Weld Food Bank Partners With Beef Sticks For Backpacks To Feed Colorado Kids

Weld Food Bank and Beef Sticks for Backpacks announced Thursday a partnership to help fight childhood hunger.
Weld Food Bank will serve as a distribution partner for Beef Sticks for Backpacks, which is also providing beef sticks for McBackpack in Fort Collins and Kidspak in Loveland, in addition to the Weld Food Bank Backpack Program in Greeley.
These backpack programs provide food for kids who might not have a meal otherwise during the weekends.
Beef Sticks for Backpacks has distributed nearly 53,000 beef sticks to Colorado kids this year, according to a news release.
Having Weld Food Bank as a key partner allows us to support more backpack programs and ultimately feed more kids, Beef Sticks for Backpacks director Dan Byers said in the news release. During this critical time, we are committed to supporting Colorado children who are struggling and lack access to food, including protein that may not often be available to them.
Weld Food Bank CEO Bob OConnor said 2020 has been a particular prevalent year for children in need of a meal.
More than 2,000 beef sticks are being given to Weld County children each week, OConnor added.
Beef Sticks for Backpacks is a nonprofit organization with the goal of distributing high-quality beef sticks to backpack programs that benefit children throughout Colorado. The organization was formed by members of the Colorado agriculture community, according to the news release.
Colorado Food Bank Facing ‘the Perfect Storm’ With Supply & Demand Amid Soaring Inflation
GREELEY, Colo. – As inflation continues to hit the pockets of hardworking Coloradans it’s also causing major headaches for food pantries across the state. The Weld Food Bank in northern Colorado said they’ve seen a 25% increase in demand for their services in recent months as the price for gasoline and groceries climbs to record highs.
As a result of the growing cost of goods, donations to the pantry have plummeted as more and more people are seeking help. The surge in demand and news comes right as the pantry sees its regular summer surge, largely associated with students being home from classes.
“I have been through a recession and several disasters. The need was great, but the supply chain was fine. This is like the perfect storm,” said Bob O’Connor, CEO of the Weld Food Bank. “I am very much concerned. I have a feeling this is going to go on for quite some time.”
Chief Development Officer Stephanie Gaush told CBS4 there has been a domino effect when it comes to the challenges the food bank has experienced.
“It is absolutely a double-edged sword. We are seeing our costs go up. At the same time, we are seeing the amount of people in need go up,” Gausch said. “The food bank as a whole is seeing the cost of product go up, and the cost of transportation on all of those things have increased for us as well.”
However, those services have largely came to a halt in recent months.
“We have seen that all but cease,” Gausch said.

Weld County Food Pantries
When facing an emergency, food pantries across Weld county Colorado can assist. The locations, many of which are non-profits or charities, provide groceries, vegetables, fruits, and boxes of food to low income families and anyone that needs help.
Some locations are mobile sites and will visit different parts of the county. Other food pantries are open limited hours and clients should call in advance for hours. An application process is normally in place and resources are limited.
In addition to offering groceries, the Weld County food banks may have other items. This can include clothing, fruits, vegetables, Christmas meals and holiday goods. Call a location for more details.

Once again First Christian Church will partner in this critical ministry. Non-perishable food and monetary donations are greatly needed. Items especially requested are canned meat, fruit, and vegetables as well as peanut butter, cereal, beans, and rice.
