This is due, in part, to the fact that many families are struggling to make ends meet. The cost of groceries has increased significantly over the past few years, and wages have not kept up. As a result, families are often forced to choose between groceries and other necessities.

St Marys Food Bank On Track To Break Record Numbers
PHOENIX St. Marys Food Bank announced the organization is quickly approaching record numbers of families in need.
The two main food bank locations, one in Phoenix and the other in Surprise, are seeing 1,239 families per day through the first 12 days of September. Thats 6% higher than Augusts record totals, with around 70 more families each day. Many of these families are first-time clients and clients who have not visited the bank in over a year. Of the nearly 50,000 families that visited both locations in August, almost 10,000 fell into either of those two categories.

The influx has been so great that it has impacted traffic in the area. St. Marys has been forced to send those waiting in lines around the block to prevent traffic on Thomas Road from backing up. The bottom line is we are seeing more clients than we did during the COVID outbreak in the spring of 2020, and we have a lot less food available to us through government programs that kept us going during that time, said the director of public relations for St. Marys Food Bank Jerry Brown.
Brown also said that the food bank is buying more food than ever before, setting the group back financially due to the rising costs of food by inflation. If youd like to donate your time or food to the bank,

Des Staff Volunteers At St Marys Food Bank To Distribute Holiday Food
St. Marys Food Bank Alliance began its 26th annual holiday food distribution this week to provide Thanksgiving meals to thousands of families in need. The Department of Economic Security Division of Aging and Adult Services employees volunteered this week to load carts, place food in vehicles, direct traffic, break down boxes and hand out refreshments to fellow volunteers. Individuals will receive meat, produce, non-perishable items and bread.
Were really lucky that we have the opportunity year after year to help our community partner with this event, said Gloria Garcia-Hernandez, Coordinated Hunger Relief Program Manager. In addition to supporting our partner and helping those we serve this is an excellent team building event.
On Monday alone, volunteers served 4,858 families among the Knight and Surprise locations. This is about 200 more than last year.

St Marys Food Bank Ready To Help After Maricopa Food Pantry Was Destroyed In Fire
A warehouse stocked with pasta and bread in Phoenix holds more than just a few items on a grocery list. Its a lifeline for the Arizona families who are choosing which bills to pay. The rising price of gas. The rising price of rent. The rising price of food, said Jerry Brown with St. Marys Food Bank. Thats hurting everybody. But if youre the person whos on the edge, that pushes you over the edge.
Brown says because of the fire that destroyed more than 50,000 pounds of food at a pantry in Maricopa, it had to cancel orders set to go out this morning. St. Marys provides the Maricopa Food Pantry with more than half of its donations, according to Brown. Buildings you can replace. Food you can replace. People you cant, he said, thankful at least no one was hurt.
St. Marys works with more than 800 partners a year. The nonprofit is ready to donate food, equipment, even a mobile food pantry to the so-called food desert in Maricopa. Thats an area where food is hard to get ahold of. Not very many grocery stores and when youre food insecure and youre relying on a food bank, theres not another one down the block you can go to.
