Food Bank Feeds 187000 Annually
Hunger hurts. And in Southern Arizona there is plenty of hunger to go around.
But there are many people working through the Community Food Bank of Southern Arizona, doing all they can to shorten the lines at food distribution points and teach strategies that help families put food on the table.
Some 187,000 individuals are served each year through the food banks hunger relief direct food handouts and another 17,000 are being served through hunger prevention and education services, said food bank CEO Michael McDonald.
The effort, implemented in concert with 250 corporate and agency partners such as Tucson Unified School District, the Salvation Army and Tucson Medical Center, is threefold feed the hungry, attack hunger by changing attitudes regarding nutrition, and work to lesson poverty, McDonald said. The food bank, located at 3003 S. Country Club Road, is a big operation. It serves people in Pima, Cochise, Graham, Greenlee and Santa Cruz counties.
While we do see our work as a charity, we also see our work as part of economic development and thats why we are increasingly focusing on our clients growing food or making a living through food-related jobs such as in the hospitality industry, he said.
The latter focuses on learning a trade to grow, prepare and/or serve food.
We would like to see that 17,000 figure in the hunger prevention programs grow and see fewer people depending on the free food.

Whether or not you see it plainly in your own neighborhood, the fact remains that Pima County has a high poverty rate. In Southern Arizona, 1 in 4 children live at or below the Federal Poverty Level and 1 in 5 seniors in Arizona goes to bed hungry. As the food bank so aptly puts it, “hunger is closer than you think.”
Seeds Of Change: New Book Follows The Growth Success Of The Community Food Bank Of Southern Arizona
The Community Food Bank ofSouthern Arizona started off as a 600 square foot storefront with one delivery truck and a few boxes of food. Today, it is one of the largest food banks in the nation with more than 200,000 volunteer hours in an average year.
The story of this growth is covered in the new book, Sowing the Seeds of Change, which lays out the history of the CFB and the steps they take to attack the causes of hunger.
As the organization grew over the years, author Seth Schindler was intrigued by their success.
Its an incredible story of growth but its also a sad story, Schindler said. I first responded to an advertisement: researcher wanted by community food bank. They wanted someone to put the information together, maybe a history page on their website.
He began interviewing volunteers and staff, reading old meeting notes and annual reports to capture the complexity of the CFB.
But when he visited the Tucson headquarters, a 140,000 square foot service center, Schindler realized there was a much bigger story to tell.
I couldnt believe it, Schindler said. The scale of the facilitys operations was the first thing that really struck me.
Named food bank of the year by Feeding America in 2018, the CFB serves five counties, covering 23,000 miles. Customers have access to a variety of educational programs and culinary training, emergency food assistance and free meals.

Community Food Bank Of Southern Arizona Receives Early Arizona Gives Day Donation

The Community Food Bank of Southern Arizona received an early Arizona Gives Day present in the form of a $35,000 contribution from local realtors.
The Tucson Association of REALTORS, Tierra Hope Foundation and Long Cares Foundation came together to make the donation.
We are grateful for this support from the Tucson Association of REALTORS, said food bank CEO Michael McDonald. Our doors are open and we continue supplying people with emergency food at this time, even as we see demand increase. Working together with support from our community will allow us to get through these challenging times.
The food bank provides aid and resources to five different counties in Southern Arizona: Cochise, Graham, Greenlee, Pima, and Santa Cruz, totaling 23,000 square miles and over 1.2 million people.
Since the COVID-19 pandemic took hold in Southern Arizona, the food bank is now producing approximately 8,000 meals a week.
The need is great and what better way to give back than through dollar donations, said Steve Redmond, president of Tucson REALTORS Charitable Foundation, in a statement. We felt passionate about giving back especially since Arizona Gives Day is Tuesday, April 7. We encourage people to contribute directly to communityfoodbank.org this Tuesday to make a difference. Volunteers are not respected. I applied twice with the qualifications to do the job and was denied because they picked who they wanted with no qualifications.
Good mission and decent reputation as a non-profit that helps the community.

The CEO, HR, and upper management are horrible. They get paid a ton while they pay lower level staff nothing. Senior management is the whole problem and they are enabled by HR, which doesn’t help employees but rather covers for a toxic culture. This place is good on the surface but is a bad place to work.

Ceo Of Community Food Bank Of Southern Arizona To Step Down In January
TUCSON – The Community of Food Bank of Southern Arizona has begun its process in selecting a new CEO with its leader for a little less than a decade will officially step down from the seat in January.
Under his eight years of service, Michael McDonald helped grow the local nonprofit by aiding in the development of serval new programs and services such as “offering microloans to low-income food entrepreneurs, setting up a cooperative local brokerage for institutional produce buyers, expanding the amount of edible produce rescued at the Mexico border for people in Arizona and beyond, providing critical support for improving local food security through policy-based initiatives, and putting in place an annual multi-million dollar grant making program for the food banks agency partners.”
While the organization flourished under his leadership, McDonald recently announced that he wished to return to environmental conservation work, which was a focus of his early career. As such, he decided to join the Tucson Audubon Society as its executive director once he officials leaves the CEO position in mid-January.
I move on from my work at the Community Food Bank realizing it is time for a change. Im grateful to have been part of a team that I believe has become a collective force for good in our community and beyond,” McDonald said. “I know the next chapter of mission accomplishments for the Food Bank will be an amazing one.”

Here at Southern Arizona Animal Food Bank, we are a local non profit organization driven by a single goal to make sure no one ever has to make the choice between feeding themselves or feeding their animals. As a non-profit, we collect and distribute free pet food to low income, unemployed, elderly and otherwise disadvantaged residents of Southern Arizona. By providing pet food to those in need, we offer an alternative to surrendering or worse, abandoning an animal companion.

Too often our neighbors experience financial strain and are forced to surrender or abandon their animal companions. Southern Arizona Animal Food Bank partners with many local businesses and other organizations to ensure that every animal remains fed and at home with their owners. We provide food for animals in need along with other supplies and community resources.
