Lowndes County Second Harvest Awarded $18 Million To Build New Food Bank Hq

LOWNDES COUNTY, Ga. The Lowndes County Board of County Commissioners and Second Harvest of South Georgia were awarded $18 million in grants Tuesday to expand the capacity of the regional food bank through a new facility.

The grant money comes from the Georgia Department of Community Affairs under the federal CARES Act for the Community Development Block Grant – Coronavirus program, according to a release.

The impact of an investment like this is a game-changer, and we are blessed to have leadership in Lowndes County that embraces our future vision, said Second Harvest CEO Frank Richards. We will be able to grow programs that have been constricted by our current capacity and establish new programs to reach those who are slipping through the cracks of the safety.

The current location, built in 1996, is not sized for or equipped to handle the scope of the hunger and disaster relief work that the organization is now being called upon to provide, Second Harvest of South Georgia wrote.

The project is also receiving a $500,000 grant from the Valdosta-Lowndes County Development Authority that will go toward site infrastructure.

The project is in the design phase, and construction is expected to begin this fall. Second Harvest of South Georgia will be announcing a capital campaign soon to raise the remainder of the funding needed to complete this project.

Chicken Salad Chick donates $2,600 to Second Harvest

In 1982, a small group of volunteers representing several Valdosta churches formed the Unity Food Bank with the goal of giving community non-profits with easy, affordable access to the foods and services necessary to carry out their charitable work. The group operated in a borrowed basement, distributing loads of food donated from another community food bank. Over the last 31 years, the organization has grown and transformed changing names and leadership, becoming independent and nationally-accredited, and expanding geographically and operationally.

Today, Second Harvest of South Georgia is the leading hunger-relief organization in the region and the second largest food bank in the state. We serve a 12,675 square mile region made up of 30 counties.

Second Harvest Of South Ga Adopts Hungry At Home Program

VALDOSTA, Ga. – A South Georgia food bank is stepping in to help another local food program struggling during the pandemic.

Second Harvest of South Georgia is taking in the Hungry at Home program, which Second Harvest plans to expand on.

Hungry at Home was founded in 2011 by Teresa Parkerson. She was a teacher at an elementary school in Lake Park.

After noticing kids coming to class on Mondays hungry, Pakerson and another teacher investigated.

They decided to begin a program that would help feed students on the weekends.

Through fundraisers and donations, the program was born.

Meals were sent home for the weekend with students. The program, which started with 63 students, has now grown to over 650 students in eight school districts across six counties.

Since the pandemic hit, the volunteer-based program has suffered.

So, I knew it was time to make a change. I called Second Harvest and they were so wonderful and accepting and just ready to help us out. This transition has been easy and Im just so grateful to them that they are ready to take Hungry at Home on and take it to the next level, which I know theyll do, said Parkerson.

Meals are sent home with students in backpacks on Thursdays and Fridays. Inside, theres easy to prepare food that can last the entire weekend.

Second Harvest plans to expand to more schools and counties.
