Second Harvest Seeks Support For Give To The Max Day

With few days to go, Second Harvest North Central Food Bank is asking for support in helping meet its $20,000 Challenge Match. Give a gift now through Nov. 17 and the Board of Directors along with the Initiative Foundation, Olson Construction Law, Sandy and Greg Lanzo and two anonymous donors could match a gift up to $20,000 as part of Give to the Max Day.

Give to the Max Day, Nov. 17, is Minnesotas Day of Giving, when thousands of donors across Minnesota will rally around their favorite charities by making gifts through GiveMN to increase the wellbeing of their communities.

In addition to the $20,000 Challenge Match, GiveMN offers opportunities for a gift to win Give to the Max prize grants. Not only can you help Second Harvest, but you could help your favorite nonprofits and schools win part of the $100,000-plus Prize Pool. There are 143 chances to win during Give to the Max Day and Early Giving.

New research by The University of Calgary identifies the direct link between government policy and food bank use.

Using Daily Bread Food Bank data, the report reveals that that food bank visits directly rise with increases in rent, with falls in minimum wage and with reductions in the disability benefits available to individuals requiring social assistance.

Second Harvest Food Shelf

The food shelf at Second Harvest provides hunger relief for people living in Grand Rapids and the surrounding area.

People who need help with food can come to the food shelf during open hours. A brief intake process records information on address, number of people in the household and household income. Volunteers help participants choose from available food in appropriate amounts for the family size. The foods available change constantly but often include canned soups and vegetables, cereal, produce, breads, meat and dairy.

Donations of food and garden produce are always welcome and appreciated! Donations can be made during the open hours listed below.

Volunteers are the lifeblood of the food shelf. If you are interested in stocking shelves on weekday mornings or assisting participants during open hours, contact the program coordinator for more information and for volunteer openings.

Kids Pack Backpack Program

For children who may have limited food in the home over the weekend or holidays, Kids Packs Backpacks provide a package of food once a month to help them get by. Each pack contains 8-12 kid friendly food items that can be consumed with little or no preparation. The packs are distributed discreetly by school staff to children who may be at-risk of hunger when they dont have access to school meals. Each pack also contains a simple nutrition handout.

Duluths Second Harvest Food Bank Purchases New Facility For $6 Million

DULUTH, MN â Sometime in the next two years, the Northlands largest hunger-relief organization will have a new home.

Second Harvest Northern Lakes Food Bank recently purchased the IKONICS building in West Duluth for roughly $6 million.

Weve been negotiating a deal for the facility we just purchased, said Second Harvest Executive Director Shaye Moris. Were excited to be able to expand our operations.

The Food Bank provides supplies to more than 40 different partners around Northern Minnesota and Northwest Wisconsin.

This food bank provides over 7 million pounds of product every year, thats about 5.6 million meals, said Moris.

According to Moris, the Food Bank has seen a large number of people suffering from food insecurity due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Were seeing record numbers again at food shelves, and our program. So really, the need is still there, she said, this facility kind of outgrew our need for what we were doing.

The Food Bank had to partner with SuperOne to store roughly 30 pallets of food offsite due to high demand.

Partners like Barry Schull with the Fruit of the Vine Food Shelf, which operates out of the Vineyard Church in Duluth, say it could help them better serve the community.

They will have larger facilities and more capacity, and so they should be more responsive than ever and have a bigger selection, he said.

The Food Banks new facility will nearly triple its operating space.

Duluth, MN Second Harvest Northern Lakes Food Bank is permanently waiving fees for the nationally and regionally donated food it provides to the 75 NE Minnesota and NW Wisconsin food shelves, soup kitchens, shelters and the other non-profit agency partners it supplies as the regions only food bank. This announcement comes at a time when demand has increased beyond pandemic levels and when communities like Moose Lake need the food bank most.

Were seeing a 32% increase at our regions food shelves, shares Shaye Moris, executive director, Second Harvest Northern Lakes Food Bank. We made our decision to waive fees to ensure our regions non-profit partners could be as generous as possible to those facing hunger in their local communities. So many of our neighbors have been impacted by the pandemic, economic impacts of inflation and a high cost of living recently that we felt it an important time to make this decision.

Although often confused with a food shelf , Second Harvest Northern Lakes Food Bank is the regions only food bank supplying non-profit programs with nationally and regionally donated food and non-food items. Prior to their decision, agency partners paid an average $.02 per pound fee to share Second Harvests cost of food acquisition, storage and distribution.

Each year Second Harvest Northern Lakes Food Bank provides over 6.5 million pounds of product to the 75 non-profit agencies it serves throughout NE Minnesota and NW Wisconsin .
