South Plains Food Bank U Can Share
LUBBOCK, Texas – There is no doubt that the U Can Share food drive is the biggest fundraiser for the South Plains Food Bank. What you might not know is just how big of an impact your donation has on those who dont know where their next meal is coming from.
Chase Head, Chief Development Officer at the South Plains Food Bank says, Statistics I have seen are 1 in 6 on the South Plains are food insecure, so that is basically saying where is their next meal going to come from.
Head says when COVID-19 hit in 2020, financial struggles came with it. After hunger cases rose, they never dropped.
Really we just dont see the numbers going down, so statistically, it does not look like there is an end in sight. With inflation the way it is, and different things with the economy the need is there, Head said.
Head says during the pandemic federal funding helped many organizations like the South Plains Food Bank but now, two years later, the funds have run out and the need has not.
The biggest issue is we are trying to provide for that same need but we are having to do a lot of it out of pocket and come up with funding in different more creative ways, said Head.
That is why fundraisers like U Can Share are so important. Head says food insecurity affects so many in our community.

South Plains Food Bank Taking On Inflation Along With Larger Demand
LUBBOCK, Texas The South Plains Food Bank is helping hundreds more people a week because of inflation. Unfortunately, those needing food arent the only ones taking the hit.
The food bank serves 20 counties. With the many vehicles they use daily, theyre also using a lot of fuel. Along with high gas and food prices, theyre also facing a decrease in donations and volunteers.
With the need so high, theyve increased their hours to accommodate those who work a 9-5. The food bank is now open from 8:30 a.m. to 5:45 p.m. This has brought them an increase of around 600 more people every week.
Jenifer Smith, the Chief Operations Officer for the food bank said, We know we still have to do the work. We have to ask the community to help us with that cost.
Morgan Baker whos also with the food bank added that because of supply chain issues and increased food prices, some of the food isnt showing up on time like normal.
Were doing what we can to fight that battle. But right now, we still have a lot of people lining up at our dock for food assistance. And we expect that number to rise, Smith explained.

South Plains Food Bank Extends Operating Hours To Accommodate Work Schedules
LUBBOCK, Texas – More people are facing food insecurity now than ever before. Thats according to the director of communications for the South Plains Food Bank, Morgan Baker.
To help people beyond just a nine to five, the food bank will now open at 8:30 a.m. and close at 5:45 p.m.
Baker says this is usually the busiest time of the year for the food bank, but because of inflation and the price of gas rising, this year its worse.
Those parents are having to provide an extra 10 meals a week per child. So, if you have two children, thats an extra 20 meals a week youre having to provide to your family, Baker said. If youre already struggling and maybe on the verge of food insecurity, that can send you right over the edge.
Baker says a lot of people are coming to the food bank for the first time. He wants to emphasize that asking for help is never something to be ashamed of because everyone has economic struggles.
Its nothing to be embarrassed of to need help, Baker said. Everybody at different points in their lives goes through different things and for some people, thats food insecurity.
A lot of the people they help are from rural communities. With the rising price of gas, Baker wants to remind people that the food bank comes to you in those communities.
While they were deciding how to better serve the rural communities, they came up with the idea to be open longer.

The South Plains Food Bank , located in Lubbock, Texas, serves communities throughout West Texas by providing a helping hand to those experiencing food insecurity. This community-based organization was formed 38 years ago by Carolyn Lanier and Lodie Kemper who saw an opportunity to help others and make a difference in their community. Since then, the organization has grown and now extends throughout 20 counties in West Texas and employs more than 9,000 volunteers per year.
We do so much more than just feed people. Our mission statement is to alleviate hunger and give hope to the hungry and we embody that statement in all we do, whether that be through our programs, classes or everyday work, said SPFB, Communications Manager Morgan Baker.
SPFB offers several programs for volunteers and community members to participate in that give hope and enrich lives. They offer several programs within their Childrens Feeding Programs such as Kids Café which is an after-school feeding program to combat childhood hunger. They also have Summer Feeding, Snack Pack and Holiday Box programs. Additionally, their Mobile Pantry program partners with agencies in 19 of the 20 counties they serve to deliver food boxes to their most rural locations.
SPFB funding comes from area donors and food donations. Their donations greatly help them to be able to provide for their community while also helping them keep their programs going and their building maintained so they can continue to serve others.

After a two year hiatus, the National Association of Letter Carriers and South Plains Food Bank are once again gathering food items for Stamp Out Hunger on May 14th, 2022. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, 2019 was the last year either of these organizations were able to participate in the national campaign that feeds millions across the country. Thats what makes this year so important.
There are about 98,000 people facing food insecurity across the South Plains said Meagan Bratton, Chief Development Officer at the South Plains Food Bank. During the Summer, families with children have to provide at least an extra 10 meals per week, per child, because theyre not getting those meals from schools. If youre already struggling, that can really push a family over the edge. Thats what Stamp Out Hunger is looking to solve.
The South Plains Food Bank is asking for donations of pre-packaged pouches of tuna and jars of peanut butter this year to strategically fill gaps in the nutrition of families facing food insecurity. One of the most difficult things for us to provide families is protein says Jenifer Smith, Chief Operations Officer at the South Plains Food Bank. Thats something that can really be a game changer when it comes to satiating hunger and providing proper nutrition.
