However, for many students, the end of summer also signals the end to guaranteed meals on a regular basis. The Summer Food Service Program aims to provide children with free, healthy meals during the summer months when school is not in session and when many children often face missing meals and lack of proper nutrition.

This summer, Second Harvest Food Bank has teamed up with local schools and community organizations to provide children ages 1-18 with free, healthy meals. The meals will be pre-packaged and distributed at sites in Clark, Champaign and Logan Counties. Each child will receive 5 breakfast and 5 lunch meals per week. Adults are permitted to pick up for children. Limit one site per week.

    Why Is Snap Important

Second Harvest Food Bank CEO fears food supply shortages next year amid pandemic

SNAP provides families with their basic nutritional needs to get them through temporary hard times. It helps people get back on their feet and on the road to a better life in 2015, SNAP lifted 4.6 million Americans above the poverty line, including 2 million children and 366,000 seniors. Moreover, SNAP helps to ensure that children are given a fair chance at healthy adulthood, that seniors age with dignity and that family can care for themselves. SNAP is absolutely critical to making sure no one in America goes hungry.

On top of that, SNAP supports Americas economy and creates jobs. Research from Moodys Analytics suggests that for every dollar spent by SNAP, 1.7 dollars are added to the economy. A 2010 study by the USDA found that for every $1 billion of added SNAP funding, between 8,900 and 17,000 jobs were created. By contrast, another study found that for every $1 billion in cuts, 11,437 jobs would be destroyed.

    How Does Snap Work

SNAP provides timely, targeted, and temporary benefits to people in need so that Americans have access to nutritious food. SNAP responds quickly to changes in our population, growing in response to increases in poverty and unemployment, and shrinking as the need is met and reduced. SNAP is administered by the states, which have considerable discretion to adapt the program to best meet the needs of their residents.

    How It Works

Second Harvest Food Bank sees meal distribution double during coronavirus pandemic

Second Harvest delivers nutritious food directly to the people who need it most. A refrigerated truck transports 8,000 to 10,000 pounds of food to community centers, church parking lots, businesses, and other locations. Volunteers set up and distribute food to up to 300 families in just two hours. The Mobile Market truck serves larger populations, often in rural areas with less access to fresh produce and other perishable foods.

Second Harvest also gets food directly to people facing hunger with a converted public bus transformed into a walk-through market. The bus can visit sites that larger food delivery trucks cant access and allows Second Harvest to increase the number and frequency of its food access points. The bus also targets specific populations like families with children or seniors in retirement communities. Up to 75 families receive food at each distribution.

Want to help solve hunger? Fill out an application below to sponsor a Mobile Market in your community.
