Hunger can and does exist amid plenty. Nationally, more than 49 million Americans have trouble regularly putting nutritious food on the table. In addition, despite its wealth, more than 200,000 residents in Palm Beach County struggle with hunger. 52,580 of these residents are children who do not have enough to eat on a daily basis.*
In our communities, individuals or families that do not want to share with their neighbors the fact that they are struggling economically often hide hunger. Sometimes hunger hides behind doors of nice houses with mortgages in default, or the electric is turned off, or all the income going to housing costs, leaving little or no money for food. Sometimes it hides behind the stoic faces of parents or grandparents who skip meals to protect their children or grandchildren from hunger. It goes unseen by those not looking for it. Often students only eat while they are at school because they do not have food at home. There are 91,027 students that have qualified for free and reduced lunch which is 51.6 percent of the students enrolled in PB Public Schools . Due to the growing number of children facing food insecurities, United Way of Palm Beach County has partnered with providers to provide 8,400 children with weekend food backpacks and nearly 21,000 meals served through the Mobile Breakspot food program in the Glades area.

Volunteer Levels Strong But More Help Welcome Food Banks Say
All three food banks, which say theywork together instead of competing, haven’t taken too much of a hit with their volunteer staffs, which had been an issue in the early days of COVID. They’ve all seen long-term volunteers stick around to help through the hard times that COVID, and now the post-pandemic economy, have brought.
“The roster of volunteers that we need to perform all of our operations, for the most part, are continuing to show up,” Hazle said. “We have periods of the year vacation times and that type of thing when it’s a little bit more challenging. But on average, we’re maintaining the volunteer workforce that we need.”
But that doesn’t mean more hands on deck wouldn’t be a welcome help to feed the 184,000 people that struggle with food insecurity in Palm Beach County, according to Mageria.
“For all of us who are in the field that we are in, we collaborate and we want to work together,” Mageria said. “But also, I want to encourage people to help them feel that what they’re giving is not too little. If each of us give a little, when it’s added up, we end up with a lot. If all of us give our time, our food, our resources, whatever it is, we’ll make a difference.”

Palm Beach County Food Bank Raises Supply Concerns Amid Inflation
WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. Families in Palm Beach County are struggling to put food on the table because of inflation. Local nonprofits are ramping up their efforts to help, but it’s also now becoming increasingly difficult for them to supply the food.
Farm Share CEO Stephen Shelley said their food supply is lower than it was pre-pandemic, yet the need is significantly higher.
“It’s very difficult for food banks to provide the food that is in such high demand,” Shelley said. “And additional supply chain issues have really effected private donations from other donors, plus the cost, the inflationary cost to get that food to us or for us to get that food from them has also affected our bottom line.”
Right now, Shelley said, they are supplying up to 8 million pounds of food a month to South Florida families.
Although much of their produce is donated, Farm Share is responsible for transporting their food to South Florida and, with the rising cost of gas, Shelley said, it’s becoming significantly more expensive.
He said they have two options right now find more funding or cut services.
“A lot of these are hardworking families who are being effected by the high gas prices, rent prices, food prices and other household staples, they’re finding that their paychecks just don’t go far enough each and every month,” Shelley said.
Farm Share’s next food distribution will take place Friday at the Palm Beach Outlets. The event starts at 8 a.m. until supplies last.
St Vincent De Paul Food Pantry

West Palm Beach Food Pantry To Host Annual Turkey Giveaway
A South Florida food pantry is once again stepping up to put a turkey on the table for those in need.
Liberty Movement Food Pantry in West Palm Beach is hosting its annual turkey giveaway Monday.
The turkey distribution will be held from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. at 1301 53rd St.
The drive-thru style event is open to all families who are struggling with rising food costs.
In addition to turkeys, families will also receive food boxes with a week’s worth of groceries thanks to Feeding South Florida and the Palm Beach County Food Bank.
Organizers said their goal is to help as many as 500 families this Thanksgiving.
“We dont ask for any I-D, you come, you sign up, and we serve you, if you have a need, you join the line and come sign up no questions asked,” Clive Atkinson, director of operations, said.
Food will be given on a first-come, first-served basis.

How Do Drive
There are lot of volunteers help at Drive-thru food pantries. While not all drive-thru pantries operate in the same way, here�s how most work:
Staff and volunteers direct visitors to the parking area.
Visitors pull up to the pantry in their car and are usually guided into a clearly marked queue. As people move through the pantry, staff will continue to move the cars forward to get everyone through as quickly and safely as possible.
Checkin.
You are required to fill some information for Pantry’s recording keeping.
Food is loaded into the cars.
Pre-packed bags of food, usually full of shelf-stable items like pasta, canned fruit and peanut butter, as well as fresh produce and meats are loaded by volunteers into the trunk of the car.
