Triad Food Banks See An Increased Need While Dealing With Food Staffing Shortages

Large donation will help feed one million Triad families

GUILFORD COUNTY, N.C. Feeding America is a challenge these days.

Families are budgeting for food, and the organizations set up to help them are struggling to keep up with the demand.

We generally always had four to eight weeks of food in advance. Now, were about one week out at a time, Program Director of Backpack Beginnings Mallory Goodman said.

She has seen the number of Guilford County students signing up for weekend food bags shoot up by the hundreds in the last few weeks.

Many of the shelves at their Greensboro location were either bare or empty.

Its a similar struggle at the Second Harvest Food Bank.

In the 18 counties we serve, we have seen an increase in assistance over the last multiple months. Its just challenging times with inflation, food shortages, said CEO of SHFB Eric Aft.

Both organizations have seen new faces come through their doors.

We have seen a lot of families who have not visited a food pantry beforewere all a paycheck away from doing that, Aft said.

At a time we are preparing to gather around a table to celebrate a holiday centered around food, families worry their Thanksgiving will be different.

Since January of 2022, we have seen an increased need even over and above what we saw in the pandemic, Vice President of Human resources of SHFB Rebecca Nelson.

Feed People Not Landfills

America has more than enough food to feed everyone. But our abundance is accompanied by tremendous waste. By some estimates, nearly half of the food grown, processed, and transported in the U.S. goes to waste, as millions of Americans struggle to put food on the table.

It was these contrasting realities that led to the innovation of food banking. Working with retail grocers, farmers, food manufacturers, processors, and others, Second Harvest Food Banks food recovery operations prevent good food from going to waste by instead distributing it to local, food assistance programs.

What We Aim To Solve

Hunger for Change

Too many working families in North Carolina live one unforeseen expense away from hunger. For many others, their working years are behind them and their fixed incomes have not kept up with the cost of living. The future that Second Harvest Food Bank envisions is one where hunger is a thing of the past.

With the ever changing nature of our work, it is critical that we have access to a strong pool of temporary workers to ensure we get vital food assistance where it is needed most. Not only has Debbies Staffing done a good job of providing us individuals that fill this need, we have also turned to Debbies for long-term candidates for a variety of more permanent positions. With Debbies we feel like a valued customer and that we have a true partner in executing our mission.

Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest N.C. and UnitedHealthcare unveiled a new mobile food pantry partnership and teaching kitchen at a ribbon cutting event in Greensboro on October 18.

And on Monday, November 14, the mobile pantry will make its community debut at Hall Tower Apartments on North Church Street, a Greensboro Housing Authority senior living facility.

This work really requires a lot of collaboration, so having our partnership with UnitedHealthcare is amazing, said Kina Charles, Director of Nutrition Services at Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest N.C. Anything that we can do to increase access to healthy foods is a plus. We recognize that one significant barrier for many people, especially seniors, is transportation. Reaching those who cant reach the brick-and-mortar food banks is the driver.

While in the community, the mobile food bank will provide fresh produce, teach kitchen demonstrations, distribute educational resources, and conduct minor health screenings like blood pressure checks. Volunteers will also be on hand to sign people up for county-led Food and Nutrition services, like SNAP .

Second Harvest serves as the primary source for food for a network of more than 500 local food assistance programs serving communities throughout 18 Northwest North Carolina counties.

The 4.9-acre property at 3655 Reed St. contains a 64,120-square-foot building.

Second Harvest chief executive Eric Aft said in January that the sale proceeds would go toward a $10 million capital campaign.

We designed our plans for the new building to include the proceeds from the sale of the existing facility, Alt said. We are leasing back from the new owners until we move into the new location.

Second Harvest said the new building will make food receiving and distribution more efficient and make it possible to lift limitations now in place on accepting fresh food.

Storage capacity for such items will double. The nonprofit said the enhanced center would also support real-time data collection so that it is possible to target help where it is needed the most.

Aft said in January that the sale proceeds would go toward fulfilling a $10 million capital campaign.

The nonprofit launched in May 2021 the public phase of the $10 million capital campaign with the announcement that more than $9.4 million is already in hand.

With the Hunger for Change campaign goal that close, Aft said in May that the campaign wouldnt stop at $10 million since the needs are so great.

Operations, such as Providence Culinary Training, can expand, and new job-training programs that work in line with Second Harvests mission and goals can be started, officials said.

Tax Filings And Audits By Year

The IRS Form 990 is an annual information return that most organizations claiming federal tax-exempt status must file yearly. Read the IRS instructions for 990 forms.

If this organization has filed an amended return, it may not be reflected in the data below. Duplicated download links may be due to resubmissions or amendments to an organizations original return.

Nonprofit organizations that spend $750,000 or more in Federal grant money in a fiscal year are required to submit an audit covering their finances and compliance. Some of these are program specific, while others, called single audits, look at the entire organization. Nonprofit Explorer has PDFs of these audits for some nonprofits for fiscal year 2015 and later. Theyre provided by the Federal Audit Clearinghouse.

  • The Internal Revenue Service is substantially delayed in processing and releasing nonprofit filings, so documents available here may not be the most recent an organization has filed. ProPublica posts new tax forms as they are released by the IRS.

Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest NC addresses hunger holistically, addressing immediate food needs while focusing on the root causes of hunger in an 18-county region.

This includes distributing fresh and healthy foods, creating partnerships with local grocers and over 470+ partner programs, reducing food waste, providing nutrition education, advocacy, and creating career pathways through the Triad Culinary Training program.

Hunger for Change

Food alone doesnt solve hunger.

With an already existing need that was exacerbated by the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest NC set out on a capital campaign of $12M to consolidate and expand their headquarters and distribution capacity.

Planned facilities in Winston-Salem will address spatial and logistical constraints to accept additional food resources and volunteers, as well as technology inefficiencies, while an additional distribution center in Greensboro has already increased distribution capacity. The campaign also looks to expand the Providence Culinary Training program, leading to increased economic independence for more students.

M Creative helped Second Harvest paint the bigger picture of hunger to their ever-widening circle of partners and donors, engaging their commitment to alleviate hunger and its root causes in our region.

Hunger is about more than going hungry.

What We Do

Second Harvest Food Bank spends millions to address food insecurity

Throughout 18 counties of Northwest North Carolina, Second Harvest Food Bank serves as a central and essential source for nutritious food and services for a network of 460+ local programs. Our partners include food pantries, shelters, soup kitchens, and meal programs for vulnerable children and seniors. We strive to make sure that families have the nutritious food they need for their health and well-being and to be their best at work and in life.

Through strategic partnerships with retail grocers, farmers, and others, we prevent good food from going to waste by redirecting it to people and communities that need it most. We supplement this recovered food through on-going food drives and food purchases to ensure a steady supply of staple food items for our grocery assistance partners.

Beyond Food For Today, our work is also focused on addressing the root causes of food insecurity. We operate Providence, a family of programs that includes a culinary job training and residency program, two non-profit restaurants, and a ready-to-heat meals operation that serves at-risk children and vulnerable seniors and adults. We provide nutrition education classes and a teaching garden. We collaborate and advocate for programs and policies that help families grow stronger. All to create healthy, hunger-free communities where we all want to live.
