Who Can Set Up A Virtual Food Drive
Anyone can host a Virtual Food Drive. Many of our corporate and foundation partners create customized Virtual Food Drives that incorporate their logo and conduct competitions between departments.
Some individual donors go the extra mile by using our Virtual Food Drive tool to create their own fundraising events around special occasions such as birthdays, weddings, bar or bat mitzvahs.
All you have to do is let us know your preferred food drive dates, a fundraising goal, and if you would like to include a logo and/or image in the store front sign, and we will set up your customized page. Once we provide you with the link, share it with co-workers, subscribers, friends and family to help you reach it your goal!

Ending Hunger Through Food Rescue
35 percent of food produced in the United States goes to waste. That means there is more than enough food available to end hunger. By partnering with over 600 food donors in San Diego County and over 225 farms and packing sheds throughout California, Feeding San Diego rescues high-quality food before it goes to waste.
In 2021-2022, nearly 70 percent of the food we provided to the community was rescued.
By diverting this food from the landfill, Feeding San Diego significantly reduces harmful greenhouse gas emissions. Learn more about Our Impact.
In addition to rescuing and distributing high-quality food, Feeding San Diego helps individuals enroll in CalFresh . This program helps those in need purchase groceries for their families.

Creating An Optimized Program With Volunteerhub
The Jacobs & Cushman San Diego Food Bank has been using VolunteerHub to optimize its volunteer program since 2009. As an earlier adapter of VolunteerHub, the San Diego Food Bank has been able to capture and leverage volunteer data for many years, creating an organized volunteer program with the ability to drive growth and reach program goals.
The Food Bank uses many of VolunteerHub s volunteer management features including recruitment, registration , reporting, and communication capabilities.
Some of the most valuable feature sets of VolunteerHub that align with the Food Banks goals are the ability to communicate with groups of volunteers via corporate partnerships, the access to volunteer program trends via reporting, and the ability for volunteers to create profiles and self-register when and wherever they want via an internet connection.
The Jacobs & Cushman San Diego Food Bank also has high hopes for how they will use VolunteerHub in the future to continuously optimize the organizations volunteer program. These ambitions and optimizations of the future include integrating volunteer and donor data, enhancing communication, and fundraising.
The backend features and support team are another component of VolunteerHub that the food bank leverages to keep the volunteer program growing and organized. VolunteerHub allows The San Diego Food Bank to access the data they need, whenever and wherever they need it.
Why Use The Virtual Food Drive

The answer is simple to get more food to those facing hunger in our community faster. By holding your food drive online, you will save the Food Bank the time and resources incurred through a physical food drive. Plus, your donations will help us purchase more of our most-needed food items in bulk such as canned meats, canned vegetables, canned fruits, peanut butter, oatmeal and cereal.

Inspired By The Starfish Story
One day a man was walking along the beach when he noticed a boy hurriedly picking up and gently throwing things into the ocean.
Approaching the boy, he asked, Young man, what are you doing?
The boy replied, Throwing starfish back into the ocean. The surf is up and the tide is going out. If I dont throw them back, theyll die.
The man laughed to himself and said, Dont you realize there are miles and miles of beach and hundreds of starfish? You cant make any difference!
After listening politely, the boy bent down, picked up another starfish, and threw it into the surf. Then, smiling at the man, he said, I made a difference to that one.
Loren Eiseley
We all have the power to create positive change in the world, yet sometimes it can feel overwhelming, especially when the goal is to help end hunger through food rescue. The Starfish Story is a reminder that each and every life we touch matters. All actions, big or small, make a difference.
