Washington And Iron County Food Pantries

The free food pantries in the Washington and Iron County region of Utah help low income families and residents that are in an emergency situation. The charities as well as non-profits cover those two counties as well as nearby Kane. Not only may groceries or meals be given, but the centers also can give out basic needs as noted below.

Fighting Hunger From St George

Utah Food Bank strives, through its work and its resources, to reduce the toll that hunger and poverty takes on so many children and adults throughout our state. Last year, Utah Food Banks Southern Distribution Center distributed close to 4.7 million pounds of food to Utahs six southernmost counties: Beaver, Iron, Washington, Garfield, Kane and San Juan. Opened in 2011, the Utah Food Bank Southern Distribution Center also serves the Kanosh Paiute Mobile Pantry in Millard County and some small, underserved communities just beyond Utahs southern border in Arizona.

Historically, local pantries received fewer deliveries from Utah Food Banks Salt Lake warehouse, which required as much as a 12-hour round-trip journey, often on rough roads. Being able to offer a more localized outlet for food distribution has improved service quality, increased efficiency and improved coverage. Through the Utah Food Bank Southern Distribution Center, 43 local pantries and other partner organizations in Southern Utah are now receiving products more directly and frequently from Utah Food Bank. Utah Food Bank Southern Distribution Center works closely with 25 local grocery stores and collected nearly 1.8 million pounds of fresh food last year through our Grocery Rescue program.

When the COVID-19 outbreak struck in 2020, the need for food assistance climbed as Utahns hunkered down and jobs perished.

Now that the pandemic has been normalized due to the presence of vaccines and the easing of restrictions and many jobs have returned, the demand for help with food has remained high.

Why? After all, food banks expected emergency conditions to let up once the state and its residents found more stability in life amid the virus.

Then 8.6% annual inflation entered the equation, and those hopes for diminished demand for help vanished.

Kate, who asked to be identified only by her middle name while discussing her need for aid, has been staggered by the sticker shock. Soaring prices have even limited the food banks she can drive to in Kearns, where she lives.

As a part-time teacher in an after-school program, money is tight.

You have to pinch pennies somewhere else, she said, in order to be able to afford what you need.

Kate volunteers in a food pantry in Kearns, where she gets most of her groceries. She then tries to complement those supplies at discount produce stores. It becomes, she said, sort of a scavenger hunt.

If you just have a part-time job, she said, theres not a lot of money to go around to pay your other bills.

The Switchpoint Modelseeing The Person Behind The Circumstance

A number of years ago Rod and I decided that rather than give Christmas gifts, we would donate food and money to Dixie Care and Share, the homeless shelter in St George. When Carol, the executive director, took over and opened Switchpoint we were amazed and inspired by her vision and commitment to create more than a shelter, but rather a complete resource center to move people out of poverty to more self-reliance. We knew we wanted to be more involved and began volunteering at the food pantry, which has become the third largest pantry in the state of Utah.

We were fortunate to meet the people we were serving and realized that we had a lot to learn and perhaps had misjudged the reasons for their circumstances. It was amazing to see how Carol and the Switchpoint staff treated each individual with absolute respect how they could see the person behind the need without the judgement of what brought them there. In turn, we watched people rise up and return to hope, abilities and confidence. We also witnessed that people are very generous during the holidays, but forget the many needs year-round for these families, both for donations and service hours. Hurricane Valley Food Pantry

WHAT IS THE HURRICANE VALLEY FOOD PANTRY?

The Hurricane Valley Food Pantry supports families facing food insecurity. This pantry is a joint effort of Five County Community Action, the City of Hurricane, the Utah Food Bank, and the Hurricane Valley Community.

The purpose of emergency food boxes is to prevent food insecurity for low moderate income households*. Case management and information about other community resources is also available. No household will be turned away for emergency food.

* A household includes any individual or group of individuals who are living together as one economic unit.

Donations of diapers, hygiene kits, and/or non-perishable food can be brought to the pantry during business hours. Donations may also be given directly to the Utah Food Bank who provides approximately 90% of food dispersed at the Hurricane Food Pantry.

Pretty typical warehouse job, much of the job is done out of consideration that its a non-profit. Salaries and pay will be less, however you do get benefits.

Volunteer dept manager is completely useless. They praise you one minute for a job well done and then the next theyre irritated you didnt do something their way. Upper management literally is so hands-off from the day-to-day tasks and only care about their donors. Expired, rotten food is given out to those in need on a daily basis. At one point, hamburger packages had fallen out of the fridges and were left to expand and rupture leaving blood all over the floor for days before they decided to clean it up.
