Stop & Shops Campaign Raises $12m For Hunger Relief

Quincy, Massachusetts-based Stop & Shop, together with Unilevers Knorr brand, announced that its Food for Friends campaign raised more than $1.2 million for its 12 regional food bank partners to combat summer hunger in the communities it serves.

According to Feeding America, 22 million kids across the U.S. rely on school meals. When schools close for the summer, school meal programs often close too.

Stop & Shops annual Food for Friends donation campaign is allowing customers at the grocers more than 400 stores throughout Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New York and New Jersey to donate at checkout to support food insecure families across the Northeast, with 100 percent of donations going directly to Stop & Shops 12 regional food bank partners.

This month-long campaign serves to renew hope for so many families that are currently struggling, allowing kids to enjoy a fun and healthy summer of play and time outdoors rather than worrying about where their next meal will come from, said Gordon Reid, president.

This program also shows the value of communities coming together to support one another, and Stop & Shops steadfast commitment to helping our food bank partners provide nutritious food to families in need.

The Academy of Hospitality and Tourism at Erasmus High School and Stop & Shop today held a ribbon cutting of the schools new food pantry. The pantry, which will serve over 300 students from 9th-12th grade, is being supported by a $7,500 gift card donation from Stop & Shop that will enable the school to purchase the specific food items and other essential products that the students and their families need.

The Stop & Shop School Food Pantry Program was established to help limit barriers impacting students ability to succeed in the classroom by making sure that they have consistent access to food. Stop & Shop supports local schools existing food pantries or helps them establish a new one by providing gift card donations to help stock their shelves.

One of our core beliefs that is entrenched in our culture is Maslow before Bloom. Academy of Hospitality and Tourism has always subscribe to the notion that our school must meet the physiological needs of our students before we can demand academic excellence, opines Principal Dr. Shirley Miller. Stop & Shop, our community partner since 2017, has given us opportunities to serve others through the preparation of meals on Thanksgiving each year now we have a chance to serve ourselves through the granting of our school pantry. So it is fitting, thank you Stop & Shop, that we are the first in-school pantry in Brooklyn.

PSEG-LI, Stop & Shop aim to collect enough food for 30,000 healthy meals in summer-long food drive for Island Harvest Food Bank

PSEG Long Island and Stop & Shop are teaming up again this summer to collect food for Island Harvest Food Bank and will be collecting food donations at the Riverhead Stop & Shop on Friday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The second annual Power to Feed Long Island summer-long food drive started with a collection July 1 in Massapequa and consists of six collections at Stop & Shop supermarkets across the island, including the Aug. 5 event in Riverhead.

This second annual summer food drive aims to collect 30,000 healthy, nutritious meals for Long Island families struggling to put food on their tables, according to a press release from PSEG announcing the food drive.

Food insecurity affects more Long Island families than people may realize. In fact, hundreds of thousands of Long Island families struggle with hunger and food insecurity throughout the year. But the struggle grows more acute during the summer months, when there is a significant reduction in food donations to local food banks, pantries and programs, PSEG said.

Compounding the issue, children are not in school where they can receive free and reduced-cost breakfast and lunch. In addition, the pandemic and increased inflation rate have further strained local food pantries and emergency feeding programs served by Island Harvest, the food bank said.

Supermarket Helps Food Bank To Feed Needy

SOMERSET Most of Stop & Shop’s business has to do with selling food. But the supermarket also has been giving back by making donations of food items to the hot meals that are served to the needy at the Church of Our Saviour twice a month and also to the Annelle DeLorme Hagerman Food Bank at the church. And some of Stop & Shop’s employees have been volunteering their time to help with the work when the food and meals are distributed.

Last week, the supermarket gave its biggest donation to the food program at the church, a check for $4,392.

“It’s something we do every year,” said Nelson Barbosa, the store manager of the Somerset Stop & Shop. “We adopt a food bank.”

During the holiday season, customers at the Somerset supermarket could buy paper turkeys for one dollar, three dollars or five dollars under the “Food for Friends” program that were hung up in the store. The proceeds from that sale and how the money was generated to make the donation to the Church of Our Saviour last Friday.

Anywhere from 85 to 150 people are served hot meals at the church twice a month and that many also come to the food bank. Stop & Shop has been partnering with the food program at the Church of Our Saviour for the past two years.

“There’s more and more families in need everyday,” said Patty Frezza, the non-perishable foods manager at Stop & Shop who volunteers her time to help out serving the hot meals to the needy. “There’s more and more families that need food.”

I started telling a lot of my friends that theres actually a food pantry on campus where you can get food, he explained.

Some of the students that are coming in here, theyre also looking for stuff to bring back to their families, she said, explaining that some are balancing being a student and head of household.

The $100,000 grant to Connecticut schools is just part of the $1.5 million Stop and Shop will be providing to colleges in the five states where they have stores.

When You Support Goodwill You Help Make Sure Everyone Has The Opportunity To Thrive

The COVID-19 pandemic has left millions of families with a loss of employment income unlike anything weve experienced since the Great Depression. Individuals in low wage jobs, those with a high school education or less, women, and individuals who identify as Black or Latinx have disproportionately felt this burden due to reduced work hours, lowered wages, furloughs and layoffs.

Too many of their jobs are not coming back, and when opportunities do become available, these job seekers will need new skills to earn a living, advance their careers and support their families.

Your support will help Goodwill® equip community members with the skills they need to get back to work and have the opportunity to thrive.
