Paritem Poonian 69 Of Tiburon Has Volunteered At The San Francisco

Poonian is among an army of thousands of volunteers who give their time to the San Francisco-Marin Food Bank volunteering to help the growing number of those in need.

Some 55,000 Marin and San Francisco households turn to the SFMFB each week, nearly twice as many as before the pandemic. In 2019 an estimated one in five San Francisco and Marin residents were already at risk for hunger, the Food Bank said.

ABOUT PETS ARE WONDERFUL SUPPORT FOOD BANK & BECOMING A VOLUNTEER:

The PAWS Pet Food Bank is the very first service provided by the PAWS program of Shanti Project and has been in operation since 1987.

The Food Bank provides PAWS clients with a supplemental allotment of pet food, litter and a variety of pet supplies every month. This basic but essential service can often mean the difference between our clients meeting their own nutritional needs and sacrificing their needs to feed their animal companions, or being able to keep their pets in their lives at all.

Many of our clients are unable to come to the Pet Food Bank due to their disability. We rely on the generosity and commitment of volunteers to deliver food and supplies to all of our homebound clients. Pet Food Bank volunteers are urgently needed during this period of the pandemic to ensure our community members and their pets receive these crucial supplies. Thats where you come in!

VOLUNTEER DUTIES:

• Deliver bags of pet food/supplies to 8-10 homebound clients in SF neighborhoods
• Delivery team consists of two people – you must choose your own rider anyone you feel comfortable with during COVID
• On the day of your shift, you will pick up the delivery routes and bags from the PAWS office, and deliver items to all the clients in that route
• Client address and contact information will be provided in each delivery route
• Shifts take around 2-3 hours to complete

SF-Marin Food BankThe Marin and San Francisco Food Banks merged in 2011 to become the SF-Marin Food Bank, which distributes enough food for more than 100,000 meals every day. During this time of year, the organization collects nearly half of its annual operating budget through donations and gathers thousands of pounds of non-perishable food.

Donate:You can drop off food donations at any of the locations listed in San Francisco or Marin. You can also host your own food drive.

Volunteer:either in Marin or San Francisco.

St. Anthony FoundationSt. Anthony’s Dining Room serves 2,400 meals every day of the year. It also provides a number of programs, including medical assistance and a free clothing program.

Donate:Food can be dropped off during weekdays. There are also ongoing donations needed.

Volunteer:Volunteer positions are available in the dining room and free clothing clinic, with a heavy demand around the holidays. They’re also in need of highly skilled volunteers in the technology lab and medical clinic.

Glide Memorial ChurchGlide’s mission is to welcome everyone into their community and help those in need. That happens through a number of programs, one of the biggest of which is a daily meal program that serves up breakfast, lunch and dinner .

Volunteers Needed At San Francisco Area Food Banks

SAN FRANCISCO, CA Food banks and pantries in San Francisco and other cities across the United States are in dire need of volunteers as the highly contagious omicron coronavirus variant continues to infect Americans.

Its an unfortunate challenge as many food pantries already struggle with increased need as well as the rising costs of food and other goods.

Food banks have experienced a 55 percent spike in usage through the pandemic, according to the latest Feeding America data, erasing a decades worth of progress toward ending hunger in the United States.

The volunteer shortage became apparent on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, when food banks across the country traditionally organize mass volunteer drives as part of a day of service, according to a report by The Associated Press. This year, many food banks canceled their plans or pressed on despite having dramatically fewer volunteers than before the pandemic.

Volunteers have always been a critical lifeline to food banks and food pantries, Kathryn Strickland, chief network officer at Feeding America, told Patch in a statement.

Prior to the pandemic, nearly 2 million volunteers provided more than 8.4 million hours of assistance across the Feeding America network. About half of Feeding Americas 200 food pantries have no paid staff and rely solely on volunteers.

At A Community Pantry

What: The Food Bank distributes food through a network of 450+ partners. These organizations, for example, schools, churches, and community centers, are located throughout San Francisco and Marin, aiming to provide accessibility to community members where they live or work. These partners are responsible for organizing, staffing, and leading their distribution. In general, our partners receive and distribute food on a weekly schedule, and some would benefit from a long-term volunteer.

Although the specifics vary by site, volunteers at these pantries help with set up, distribution, breakdown, and cleanup. Heavy lifting is often required. Speaking a second language is also often a benefit at these pantries. Learn more about our pantry network here.

Are you still holding volunteer shifts at the warehouses?

Yes. We still need the help of volunteers to keep distributing food to the community. To help protect the health of volunteers and staff, we have made significant changes to our volunteer program. Now, we are:

• Reducing the number of volunteers at each shift.

• Cutting non-essential projects. Only critical volunteer projects will continue. For example, packing senior boxes and grocery bags for delivery to homebound neighbors.

• Conducting shifts outside, when possible.

• Asking volunteers to maintain a healthy distance from one another.

All other best practices cleaning surfaces regularly, providing hand sanitizer, wearing gloves, and making masks available still apply.

Why haven’t you stopped volunteer operations during this time?

At this time, the Food Bank is still fully operational. As indicated in the new public health order that requires residents to stay home except for essential needs, food banks are an essential service similar to a grocery store. Now, more than ever, our continued efforts will be critical to ensure that our most vulnerable neighbors get access to the food they need to weather the pandemic.

We cant provide food without volunteers. We have made significant changes to our volunteer program to help protect the health of our staff and volunteers.

How do you keep your volunteers safe?

If volunteers or staff arrive who are sick, we are requesting they go home until they are well.

Volunteer duties can include boxing and sorting food at the Concord and Fairfield warehouse locations, assisting with senior food distribution programs and helping to distribute produce in a variety of communities. The food bank is taking extra safety precautions to protect the health and safety of its volunteers and employees, including a symptom-free sign-in sheet, social distancing, required face coverings, frequent hand washing and provided disposable gloves for safe food handling.

Its not often that a tech company and a nonprofit have goals that are so closely aligned.

Afresh Technologies, Inc., is a San Francisco-based software publisher whose use of artificial intelligence enables grocery retailers to meet customers demand for produce.

Similarly, the San Francisco-Marin Food Bank is trying to satisfy the basic human need for nourishment, despite a dearth of volunteers to deliver the goods.

So it made sense that Afresh teamed up with the food bank and in November began offering its employees to work on the front lines handing out free staples to hungry families.

Its not peanut butter and baking mix, said Afreshs marketing coordinator Katherine Harris of the bounty, most of which is fresh produce. Its high-quality fresh vegetables and proteins. There are kiwis, oranges, celery and a lot of bananas its beautiful like really healthy, nourishing food.

The groceries also include basics such as rice, potatoes, chicken, tuna and eggs, ingredients that appeal to cultures as diverse as the languages needed to communicate with the families that flock to the giveaways Russian, Tagalog and Korean as well as Cantonese and Spanish, said Cody Jang, associate director of community engagement at San Francisco-Marin Food Bank.

Please join us for our March social event at the San Francisco Food Bank. Volunteers are welcome to have no-host dinner at Goat Hill Pizza after the volunteer shift.

ATTIRE:Closed-toe shoes are required at all volunteer projects. Anyone wearing sandals, flip-flops, or any other shoe with an open toe will not be able to participate in the project.Because you’ll be helping to repack food, please wear casual and clean clothing, long pants, securely fastened jewelry, and comfortable shoes.We suggest dressing in layers, as the temperature in the warehouse is often cool.PARKING INFORMATION:Please utilize available free street parking in front of our building so that our agency shoppers can use our parking lot to load their vehicles.WHERE TO REPORT:We ask all volunteers to sign in upon arrival. As of September 2021, nearly 80 percent of Feeding America food banks were accepting new volunteers, according to the organization. Heres a sampling of the jobs you might do:

• Keep pantry shelves stocked and assemble food boxes for pickup.

The Food Pantry

Every Saturday from 12pm – 2pm, we feed local families with our farmers’ market-style distribution center in the Upper-Haight neighborhood of San Francisco
