Where Does The Food Go

The Regional Food Bank supplies food to such nonprofit organizations as food pantries, senior centers, shelters, after-school programs, soup kitchens, low-income day care centers, and others. These programs turn our food into nutritious, balanced meals for thousands of men, women, and children who otherwise would not get enough to eat. The Food Bank serves about 1,000 member agencies at any given time.

How Are The Tax Incentives Calculated

General tax deduction: Businesses that donate inventory may claim a tax deduction in the amount of the propertys basis, which is usually its cost to the business and is often lower than the fair market value, which is the value at which goods can be sold. Businesses other than C-corporations including S-corporations, sole proprietorships, and some LLCs cannot deduct more than 30% of the business total taxable income each year. C-corporations generally cannot deduct more than 10% of their taxable income for the year.

Enhanced tax deduction: The enhanced tax deduction provides an extra incentive for donation by allowing the donating business to deduct the lesser of twice the basis value of the donated food or the basis value of the donated food plus one-half of the foods expected profit margin . Under the enhanced deduction, all businesses may deduct up to 15% of their taxable income for food donations.

Example: A grocery store donates potatoes with a fair market value of $100. The basis value of these potatoes was $30. The expected profit margin is the fair market value minus the basis value , which is $70. Under the enhanced deduction, the grocery store is eligible to deduct the smaller of:

1. Basis Value x 2 = $30 x 2 =$60or

2. Basis Value + = $30 + = $65

The enhanced deduction would be $60, which is substantially higher than the general deduction .

For every one meal the Feeding America network provides, SNAP provides nine. Because of SNAP and other government hunger-relief programs, many neighbors have consistent access to nourishing food. Other programs include:

How Feeding America Turns $1 Into At Least 10 Meals

Feeding America works with manufacturers and retailers to donate food that would otherwise go to waste. Our partners donate truckloads of food they are unable to sell. That rescued food then travels to food bank members throughout the country. Your donations help Feeding America provide that food to people who need it. In 2020, our partners donated more than 2 billion pounds of food to Feeding America.

Our generous supporters help to cover the cost of sorting, storing, and transporting that food on its way to reach our neighbors in need. This means good food reaches our food banks quickly and we use our resources wisely.

How we calculate the cost of a meal

We calculate the cost of a meal by looking at how much food is donated to Feeding America and Feeding Americaâs operational costs. Our operational costs include, but are not limited to, collecting, storing, and transporting food to our member food banks.

We divide the total number of pounds of donated food by what it costs to keep Feeding America running smoothly and getting that food where it needs to go. That gives us the number of pounds of food we secured on behalf of local food banks per dollar. Each meal is roughly 1.2 pounds of food so that gives us our meal per dollar figure.

We review the cost per meal on an annual basis to ensure it continues to reflect Feeding Americas national food sourcing efforts and cost structure.

Where Does Our Food Go

Last year, Utah Food Bank distributed 67.3 million pounds of food, the equivalent of 56.1 million meals, to Utahns facing hunger across the state.

Emergency Food Assistance: Emergency Food Assistance is the central means by which we distribute food to children, seniors, and families in need throughout the state. Does The Regional Food Bank Purchase Food

The Food Bank operates a cooperative buying program for its member agencies, where we purchase needed items in large quantities and then resell the food to the member agencies. Our Coop Program helps supplement our donated food inventory, enabling the Food Bank to meet most of the food needs of its member agencies. Monetary donations to the Regional Food Bank are not used to purchase food, but to underwrite the costs of transporting, storing, and distributing donated food, which is why every dollar donated lets the Regional Food Bank distribute $10 worth of food!

The 2015 changes to the enhanced tax deduction took a significant step to incentivize donations, but there are additional ways to further improve the federal tax incentives available for food donations. The suggestions put forth by Natural Resources Defense Council and the Harvard Law School Food Law and Policy Clinic would require Congressional action.

  • Congress should foster the development of innovative, sustainable food recovery models by repealing the no-charge provision that does not allow the enhanced deduction to be claimed if donated food is transferred by the donee in exchange for money, other property, or services.
