Why Donate To Food Banks Specifically
âFood banks generally are very efficient in their logistics processes, affording the food industry a one-stop place for donations that they can trust will be handled with best-in-class food safety considerations,â says Michael Guerra, chief development officer for the San Antonio Food Bank in Texas. âFood banks also work to equitably distribute donated food to local nonprofits that have food as a part of their missionâfood pantries, shelters, soup kitchens, etc.â And, he adds, food banks are often the primary organization in a community that aims at minimizing food insecurity among low-income households and under-resourced households in that community.
In addition to providing food, Guerra says most food banks also provide nutritional education and access to public safety programs such as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program .
How To Drop Off Your Food Donations

Please let the food bank know you are dropping off a contribution by checking in at the front desk when you arrive. Dont just drop off your food contributions to the food bank hang around and get a feel for what theyre all about. There is a possibility that you may acquire knowledge about local food insecurity and hunger. Ask if there is any way you may contribute as a virtual volunteer if you are unable to help out at the food bank physically.

On Saturday, March 20, 2021, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Associated Food Stores, the National Guard, KSL, the Boys and Girls Club of multiple state counties and many other local and interfaith entities partnered to collect and deliver bags and boxes of food to help the Utah Food Bank support thousands of families in the states first Feed Utah food drive.

% Of Southern Utah Faces Food Insecurity Heres How You Can Help
ST. GEORGE The Utah Food Bank Southern Distribution Center estimates that 39,000 people in Southern Utah and one in five Southern Utah kids face food insecurity, meaning living without reliable access to affordable, nutritious food.
The Utah Food Bank is currently hosting their annual Holiday Food & Fund Drive from October 15 to January 15, raising money and non-perishable foods to stock the shelves of the food bank and food pantries across the state.
But what happens when you donate to the food bank? How is your donation used? The Utah Food Bank Southern Distribution Center, located on River Road in St. George, gave Redrock Now a tour.
First, the Utah Food Bank functions as a middleman. They collect food and then pass it on to pantries and community organizations that help get the food to people in need. For example, Solomons Porch or Switchpoint in St. George.
Second, donations of canned goods are only a small part of all the food the food bank handles. The Utah Food Bank gets food from the government, donations via connections to larger organizations like Feeding America, donations from local businesses and entities, and has a grocery rescue program where they get food from local grocery stores that is near-expiration but not expired.
The food bank is able to get most of this food for a very low cost, or only the cost of transporting it away.
Third, this is why the food bank says they need three kinds of donations: Food, Time, and Money.

Community And Faith Groups
Clubs and groups are welcome to get involved, but because of workplace safety and liabilities and the small size of our warehouse, we cannot accommodate large groups or young children during regular morning hours of operation. How Do I Donate To A Local Food Bank
The donation process will vary from food bank to food bank. To find your local food bank, Villarreal advises visiting FeedingAmerica.org and entering your zip code into the food bank locator. From there, she recommends connecting with that local food bank. Typically, theyâll have a most-needed list of items of things you can donate.
Financial donations are also welcome at most food banks as are volunteers. âVolunteerism is a huge need at all food banks,â Guerra says. âAnd the donation of the dollar goes a long way also. In fact, with the increase of fuel, most food banks need the dollar more than ever to keep food flowing into and across their local service region.â
Other local meal programs such as Meals on Wheels also rely on volunteers to deliver and prepare meals. âFor many recipients, the trusted Meals on Wheels volunteer who shows up every day with a meal and a smile is the only person they see or speak with all day,â says Jenny Young, the vice president of communications for Meals on Wheels America.
And if youâre not in a position to donate food, money, or time, Davis says helping spread the word about available resources for families in need is one of the easiest ways to support. âNo Kid Hungry has a texting line to help,â she says. âFamilies can text âFOODâ or âCOMIDAâ to 304-304 to find community meal sites for their kids.â

A growing numbers of Utahns are going without food one of the many impacts of the coronavirus pandemic.
There are several nonprofits in the state that are trying to address the need. Here are the places that welcome your help:
Local school districts
School districts have taken the lead in distributing food to families in need. Most have separate foundations that support philanthropic efforts. The Granite Education Foundation, for instance, helps run the pantries in Granite School District. In Salt Lake City School District, the Salt Lake Education Foundation provides bags of food for families to get through weekends. Many also accept contributions at their school pantries, donations of money online or welcome volunteers to help in person.
As one of the biggest distributors of food in the state to those in need, the Utah Food Bank asks those who can to give money, time or groceries. Theres a list of times and locations for volunteering on its website, as well as a spot to donate money and a list of where to drop off food.
For the Kids has helped feed students and their families from Rose Park since 2012 as a way to nourish them, but also to give them hope. It has a list of food items needed, including cereal and crackers, on its website.

What Food Items Can Be Donated
As a rule of thumb, Villarreal says food banks are looking for food pantry staples that most people have in their kitchens such as grains, pastas, canned beans, cereal, and peanut butter. Guerra adds that low-sodium canned vegetables, rice, and canned fruit are also needed.
There are some items that food banks generally donât take as donations such as homemade items, Guerra says. Villarreal advises not donating items in glass containers as they can shatter during transportation or anything thatâs opened, damaged, or unlabeled.
Keep the expiration dates in mind as well. âMany nonperishable items have a shelf life well beyond their sell-by date,â Guerra says. So, Villarreal recommends using your best judgment. If the item is near its expiration date it should be fine to donate, but if itâs well past the date itâs best to toss it.
Depending on the food bank, some also accept other items as donations. Think of things that youâd find at your local grocery store such as feminine hygiene products, toothpaste, soap, toilet paper, cleaning supplies, diapers, pet food, and other household items.
