Triad Food Banks See An Increased Need While Dealing With Food Staffing Shortages
GUILFORD COUNTY, N.C. Feeding America is a challenge these days.
Families are budgeting for food, and the organizations set up to help them are struggling to keep up with the demand.
We generally always had four to eight weeks of food in advance. Now, were about one week out at a time, Program Director of Backpack Beginnings Mallory Goodman said.
She has seen the number of Guilford County students signing up for weekend food bags shoot up by the hundreds in the last few weeks.
Many of the shelves at their Greensboro location were either bare or empty.
Its a similar struggle at the Second Harvest Food Bank.
In the 18 counties we serve, we have seen an increase in assistance over the last multiple months. Its just challenging times with inflation, food shortages, said CEO of SHFB Eric Aft.
Both organizations have seen new faces come through their doors.
We have seen a lot of families who have not visited a food pantry beforewere all a paycheck away from doing that, Aft said.
At a time we are preparing to gather around a table to celebrate a holiday centered around food, families worry their Thanksgiving will be different.
Since January of 2022, we have seen an increased need even over and above what we saw in the pandemic, Vice President of Human resources of SHFB Rebecca Nelson.

Feed People Not Landfills
America has more than enough food to feed everyone. But our abundance is accompanied by tremendous waste. By some estimates, nearly half of the food grown, processed, and transported in the U.S. goes to waste, as millions of Americans struggle to put food on the table.
It was these contrasting realities that led to the innovation of food banking. Working with retail grocers, farmers, food manufacturers, processors, and others, Second Harvest Food Banks food recovery operations prevent good food from going to waste by instead distributing it to local, food assistance programs.

Too many working families in North Carolina live one unforeseen expense away from hunger. For many others, their working years are behind them and their fixed incomes have not kept up with the cost of living. Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest N.C. and UnitedHealthcare unveiled a new mobile food pantry partnership and teaching kitchen at a ribbon cutting event in Greensboro on October 18.
And on Monday, November 14, the mobile pantry will make its community debut at Hall Tower Apartments on North Church Street, a Greensboro Housing Authority senior living facility.
This work really requires a lot of collaboration, so having our partnership with UnitedHealthcare is amazing, said Kina Charles, Director of Nutrition Services at Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest N.C. Anything that we can do to increase access to healthy foods is a plus. We recognize that one significant barrier for many people, especially seniors, is transportation. Reaching those who cant reach the brick-and-mortar food banks is the driver.
While in the community, the mobile food bank will provide fresh produce, teach kitchen demonstrations, distribute educational resources, and conduct minor health screenings like blood pressure checks. Volunteers will also be on hand to sign people up for county-led Food and Nutrition services, like SNAP .
Second Harvest serves as the primary source for food for a network of more than 500 local food assistance programs serving communities throughout 18 Northwest North Carolina counties.

Second Harvest chief executive Eric Aft said in January that the sale proceeds would go toward a $10 million capital campaign.
We designed our plans for the new building to include the proceeds from the sale of the existing facility, Alt said. We are leasing back from the new owners until we move into the new location.
Second Harvest said the new building will make food receiving and distribution more efficient and make it possible to lift limitations now in place on accepting fresh food.
Storage capacity for such items will double. The nonprofit said the enhanced center would also support real-time data collection so that it is possible to target help where it is needed the most.
Aft said in January that the sale proceeds would go toward fulfilling a $10 million capital campaign.
The nonprofit launched in May 2021 the public phase of the $10 million capital campaign with the announcement that more than $9.4 million is already in hand.
With the Hunger for Change campaign goal that close, Aft said in May that the campaign wouldnt stop at $10 million since the needs are so great.
Operations, such as Providence Culinary Training, can expand, and new job-training programs that work in line with Second Harvests mission and goals can be started, officials said.

The non profit Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest North Carolina works to reduce hunger in northwestern North Carolina. According to its website, the food bank:
- Acquires and distributes food to supplement the food needs of faith and community-based organizations
- Advocates for the rights of hungry people
- Educates the public about hunger
- Pursues partnerships with like-minded organizations.
Last week, Second Harvest partnered with 160 advocates to exchange ideas on how to combat hunger in the Winston Salem, N.C. area.
At Wake Forest Universitys Innovation Quarter in downtown Winston Salem, academics, corporate leaders, small business men and women, politicians and people from organizations helping the poor sat across from people who had experienced what it was like to go hungry. They shared ideas on how to deal with the problem.
Organizers called the event Feeding Change: An Interactive Community Conversation on Hunger.
