Second Harvest Food Bank Announces Volunteer Of The Year
Second Harvest of the Big Bend has named John Martin as the food banks 2020 Volunteer of the Year. Martin is an inaugural member of Second Harvests Volunteer Hall of Fame, and is a Legacy-level award winner, with more than 1,500 volunteer service hours dedicated.
We are thrilled to recognize John as our volunteer of the year, said Shari Hubbard, director of community relations for Second Harvest. John epitomizes dedication, leadership and positivity in short, he is a dream volunteer, she added.
Florida food bank volunteers are designated as essential workers during the COVID-19 pandemic. Second Harvest practices social distancing and provides volunteers with personal safety equipment including gloves, masks and hand sanitizer.
Our volunteers are service heroes, and they are critical to Second Harvests ability to continue providing food for our communitys most vulnerable citizens, especially now, said Hubbard.
Second Harvest also honored 16 volunteers with the Presidents Volunteer Service Award, including Martin, who earned a Gold award for 500 service hours during the past year. David Mueller received a silver award, and the following volunteers received the bronze service award: Kristine Lamont, Wayne McDaniel, Nat Toulon, Jimbo Harrison, Diane Gomez, Bettie Grant, Charlotte Hicks, Christine Franzetti, Jeanette Deatherage, Wilson Enfinger, Fred Karuga, Brian Lupiani and Austin Tatum.
Support Group For Dementia Caregivers
Alzheimer’s Project and The Villas at Killearn Lakes are hosting a Support Group for those who have a loved one with dementia who lives in a facility.
Connect with other families at the with the support group at 6:30 p.m. on the 1st and 3rd Tuesdays of the month. It’s an opportunity to talk to people who may be experiencing similar challenges. Call 850-386-2778 to learn more or visit alzheimersproject.org.

Growing A Partnership With Lotts Community Garden
As a member of Sustainable Tallahassee, a long-time community gardener and an ardent proponent of school/community gardening initiatives, Lotts Community Garden is a good example of a community partner.
As a supplement to the produce program, and with the generous cooperation of Edwin Lott, Lotts Community Garden, has grown a rotation of produce to add nutritious items that may not be readily available from the donor network.
Lotts Community Garden is a growing and educational facility located 15 minutes from Tallahassee at 39 Lott Road, Monticello. Thanks to the close relationship with Lotts, produce harvested by volunteers is brought back to the Second Harvest warehouse and offered to community partners at the peak of its freshness.

Second Harvest Schedules Mobile Food Distributions
Second Harvest food bank has scheduled three free food distribution events this week supported by Leon CARES funding to serve 1,400 families and provide more than 39,000 meals for our neighbors struggling during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Leon County mobile food distributions will take place as follows:
Thursday, September 24:
500 Appleyard Drive
9 a.m – noon
All will be a drive-through distributions. Citizens should plan to stay in their cars and follow social distancing protocols as instructed by onsite Second Harvest staff and volunteers. Food is available to any Leon County resident in need, and will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis.
Additional food distributions will take place in Gadsden, Franklin, Madison, Gulf and Jefferson Counties. For the updated weekly list of distribution locations, dates and times, citizens should visit fightinghunger.org.

Second Harvest Of The Big Bend
Second Harvest of the Big Bend is part of Feeding America and Feeding Florida with a network of 12 food banks throughout the state.
The two main objectives as noted in Second Harvests mission statement are:
- Feeding the hungry in the Big Bend through our network of partner agencies
- Educating and engaging the community in the fight against hunger.
Partner Agencies: Second Harvest collaborates with 135 partner agencies in 11 counties to distribute food to those in need partner agencies include soup kitchens, food pantries, churches, schools and other nonprofits.
Disaster Relief: Second Harvest of the Big Bend serves as one of the states three emergency food distribution hubs. As such, they play a statewide role in the coordination of emergency food and water in response to disasters, statewide, and regionally.
They also work collaboratively with disaster relief agencies including FEMA, Red Cross, The United Way, Big Bend COAD which includes 2-1-1 Big Bend, Salvation Army, VolunteerLeon, Regional EOCs and other agencies.
Volunteer Groups: Like most nonprofits and all food banks, Second Harvest relies heavily on volunteer support. Many are volunteer groups which conduct service projects on a bi-weekly, weekly or monthly basis.
Other Food Banks: In addition to our defined service area, they also serve six additional counties under agreement with other north Florida food banks.

Free Food Pantries Tallahassee And Leon County
Families in need in Leon County and Tallahassee Florida may qualify for free groceries, clothing and other support services. A number of assistance programs are offered across the region from non-profit pantries, churches and soup kitchens. Volunteers and donations from the community ensure that the greatest number of people get help, both year round and also near the holidays.
Each and every food bank or pantry offers their own services and as well as resources to families in the community. In addition, the pantries all have conditions that need to be met. Some centers require that the applicant be referred by another social service agency or government organization. Other locations in Leon County are open very limited hours. If more information is needed on other assistance programs, then find addition.
Some of the resources offered in the Tallahassee area include free groceries for low income families, meals, government surplus food, clothing, baby formula, and holiday meals. Many of the pantries can also distribute furniture, personal products and may have funds to pay certain basic needs such as utilities, rent, and medical bills.

Tallahassee Foodies Raised Over $11k At Our Inaugural Under The Harvest Moon Dinner Benefitting Second Harvest Of The Big Bend
Once upon a time, my friend Katie reached out and said, hey Jen, you should do some sort of fun dinner for Harvest Moon.
That exact day, Id had a coffee date with my friends at Second Harvest about hosting a fundraising dinner, hopefully filling seats with our amazing Tallahassee Foodies members, and thank goodness something clicked in my mind that a Harvest Moon dinner should absolutely be our fundraising moment for Second Harvest! The emphasis on food and harvesting is the most perfect pairing!
The term harvest moon refers to the full, bright moon that occurs closest to the start of autumn. The name dates from the time before electricity, when farmers depended on the moons light to harvest their crops late into the night. This year, the Harvest Moon fell on September 10th.
At this point, the ideas started flowing. As if Harvest Moon for Second Harvest wasnt a wonderful enough fit, guess what else was meant to be Chef Leon on the board of Second Harvest, and lucky for all of us, he couldnt have been more excited to donate his time to this wonderful opportunity!
So now we needed a location. Tallahassee Nurseries was so happy to donate their space for this amazing gathering under their gorgeous centerpiece gazebo, but my goodness if the weather didnt have other plans!

Second Harvest Of The Big Bend Works With Publix To Feed Families
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – With 36,000 people in Leon County considered food insecure, Second Harvest of the Big Bend is working to address this need for families.
Thursday, Publix employees volunteered with Second Harvest through packing boxes to help feed several North Florida communities.
Second Harvest Big Bend CEO, Monique Ellsworth, says this will help feed more families as it provides them healthier food at home. She says one challenge with inflation and rising costs of living is that people are choosing between things like medication and buying healthy food options.
High quality and high volume food into the food bank, so things were packing today are fresh produce and reclaimed dry goods that come to us from grocers and what it does, Ellsworth said. Its an immediate influx of food that were able to pack up and send to our neighbors in need.
She says that usually ends with people receiving less nutritious meals but making donations like groceries from Publix is a big help.
Publix store manager, Alexandra Henry, shares that since working with Second Harvest, it has changed her perspective on the number of people that are in need.
Its probably one of the most honoring and humbling experiences Ive had in my entire life, said Henry. It has just completely opened my eyes to things in our community that you dont see on a daily basis.
