Dewine Visits Second Harvest In Springfield Thanks National Guard For Serving
Gov. Mike DeWine visited the Second Harvest Food Bank in Springfield Friday afternoon to show his appreciation to the more than two dozen members of the Ohio National Guard that have been helping out there for more than 15 months.
The governors visit marked the last day those members will be serving at the foodbank as they stepped in last March to aid in its operations.
Members of the Ohio National Guard have received, packed, and distributed approximately 150 million pounds of food and groceries to over 2.9 million Ohioans throughout the coronavirus pandemic, according to the Governors office.
DeWine stated that he wanted to thank those members as they helped distribute food at a time when demand for those services drastically increased due to coronavirus pandemic.
They filled an absolutely critical role in making sure that Ohioans that did not have food had food, he told reporters in Springfield.
Second Harvest typically serves 4.5 million meals a year to those living in Clark, Champaign and Logan counties. However, the nonprofit has served 11 million meals since March 2020, according to its executive director Tyra Jackson.
The pandemic disrupted the operations of food banks across the state and the economic impacts drove up demand for those services.
They worked Monday through Friday at Second Harvest for the past 15 months.

First Lady Fran Dewine Is Keynote Speaker
SPRINGFIELD Second Harvest Food Bank of Clark, Champaign, and Logan Counties is hosting its annual Harvest Breakfast Friday, September 16 from 8-10 a.m. at the Hollenbeck Bayley Creative Arts and Conference Center.
The Harvest Breakfast keynote speaker will be First Lady, Fran DeWine. As First Lady, Fran uses her platform to advocate for the health and well-being of children in Ohio by partnering with initiatives and organizations that share her passion. The First Lady seeks to share her love f cooking with Ohios young people. Her public life has focused on making sure children have access to nutritious meals. This mission extends to educating children about where their food comes from and giving them the knowledge and resources to make informed choices about nutrition as they grow up.
Additional speakers include Ohio Association of Foodbanks Executive Director, Lisa Hamler-Fugitt to talk about child hunger at a state level. Superintendent of Springfield City Schools, Dr. Robert Hill to speak at the local level and Food Dignity Founder, Clancy Harrison to touch on unconscious biases.

How do children in need receive reliable, nutritious meals during the school summer break? Second Harvest Food Bank!
Second Harvest Food Bank steps up to meet this need with their Childrens Summer Feeding program. During the school year, children in the Springfield City School district receive free breakfast and lunch, Monday through Friday. When school is on summer break, many families still need a source of nutritious meals for their children.
To help ensure our communitys children dont go hungry, Community Health Foundation provided Second Harvest a grant of $30,000 for the summer feeding programs packaged meals and a grant of $20,000 to supplement the meals with fresh fruits and vegetables. The meals are given out at multiple sites over a 10-week period visit www.theshfb.org for more information.

Summer Food Service Program
No more early mornings. No more classes. No more homework. No more tests. However, for many students, the end of summer also signals the end to guaranteed meals on a regular basis.The Summer Food Service Program aims to provide children with free, healthy meals during the summer months when school is not in session and when many children often face missing meals and lack of proper nutrition.
This summer, Second Harvest Food Bank has teamed up with local schools and community organizations to provide children ages 1-18 with free, healthy meals. The meals will be pre-packaged and distributed at sites in Clark, Champaign and Logan Counties. Each child will receive 5 breakfast and 5 lunch meals per week. Adults are permitted to pick up for children. Limit one site per week.

Second Harvest Food Bank Offering Weekend Meals To Clark Champaign Children
The Second Harvest Food Bank is working with several schools and community agencies to offer weekend meals to students and children.
We reached out to all the school districts and especially schools that have high rates of free and reduce lunches. Children receive breakfast and lunch during the school day, and the weekend bags provide the same during the weekend to ensure they dont miss a meal, said Tyra Jackson, Executive Director of SHFB.
Some of the places that the food bank offers meals to in Clark County include: Clark County Public Library Cliff Park High School Early Childhood Education Center Greenon New Carlisle Elementary Northwestern Elementary School Springfield Childrens Center and Springfield City Schools including Lagonda, Fulton, Lincoln and Perrin Woods.
The Clark County Public Library will be a distribution site for the BackPack Program, which is a weekly program that provides a backpack full of food for children ages one to 18 to take home on the weekends.
The distribution sites and times are:
Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 7:45 p.m. at the Main Library, 201 S. Fountain Ave.
Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 7:45 p.m. at the Park Branch, 1119 Bechtle Ave.
Fridays from 10 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. at the Village Branch, 1123 Sunset Ave. and at the Enon Branch, 209 E. Main St.
Vickie Hoffman, Triads Superintendent, said the food bank started offering weekend meals to their students earlier in September.

Age 18 and up | Group of 5-10 people | M, W, Th, F 10am-3pm | T 11am-7pm | Ability to lift up to 40lbsSort or Pack: Assist with sorting food items into appropriate bins, pack items into boxes, weigh the boxes, and place on appropriate pallets for proper storage or distribution. Individual volunteers may be working with other groups or volunteers.
Assist with distributing food to individuals who participate in the mobile drive-thru distributions located throughout Champaign, Clark, and Logan County. Ability to lift up to 40 lbs.

SNAP provides families with their basic nutritional needs to get them through temporary hard times. It helps people get back on their feet and on the road to a better life in 2015, SNAP lifted 4.6 million Americans above the poverty line, including 2 million children and 366,000 seniors. Moreover, SNAP helps to ensure that children are given a fair chance at healthy adulthood, that seniors age with dignity and that family can care for themselves.
