Tarrant Area Food Bank West In Parker County Celebrates Their Grand Opening
Local leaders and members of the Weatherford and East Parker County Chambers of Commerce attended the grand opening of the new Tarrant Area Food Bank West, which will help serve more communities outside of Tarrant County.
The Tarrant Area Food Bank opened its new facility, TAFB West in Parker County, with a grand opening celebration on April 14. The ribbon-cutting and community event welcomed community leaders and key dignitaries who represent the community at large and show support for the non-profit celebrating its 40th anniversary in 2022.
Tarrant Area Food Bank West is the first branch location, a $6 million facility in Weatherford that allows the food bank to help more people with expanded programs and improved logistical capabilities in the rapidly growing area of Parker and six surrounding counties. The new facility will pilot new programs that can be rolled out across both locations, which will enhance the services the nonprofit can offer across its service area.
Over the last number of years, during the pandemic, Tarrant Area Food Bank identified gaps in services for individuals in need of human and social services in the more rural counties of our 13-county service area, said Julie Butner, president and CEO of the Tarrant Area Food Bank.
Our donors and corporate partners stepped up and with their support we acquired the facility, built it out, and brought some innovation to food bank programs we look to launch in the coming years.

Founded in 1982 and serving 13 North Texas counties, Tarrant Area Food Bank is set to open a new location in Parker County TAFB West.
This is something that the food bank has wanted to do for a long time and weve just never had the ability to do it, TAFB President and CEO Julie Butner said. With the community growing and growing so much into Parker County, the need was there even before the pandemic and now with the pandemic, its just really forced our hand to do it now because were at max capacity at the other facility.
TAFB was founded by a group of Fort Worth residents who were concerned about hunger in the community. Three months after its opening, the organization had distributed donated food to 50 charities in Fort Worth.
Those 13 counties include Parker, Palo Pinto, Tarrant, Hood, Johnson, Erath, Somervell, Denton, Wise, Cooke, Hamilton, Bosque and Hill.
Tarrant Area Food Bank West will be in the former Standard Hardware, Inc. building at 112 Winners Circle in Weatherford, just next to the entrance for Canyon West Golf Course.

President and CEO of the Tarrant Area Food Bank Julie Butner cuts ribbon to open new facility.
The Tarrant County Food Bank stretched itself from Fort Worth to Weatherford with its new food bank facility that celebrated its opening with a ribbon-cutting April 14.
Through partnerships, the hybrid food bank will provide resources including a mission market pantry provided by H-E-B, an on-site cooking class led by volunteers, and a garden that will teach the community how to grow plants and what to do with the food once its accessible.
The reason why we did the hybrid model differently here is that we wanted a distribution center but also a pantry and agency where neighbors in need can come and receive service, president and CEO of the Tarrant Area Food Bank, Julie Butner, says. We did this because it is in a rural and remote area and its hard for people to have reliable transportation or rely solely on public transportation.
The new 80,000 square-foot food bank is located in Parker County. The reason for them choosing Weatherford as their new food bank location is because of its rural and remote location.

New Tarrant Area Food Bank Location Opens In Weatherford
WEATHERFORD, Texas – The new Tarrant Area Food Bank will host their grand opening in Weatherford on Thursday. They hope that the new location will help meet the growing need for people across North Texas.
“There’s so many more people who are hungry that need our help, but we have been at capacity for over three years at our current location,” Tarrant Area Food Bank President & CEO Julie Butner said.
Tarrant Area food bank volunteers and employees have been used to seeing thousands of people waiting in long lines over the past two years.
At the height of the pandemic, there was an 80% increase in need. Now, the food bank said, they are still serving 40% more than what they did before the pandemic.
This new location will help serve at least seven more target counties across North Texas. They also plan to be open on weekends and during evenings to give more people an opportunity to come and get what they need.
“Opening up a location in Weatherford to service our Western counties is going to alleviate some of the capacity issues that were experiencing,” Butner said.
Butner explained some of the many reasons why so many people still need some assistance right now.
“We have an increase in population in general in Fort Worth and Tarrant County,” Butner said. “The inflation report that closed out last month, that 8.5% inflation rate, and people are feeling that pinch at the pump at the grocery store.”

The Tarrant Area Food Bank opened a new location in Weatherford on Thursday.
TAFB employees and volunteer have grown accustomed to serving a dramatically higher increase in clients since the COVID-19 pandemic hit in March of 2020.
We saw an 80% increase in demand during the pandemic and have settled at at 40% higher than pre-pandemic levels, said TAFB CEO Julie Butner.
The new location allows the non-profit to serve at least seven more target counties across North Texas.
In addition to the food bank, the facility will operation as a Mission Market as well.
We will also serve as a pantry so that if there are members of the community that need to access directly they can do that from us as well, said Butner.
Clients have access to the facility at nights and on weekends to give a wider swath of people the opportunity to get what they need.
Its humbling and very gratifying to know that the work that youre doing is impacting someones life immediately said Butner.

About Tarrant Area Food Bank
Tarrant Area Food Bank was founded in 1982 by a group of Fort Worth residents concerned about hunger in their community. It is now the primary source of donated food for hunger-relief charities and feeding programs in Tarrant and 12 surrounding counties, serving 1,000,000 meals each week.

“This is a shopping experience for neighbors who are hungry, they get to come in and see what they want and what their food preferences,” said Butner
The food on the shelves are color-coded with a guide to make healthier choices. It’s part of the Supporting Wellness at Pantries program. Items marked green, stand for choose often, like a fruit or veggie. Yellow is choose sometimes and red means to choose rarely. Usually, items that are high in sugar, sodium or fat, such as desserts fit the red category.
“I’m just getting canned goods mostly, can get here and don’t have to buy at the store,” said Leeann Jackson of Weatherford who came to shop Thursday afternoon.
Jackson said she was picking up food from the Tarrant Area Food Bank West because of the soaring food prices at the grocery store.
“Me and my husband are both retired, so this helps us out to have a little money left over to pay the bills,” said Jackson.
The 8.5% inflation rate is impacting food, housing and other necessities for people across the country. Butner said the food bank is feeling it too and it has increased their operating costs.
Its also impacting the grocery stores and distributors that donate to us because they have supply chain issues, so they cannot donate as much product to us, that coupled with the fact that our neighbors in need are dealing with increased prices on the very, very basic necessities like food, gasoline, rent and utilities,” said Butner.
