Before retiring, Charles Minniear worked as a safe and vault technician for the federal government, changing lock combinations to secure assets of U.S. troops.
This summer hes been working on a different puzzle: helping his wife, Jeanne, heal from a knee replacement surgery while cooking, tending to their home and trying to stretch their dollars at the grocery store.
Shes got the pain, but I got all the work, said Minniear, who turned 86 a few weeks ago and lives in Vista. On the brochure of the care of the patient and things like that, they dont say youve got to do the laundry, youve got to do the cooking.
He has also been worrying about paying for food, car insurance and other bills on his $26,000 yearly post-tax income. That is roughly a fifth of the $120,000 he was earning before retiring and, with annual inflation at 8.5 percent in July, it feels even more meager in this economy. Minniears coffee of choice, decaf Folgers, costs almost double what it did this winter, he said.
A few days ago he visited the new pantry of the North County Food Bank, a chapter of the Jacobs & Cushman San Diego Food Bank, and left with two bags of groceries.
He was a regular at the food banks drive-through distribution center, where volunteers load goods like pasta and bags of produce into peoples cars. But as much as he appreciates that food, sometimes those pre-assembled packages have things he cant stomach. Like cucumbers.

Enhancing Our Services And Community Impact With A Larger Facility
The North County Food Bank, which was acquired by the Jacobs & Cushman San Diego Food Bank in 2015 to expand our hunger-relief services throughout the North County region, started in a 5,000-square-foot warehouse in San Marcos.
In late 2019, the Food Bank moved to a 35,000-square-foot facility in Vista right before the start of the pandemic and now, is moving a second time nearly doubling the size of our operational space.
Much of this growth, especially over the last three years, is a testament to the increased need for emergency food assistance among residents as a result of the pandemic and the amount of incredible support the North County Food Bank has received and is currently receiving from donors, volunteers and community supporters.
Operations to Remain the Same with Opportunities for Further ExpansionThe North County Food Bank chapter will continue to serve as the Food Banks staging site for our Diaper Bank Program and our newly instituted, Period Supply Program. The Jacobs & Cushman San Diego Food Bank and our North County Food Bank chapter have the only registered Diaper Bank Program in San Diego County through the National Diaper Bank Network.
Scare Away Hunger Peanut Butter Drive

During the month of October, businesses and organizations across the North County region are coming together to help Scare Away Hunger by collecting jars of peanut butter for local children and families in need.
Why Peanut Butter?
Peanut butter is an excellent source of protein for children and families. It is popular with kids. Its shelf-stable, and one jar can provide more than 12 sandwiches.
Peanut butter is very expensive for the Food Bank to purchase. That is why this years peanut butter food drive will be instrumental in helping stock the Food Banks shelves with this nutrient-rich superfood for local families in need.

North County Food Bank Expands Services With Newly Leased Vista Warehouse
The North County Food Bank marked its third month of operations in its newly-leased 30,000-square-foot warehouse distribution center in Vista.
The move to the food banks new home completes the second phase of the organizations North County Hunger Initiative an aggressive plan established by Food Bank officials to double the amount of food and resources the nonprofit distributes to underserved individuals and families throughout the region.
Our North County expansion began in October 2015 when the Jacobs & Cushman San Diego Food Bank acquired the North County Food Bank. The acquisition has enabled both food banks to meet previously unmet need in North County, and it expanded the food banks network of nonprofit distribution partners to more than 500. With additional resources from the acquisition, the North County Food Bank is now serving 30,000 more people every month in communities throughout North County, said James Floros, CEO of the San Diego Food Bank and North County Food Bank.
The North County Food Banks newly leased facility in Vista is 30,000 sq. ft. and has multiple loading docks to safely accommodate nonprofit partners, who pick up food from the warehouse.
We are very excited about our move to Vista. We were operating in a very small facility in San Marcos that could not accommodate the sheer volume of food that we need to receive and distribute to those in need across the North County region, said Floros.
