Second Harvest Food Bank of East Tennessee, a member of Feeding America, has worked to compassionately feed the hungry since 1982. In FY20, Second Harvest distributed 21 million pounds of food across 18 East Tennessee counties. Second Harvest Food Bank To Host Food Distribution Event

Scouting for Food
The food box will include enough food to feed a household of four for approximately five days.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. Second Harvest Food Bank will host an onsite food distribution next week. The food giveaway will be on Thursday, March 10 from 10 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Second Harvest Food Bank of East Tennessee, 136 Harvest Lane, Maryville 37801.

Elaine Streno, Executive Director said, It is our turn to host! Although we do not usually operate as a pantry site, there was such a positive response to our last distribution that we want to invite the community to a third drive-thru distribution at our warehouse.

The event will be free to the public regardless of which county you live in. The food box will include enough food to feed a household of four for approximately five days. The food to be distributed includes canned salmon, chicken chili, various soups, peanut butter, canned vegetables, spaghetti sauce, pasta and juice.

Second Harvest Food Bank Of East Tennessee Receives $235000 Grant

Second Harvest Food Bank of East Tennessee was awarded a $235,000 grant from Publix Super Markets Charities in support of Hunger Action Month.

From Sept. 12 to Sept. 18, nearly 6,300 Publix associates across seven states will volunteer with 205 food banks, pantries and other nonprofit organizations focused on hunger relief for Hunger Action Month.

As a food retailer, we believe our greatest opportunity to give back is in helping to alleviate hunger, said Mike Skehan, district manager of Publix Super Markets. Locally, more than 90 Publix associates will be supporting Second Harvest Food Bank to ensure our neighbors are fed.

We truly appreciate Publix Super Markets Charities support of Second Harvest. Gifts like this are tremendously helpful to our mission of ending hunger in East Tennessee, said Elaine Streno, executive director of Second Harvest Food Bank.

What about the Fresh Pantry Program excites you most?

I am most excited about providing nutritious food to the most vulnerable people in our communities–the food insecure in food deserts. The reason Second Harvest started its Healthy Food Initiative was to develop better ways to serve the people in our communities. The Food Pantry Program takes our Healthy Food Initiative to the next level, which is what makes it so worthwhile. Hearing the stories of our clients and connecting with them on a personal level affirms what a great need exists in these food deserts. With the help of the Gretchen Swanson Center for Nutrition, we are excited to develop a plan on how to give our clients a voice within the community. We are also excited to watch how increased access to healthier foods and nutrition education through the Fresh Pantry can empower our clients to live healthier lifestyles. We want our clients to get excited again about family dinner time!

Biggest Most Successful Fundraiser In Second Harvest Food Banks History

Second Harvest Food Bank of East Tennessee is overwhelmed and grateful to share that donations from the 10th annual Double Your Donation Day, which took place Thursday, December 10, totaled $2,098,874.39.

The food bank received $500,000 in matching gifts from sponsors and anonymous individuals ahead of the day. Due to unbelievable support from the public, the initial match was met midday. Because East Tenn., is an incredible place, supporters and sponsors offered an additional $500,000 match allowing ALL donations up to $1,000,000 to be doubled. Second Harvest received more than $1,000,000 in donations and public support from the East Tenn. community.

In a year so heartbreaking and devastating as a whole, this years Double Your Donation Day will forever be remembered as a bright light of HOPE and overcoming, said Second Harvests Executive Director, Elaine Streno. Streno continued, Because of DYD , more than six million meals will land on the plates of your neighbors facing hunger in the 18 counties Second Harvest serves.

Due to the pandemic, more families than ever face hunger. Before the start of the pandemic, the number of people in East Tennessee experiencing food insecurity was 169,000. This means the number of people facing hunger has increased by nearly 30% in less than a year. Now in East Tennessee, nearly 240,000 people experience food insecurity.
