ITHACA, N.Y. The Food Bank of the Southern Tier relaunching its mobile food pantry.
The program was put on pause because of the pandemic. During that time the food bank shifted to larger community food distributions. Community Coordinator Randi Quackenbush
We know that about 40% of the people that attended the large community food distributions were completely new to our services. And so that may have been the only exposure that theyve had to an emergency food program. And people enjoy the drive through. People like to be able to stay in the car. People like to be able to feel safe, said Randi Quackenbush, Food Bank of the Southern Tier.
Pre-registrations required and often limited to residents of the county.

What Is The Difference Between A Food Bank And A Food Pantry
Independent community food pantries are self-governing and usually distribute food to their clients on a once-a-month basis. A food bank is the storehouse for millions of pounds of food and other products that go out to the community. A food pantry functions as the arms that reach out to that community directly.

TAYLORSVILLE Nearly 1,300 people lined up to grab a bag of canned goods for their family at a Utah Food Bank mobile food pantry Monday.
Just six weeks ago, the Utah Food Bank started this weekly pick-up location.
The first time we did it it was like 60 families, Organizer Jake Buhler said. Then it went to 80 families, it went to 100 families, 120, and then today it went to over a thousand.
Buhler said the amount of the food items handed out depended on the size of each family. He said after Mondays turnout, the Utah Food Bank would reevaluate to make sure they have even more supplies for next week.
We are going to go back to the drawing board to see what we need to do, he said.
Mele Massey said this was her first time picking up donations.
I saw a whole bunch of people, and it is so amazing, she said. Im going to feed my sister, my grandkids with these items.
Elin Estrada and his family waited an hour to get to the front of the line. He said he came because he could not get what he needed in stores.

Food Bank Of The Southern Tier Sees Increase In Food Requests From Inflation
ELMIRA, N.Y. Prices are up just about everywhere: in the grocery store, at the gas station, and in the clothing department. But the Food Bank of the Southern Tier wants those in need to know that its continuing work to make sure its pantry shelves are still stocked.
The Food Bank isnt immune to the impact of skyrocketing inflation. Compared to 2019 , the Food Bank has seen a 10% increase in requests for food, according to Major Giving Officer Mary Jane Bray.
But the organization isnt slowing down its efforts to ensure those that need food can still get it.
We are doing a lot of work with strengthening our relationships with all of our pantries across the Southern Tier, said Bray. She added that the Food Bank is also providing educational guidance to pantries so they know how best to serve the community. Plus, the Food Bank is able to take advantage of fresh produce coming from local farms during the summer months.
The governments consumer price index jumped 9.1% for the 12 months ending in June 2022. This translates to costs rising by double-digit percentages. Eggs are up 33% and breakfast sausage is up 14%, for example. And the prices might stick around for a while.
Bray said anyone in need can call 211 to find out when and how to access food near where you live.

Mobile Pantries Bringing Food And Hope
Posted on Edited May 7, 2020 by
Mobile Pantries have been a vital part of Fighting Hunger Statewide for a long time, with mobile pantries set up across the state that distribute food on a regular basis. They have historically provided support to Utahns living in areas that are classified as food deserts or are inaccessible or underserved by traditional food pantries. COVID-19 has proven just how essential they are as an effective and efficient tool in responding to the sharp increase in need due to school closings and job loss. We have already expanded distribution through this program, and will continue to do so in the coming weeks and months.
One example of this expansion is the emergency food distribution we hosted on Friday, April 24th. This was the largest emergency food distribution we have done so far, serving more than 5,000 families, impacting a total of approximately 29,000 individuals!
This event was planned in a relatively short time and wouldnt have been successful without the collaboration of many, including 192 amazing volunteers and staff, and an impressive list of groups including Maverik Center, Herc Rentals, Utah Barricade Company, Deseret Transportation, Hoj Innovations, Performance Trucking, C.R. England, Meadow Gold and Dairy West.
More than 126,000 Utahns have filed for unemployment in recent weeks. With many Utahns living paycheck to paycheck, the loss of work has hit hard.
Food Bank Of The Southern Tier Reopens Mobile Food Pantries

BEAVER DAMS, NY The Food Bank of the Southern Tier has begun re-opening its mobile food pantries across the region.
Last Friday, the food bank held a mobile distribution at the Grace Lee Wesleyan Church in Beaver Dams, New York.
The food banks mobile units are a smaller-scale version of the larger Community Food Distributions that have been held throughout the pandemic.
While the CFDs could hand out food to about 500 households, they were limited to only ten different locations throughout the region.
Food Bank of the Southern Tier President and CEO Natasha Thompson says theyve been looking to scale their operation back down to smaller, more local distributions, and will be able to host them more frequently.
Were hoping that with the smaller scale mobiles, we can do at least one a day, and get to the point where were doing two a day like we did pre-COVID. Again, while each distribution is smaller, we can do more of them across the region, and hopefully, serve more people in more communities, he said.
Thompson is confident that this will be an effective way to distribute food across the region going forward.

School Food Center Program
What is the School Food Center Program?
School Food Centers are spaces where food and other grocery items can be distributed at no cost within a school, offering a variety of choice and items for students and families to pick and choose what suits their needs. School Food Center partners are onboarded like a pantry with the Food Bank, receive an orientation, and then order their own food. Schools need to provide dedicated space and staff for this initiative, and the Food Bank is able to provide onboarding and ongoing support in the form of grants, trainings, access to cold storage equipment, and more. This model offers students a chance to be involved and learn valuable skills such as ordering, inventory, order picking, and distribution.
