Volunteers Of All Ages Welcome

SAN ANTONIO The San Antonio Food Bank is sending out a plea for volunteers, calling it an urgent crisis.

Its a bit of a collision: a combination of volunteer fatigue and businesses opening up coupled with as many as 250,000 kids being at risk for hunger this summer. Summer is traditionally our highest time of need and were usually in great shape with volunteers for the summer. The pandemic, however, has changed the landscape for volunteers and we are in a serious crisis, said Eric Cooper, President/CEO of the San Antonio Food Bank in a press release.

Volunteers are needed to prepare meals in the food banks three kitchens, as well as to pack food boxes at the warehouse and work mobile food distributions.

Volunteers must be 15 years or older to volunteer at the Haven for Hope Kitchen and 16 years old at the SA Food Bank Community Kitchen. There are other opportunities for volunteers of all ages, but volunteers younger than 16 must be accompanied by an adult.

Information on dates, time, age restrictions, and more can be found at the Food Banks volunteer website.

There are even full-time service opportunities available through the Food Banks partnership with AmeriCorps and Equal Heart. AmeriCorps Members receive a bi-weekly living allowance and an end-of-term education award. Application information can be found online.

The Last Sonatas, Beethoven And Composing For The Ages

Since its inception in 1980, the San Antonio Food Bank has been a major force in the fight against hunger in the San Antonio community. As a member of the Feeding America national coalition of food banks, the San Antonio Food Bank serves as a regional hub for food distribution to 200 partner food pantries scattered throughout Bexar and 15 surrounding counties in Southwest Texas. In 2020 alone, it collected and distributed 80 million pounds of food, providing meals to 120,000 individuals each week. To provide such a large degree of food assistance, the Food Bank requires the help of more than 100 volunteers each day to sort, package, and distribute the donated food items. Many of these volunteers participate as organized church groups who regularly assist the work of the Food Bank.

ACTS Core of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church is currently reviewing ways to better advance the Adoration, Community, Theology, and Service missions of the ACTS movement within the St. Francis community. As part of the Service mission, ACTS Core is organizing groups of St. Francis volunteers to assist in the vital work provided by the San Antonio Food Bank.

In 2021, St. Francis parishioners participated in a total of 36 San Antonio Food Bank volunteer sessions. Working with other volunteers present during those sessions, we created over 100,000 meals for the San Antonio community.

SAN ANTONIO The San Antonio Food Bank is asking the community to help sign up for volunteer shifts throughout the summer to keep up with the demand for food assistance.

Volunteering has so many wins: proven health benefits for the individual when the service is given altruistically helps the Food Bank be incredibly efficient in meeting the need and builds community amongst neighbors who might not otherwise work next to each other. Join us and reap the benefits, said Eric S. Cooper President & CEO for San Antonio Food Bank.

The San Antonio Food Banks volunteer opportunities range from being in the sorting room, warehouse, garden, farm areas, community kitchen, and even at the off-site community kitchen at Haven for Hope.

Food Banks In San Antonio And New Braunfels In Need Of Volunteers

More Videos

NEW BRAUNFELS, Texas Food Banks in San Antonio and New Braunfels have been struggling to keep up with increasing demand. Not because of a lack of generosity, but a lack of volunteers.

You might not be seeing me as much, Alex Davis explained to Food Bank President and CEO Eric Cooper Wednesday Morning.

Davis had been volunteering at the New Braunfels Food Bank for over two years, but his new job with H-E-B means he’ll have to cut back. Cooper considers this a success.

It’s a relationship and seeing that relationship progress and evolve, Cooper said. It brings joy, but there is this struggle, right? because we need the help.

It does come at a rough time though. Cooper says both the New Braunfels and San Antonio Food Banks have been short on volunteers recently.

“It’s the volunteerism that we’re really lacking at this time, he said. We just have shifts that take 50 people, and only 10 register.”

Part of that is because of an expected lull that comes around this time of year.

“Because of vacations and all the distractions that happen during the summer, we actually see less volunteers at a time when it’s the busiest demand, Cooper said.

But, he says inflation and supply issues have increased both the need in the community and the strain on their system.

“Typically, we’ve been feeding about 90 thousand people a week, Cooper said. That number today is over 100 thousand people a week.”

San Antonio Food Bank Makes Plea For Volunteers

Without additional volunteers, the food bank may have to cut back its food distributions

The San Antonio Food Bank needs your help.

The nonprofit put the call out this week as it faced the possibility of having to scale back some of its food distributions because of a shortage of volunteers.

Our great community is rightfully cautious about getting out at the moment, given the spike in local cases. But the pandemic continues to wreak havoc on our economic stability as a community and food needs continue to be at all-time high levels, said Eric Cooper, president and CEO.

Since March, the San Antonio Food Bank has been providing food to about 120,000 individuals each weekdouble what was typical before COVID-19.

To sort and distribute that foodboth at the food bank and at mega distribution events at places like Traders Village and Toyota Fieldthe food bank relies on about 400 volunteers each week. This week and for the next several weeks, only around 100 individuals have registered to help.

Mayor Ron Nirenberg shared the plea for help on social media, saying that hed volunteered at a mega distribution in past weeks and that he plans to return to help again. Please sign up for a shift to help our neighbors in need, he wrote.

Cooper said some volunteers need to stay home for health reasons so theyre urging those who are healthy and not at high risk to give of their time.

Sign up to volunteer at safoodbank.org.

‘grateful That Im Able To Do This’: Food Bank Volunteer Looks Forward To Serving Community During Holiday Season

SAN ANTONIO â Tony Ferrao is what you call an apple corps volunteer, doing whatever needs to be done at the San Antonio Food Bank.

âGotta keep fit and grateful that Iâm able to do this,â Ferrao said. âWeâre here about four days a week. Monday through Thursday. Come here pretty much every day if we can.â

Answering the call to assist with food distributions, Ferrao and his wife started volunteering in May. At 69 the Air Force retiree makes the most of his time.

âI love the city and the people,â Ferrao said. âJust the feeling of caring and giving. Thatâs what drew me here.â

The food bank serves 120,000 people each week. Volunteers sort, pack and distribute food to those in need, making sure families have fresh food, especially around the holidays.

âDuring the holidays you have less people who are willing to volunteer,â James Douglas, Cole High School senior said, while volunteering. âItâs just really important that even though weâre going out to celebrate, we also make sure that weâre impacting people in a great way.â

Texas ranks second in the nation for food insecurity. The food bank says nearly half of its clients work and still canât afford food.

âSometimes the people who need help the most arenât overseas or far away,â David Palazzola, an Air Force volunteer said. âSometimes they are right here, right at home.â

Jul 8, 2020 | Announcements

The San Antonio Food Bank needs volunteers. Due to COVID-19 cases and the way that the disease continues to spread, the San Antonio Food Bank is serving more people than normal. Many people around San Antonio, Texas, and the world have been negatively affected by the global pandemic.

The food bank needs 400 volunteers per week to serve those in need during the pandemic. However, they currently only have about 100 people that have signed up to volunteer this week and in the weeks to come. You can register to volunteer at the food bank by signing up at

Food Bank CEO Eric Cooper explains that the lack of people volunteering to assist the food bank could result in some food distribution events being postponed or even canceled. Its also possible that the events that do not have to be postponed or canceled will probably see longer lines with slower distribution rates for clients due to the lack of manpower to help assist.

The only requirement for registering to help the food bank in San Antonio is to be 18 years of age or older. Register online at to give the food bank all the help they need.
