Pantry Distributes More Than 14000 Meals To Families All Over La
When it became clear that the COVID-19 pandemic was going to severely impact the San Fernando Valley, resulting in a health emergency and economic repercussions, the Mission sprang into action. Just days after the idea was formulated, a pop-up pantry at the Northridge Fashion Center was launched.
The pantry, a collaboration between the mission, Harbor Recuperative Care, District 12 Los Angeles City Councilmember John Lee, the Valley Food Bank, and other partners, provided 14,696 meals to the local community in its two months of two-day-a-week operations.
Thank you so much for the groceries today, said one grocery recipient. While all the items provided were greatly appreciated, the kids were delighted with the bread, peanut butter, juice, and the snacks. It was nice to see the smiles and pure joy on their faces when they opened the bag. These groceries are a lifesaver and will keep our family fed for a few days. Everyone right from the volunteers who emailed us to those who helped load the bags at the pop-up pantry site were very polite and made us feel welcome. Thanks a ton for the selfless service and for helping us during these tough times. God bless.
As businesses started reopening in early June, specifically the Northridge Fashion Center, the pop-up pantry wrapped up its run. In the end, 7,348 people across 44 cities were served. And the pantry received 36,740 pounds of foodor 18 tonsof food donations.
Scaling Up Food Distribution During The Pandemic
At the request of Los Angeles City Council, we adjusted our weekly food pantry to a drive-through operation to adhere to Social Distancing Guidance and protect our community, staff, and volunteers from COVID-19.
NVCS Food Pantry served an average of over 5,000 households from 118 zip codes monthly, with a record number of 10,000 households served in May. We have partnered with organizations to reach other at-risk communities by working closely with case workers, Los Angeles Council Districts 6 & 7, the United States Marine Corps, and the Los Angeles Police Department to deliver groceries to shut-ins, veterans living on their own, and the elderly.

The women of St Luke’s Lutheran Church of Woodland Hills made two boxes of knitted ear muffs for our unhoused clients.
The National Notary Association provided a donation of food and money to the Pantry after Thanksgiving.
BASE Training and Physical Therapy donated food and a monetary donation to the Pantry this November.
The West Valley Food Pantry feeds the hungry in our community and offers services to those in need.

The event is one of eleven being held nationwide by the nonprofit, 911 Day, in locations that include Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, New York, Phoenix, St. Louis, and Washington, DC.
Founded 19 years ago, 9/11 Day annually organizes the September 11 National Day of Service and Remembrance as a tribute to those killed and injured in the terrorist attacks 20 years ago as well for those who responded and helped others during the tragedy.
Food insecurity has been an issue in the L.A. region for many years and grown exponentially during the pandemic, according to David May, Regional Food Bank spokesperson.
Before COVID, we were serving about 300,000 people per month. Now we serve about 900,000, May said.
That figure represents approximately 10 percent of the Los Angeles County population. While some sense of normalcy may return as the economy recovers, May said that many families rely on food assistance to put food on their tables.
Helping families and individuals to commemorate the 9/11 anniversary is encouraging for Wheeler. We are excited to turn a day of tragedy into something good, she said.

Saturday, September 20th the Pantry was honored by Grocery Outlet . The community and Grocery Outlet raised $6,529 for the Pantry and honored us with the first ever Community Partnership award.
Nvcs Awarded 2020 California Nonprofit Of The Year
As we reflect on the work that took place during the past year we also celebrate the fact that NVCS is very much a community of stakeholders that consider ourselves members of a larger family. We are humbled and inspired to be playing such a vital role during the COVID-19 pandemic.
In March of this year it was affirmed that our NVCS team are Essential Workers that our community depend upon for basic human services. Time and time again our staff and volunteers have answered the call. During this historically stressful time, they have selflessly and tirelessly devoted themselves to serving the most vulnerable in our community.
With that said, we once again served more families and individuals than ever before, we benefited from more people investing their time in serving our community, and we expanded our partnerships all across the San Fernando Valley.
Thank you to California State Assemblymember Adrin Nazarian for nominating NVCS as a 2020 California Nonprofit of the Year. An incredible honor from CalNonprofits recognizing the hard work of our staff and volunteers during this challenging year.

Food Banks acquire large donations of edible but unmarketable food from the food industry and distribute it to organizations that feed hungry people. Then they provide this food to family in a need.

Additional Free Food Assistance In Los Angeles City And County
For the locations of additional food pantries near you, soup kitchens and distribution centers in Los Angeles County, call 234-3030. Dozens of other churches, non-profits centers, and charities provide assistance to those who need it. There are also government programs including USDA free school lunches and breakfast, food stamps, Meals on Wheels for the homebound in Los Angeles and other support.
Volunteer At Valley Food Bank
Volunteers provide up to 75% of the labor needed to run the program. Valley Food Bank volunteers come from many different backgrounds and vocations. They consist of single individuals, married couples, and groups from churches, schools, or businesses. Youth groups often commit a few hours a day, depending on the circumstances. Individuals needing to fulfill community service hours are also welcome. No special skills are necessary for Valley Food Bank volunteers.
All volunteers receive hands-on training in food safety and handling and how to properly inspect, tag, and store food. Assignments may vary, depending on a volunteers physical abilities to perform them. Volunteers process and store the donated food items for later distribution. Spoilage is discarded and suitable items are inventoried and properly stored for later distribution. Participating charities include churches, soup kitchens, food pantries, and homeless service providers.
These charities in turn provide food baskets and/or hot nutritious meals to the poor, the elderly, and the homeless throughout the San Fernando Valley. All pantries must meet specific food handling, safety, and storage criteria in order to be a recipient, and undergo periodic facility audits by the food bank to ensure compliance with food industry safety standards.
Opportunities are on-going, year-round, and constantly changing, there is a place for everyone with time to give.
