Pookys Pantry Partners With Second Harvest Food Bank Of Central Florida

Just in time for its 10th anniversary this month, Pookys Pantry has a new partner the Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida which will help stock the shelves to support Valencia College students and in need.

Now, the Student Development team, which manages Pookys Pantry, can view online what Second Harvest has available in its warehouse and order whats needed for our pantries at any time, at no cost to the College.

With this new partnership, instead of the previous limit of five items per day, students may now take up to 20 items from the pantry per day.

If you would like to donate to Pookys Pantry, there are three ways to donate:

Visit the Valencia College Foundation donations page and select Pookys Pantry Fund from the Designation dropdown menu.

Donate funds directly by visiting your business office and telling them you want to donate to Pookys Pantry.

Write a check made out to Valencia College Student Development with Pookys Pantry in the memo line and mail to:

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. As communities continue to recover from Hurricane Ian, Second Harvest Food Bank is working to make sure people dont go hungry.

The Hiromboli family says that flooding is the reason they landed in the Second Harvest food distribution line Tuesday.

The hurricane hit us and damaged a lot of things in the house, and were left without food, Hiromboli said.

The family says they only recently had the power at their home restored, but days without a working refrigerator and several inches of flood water inside meant all their food spoiled.

Its going to be a big help, Hiromboli said of the food distribution. We will see what they hand out to us so we can figure out what we need to buy later.

Second Harvest Food Pantry says demand for food help has risen consistently over the Summer.

Over the weekend, their food-finder website showed a spike in people looking for food.

We normally do about two distributions like this every day, Spence said. This week, were doing three, sometimes four of these types of mobile distributions.

What about the School Markets excites you most? What I love about the school markets is that they serve as a welcoming and stigma-free environment for students to access healthy foods. That stigma-free approach lowers so many barriers for students experiencing food insecurity, and is a meaningful strategy to address not just food insecurity, but nutrition security as well.

What will data collection entail over the next few months?As the school year is nearing the end, we are gearing up for our final post-survey evaluations at each of our schools. Our teachers and students will be responsible for making the survey available to all students at the school. Well compare our survey results in April to the survey results from our baseline assessment back at the beginning of the school year. Additionally, before the year ends well be doing focus groups with the Student Market managers who implemented our nutrition nudges in the market to get their feedback on the process of implementation, as well as their perceptions about the value and impact of the nudges. Finally, well do one-on-one interviews with the participating teachers to hear their perspective as well.

Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida is working to alleviate hunger in communities across Central Florida. Over the last 36 years, we have established a pipeline of food distribution programs and a broad network of strategic feeding partner agencies that spans six counties along with specific outreach activities and programs to support underserved and underrepresented communities in the region. Second Harvest Food Bank distributes food to over 550 nonprofit feeding programs

Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida goes through 2,120 gallons of diesel fuel per week to run its trucks across Central Florida for around 800 grocery pickups, according to Chief Development Officer Greg Higgerson. He says that amounts to $11,257 per week currently, a cost that has increased around 20 percent in recent weeks.

Ã¢For a nonprofit budget, that stretches it really, really far in terms of what weÃ¢re able to do,Ã¢ he explained.

On top of that, food prices are up and more people are needing help. Ã¢ItÃ¢s still a very high need and we expect that to continue to climb as prices go up, people are at that tipping point,Ã¢ Higgerson said.

For most of the pandemic, Second Harvest Food Bank distributed around 300,000 meals per day. A few months ago, that number settled to around 250,000, but Higgerson expects it to rise again over the next month.

Food Stamps: Floridians Await D

Floridians are waiting for federal relief after Hurricane Ian swept through the state at the end of September. While individual assistance has been declared, Disaster Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program has not yet been approved.

According to the Florida Policy Institute, SNAP usually assists after a disaster in three ways:

Replacement SNAP benefits
Supplemental SNAP benefits

SNAP households may receive replacement SNAP benefits for the amount of food that was reported lost or destroyed, as long as it does not exceed their monthly SNAP allotment.

Supplemental SNAP can also help Florida households, which is extra SNAP for those receiving benefits when the disaster happened that were not at the maximum amount for their household size. The Florida Policy Institute states that the USDA Food and Nutrition Service must approve supplemental SNAP.

CNN reported that the U.S. Department of Agriculture has approved waivers to allow SNAP recipients in affected counties to buy hot foods with their benefits through October, receive replacement benefits and access their October benefits early.

The agency is also applying for D-SNAP, a federal program that helps low-income households who lost food because of a disaster. However, the USDA said it typically takes a week before communities are ready for D-SNAP benefits because survivors are primarily focused on immediate needs during this time.

I worked offsite, so it was difficult to feel connected to the organization however, my supervisor would stop by and check-in. The pay rate could have been higher, but that is true of most nonprofit organizations.

a typical day there was fairly easy and face paced . great staff and great managers. i would usauly work where they package food for the school field trips.

I learn about process of load and unload of food, warehouse and driving forklift, walk behind, storage dry and frozen foods.

People is very kind and the managers show their interest for the workflow.

I learned a lot about networking here as well as how hard-work and collaboration can lead to amazing ideas. The culture here is very modern, forward-thinking and relaxed everyone is comfortable to share their opinions without the fear of being shot down or overpowered by others. Titles aren’t a controlling factor here since everyone is respected fairly, and treated fairly as well, because of this all opinions are weighed equally which sets Second Harvest apart from other non-profit organizations.
