supporting businesses that donate to food banks or conduct regular food drives is another way you can show your support for food related charities.
Around the holidays, news clips of concerned citizens manning the food lines at local soup kitchens or area missions are popular fare, but the fact is that food banks need help all year long. They also need talented people who can run a forklift, keep the accounting books, build a Web site or perform strategic planning tasks. If you have a special skill and are willing to volunteer, your unique contribution will help your local or regional free-food distribution system work more effectively.
If you can’t volunteer your time and expertise, you can still do important work to help a local food bank. If there are no ongoing food drives where you work, worship or play, consider starting one. Some food banks make it easy to institute a food drive program by providing drop-off bins and even project kits with great ideas to get you started.

Flathead Food Banks Report Record Demand
Nonprofit directors from communities across northwest Montana say inflation and high housing costs are driving more individuals and families to local food banks as they face food insecurity
On the Friday before Thanksgiving, Flathead Food Bank Executive Director Jamie Quinn said a queue of cars a half-mile long wrapped around the block outside as families waited to pick up their holiday helpings as part of the nonprofit agencys annual turkey distribution.
The food bank served 715 households on Nov. 18, shattering last years record of about 500.
Quinn attributes the skyrocketing demand to rapid inflation, which has caused food prices to rise by an average of 43%, while high gas prices and unaffordable housing costs have prompted an influx of individuals and families to seek out the food banks resources.
What concerns me is we have more and more working households and middle-class households that we need to serve, Quinn said. Im concerned about the overall health of the community and the country when more people who are working two jobs need the food bank.
Quinn said rising costs are severely impacting those who are on a fixed income and receive social security or disability benefits.
Its hard to see those families that are really hurting because theres just no way to increase that income while everything is going up, Quinn said.
In the Flathead Valley, local figures emphasize the growing desperation among local communities.
How Do Food Banks Distribute Food
Although local charities like faith-based missions and soup kitchens sometimes receive donations directly from private citizens or businesses, they often turn to food banks as their primary source for staple, nutritious foods.
Food banks can vary in their distribution methods, but they usually support a list of member organizations and maintain a warehouse of goods available for pick-up or delivery. Food banks typically receive foods in bulk and repackage them for delivery. They have procedures similar to those of most distribution-related businesses, like an accounting department and warehouse and maintenance personnel.
Member organizations are required to meet specific criteria to become eligible to receive food. They must prove that they provide meals or food free of charge at their facilities, maintain an ongoing feeding program, and meet state and federal tax or nonprofit guidelines. Member organizations may include:
- faith-based groups like missions, church pantries, mosques and synagogues
- meal services to the housebound
- job placement facilities
Member organizations don’t pay for food, but they’re usually responsible for some sort of processing or maintenance fee that constitutes a small portion of the cost of the goods they receive. The maintenance fee amount will vary from region to region and from one food bank to another.

The core role of the food bank is to collect food from donors and make it available to people who need the most. Food banks are distributing food that is every bit as good as that which those who have the ability to do so are buying from the shelves of the local grocery store. If the food being donated is in any way damaged or contaminated, the food bank will decline the donation or dispose off the product rather than distribute it.
So the core function is the acquisition of donated food for distribution to people who need it. The distribution process can be accomplished in several ways. Most food banks distribute through a network of community organizations that run institutional feeding program. These would include homeless shelters, community kitchens, child care centers, old age homes, schools, after school programs, drug and alcohol rehabilitation programs, orphanages, etc.
The resources provided by the food bank to the various community organizations it may serve should not be underestimated. While many organizations may have established very positive relationships with food donors in their communities, they typically are not of a scale to receive large donations from many sources. So the products they are getting, while valuable, are limited relative to their need. The food bank, by definition, has the capacity to acquire and handle very large scale donations and also funds so as to be able to purchase on a large scale.

A soup kitchen or meal center are places where prepared hot food and/or cold food is offered to those in need. Food is usually consumed on premises. Soup kitchens and meal centers are often staffed by volunteer organizations such as church or community groups. Soup kitchens and meal centers sometimes obtain food from a food bank, but may not provide food or non-food items to be taken for use in the home.

Who Runs All These Food Banks
Of the 2,000-plus food banks in the UK, around 1,200 are run by an anti-poverty charity called the Trussell Trust, with the remaining 900 or so run independently.
