Tips For Individual Volunteers

• Use the online registration portal for individual volunteer appointments only.
• The registration page allows you to create a username and password to view open volunteer dates and times.
• When you have successfully created a volunteer appointment, you will receive an email confirming your visit. If you do not receive an email, your appointment or change has not taken effect.
• Returning volunteers may login and create new volunteer appointments using their login credentials.
• Teens 16 years and older may volunteer without a parent/guardian . However, they may not supervise other children/teens while volunteering. An adult must accompany children/teens younger than 16.

All of us need help sometimes. Do you need help with food? Roadrunner® Food Bank of New Mexico is here to help.

Please use our food assistance line or online food finder to receive help from Roadrunner Food Bank and our network of member partners across New Mexico. As the states largest food bank, we serve as a distribution center and provide food to about 500 partner agencies across the state, which includes food pantries, soup kitchens, shelters, schools, senior sites and even healthcare clinic. There is help available in your community.

The Ease Of The Program

The program is set up in a farmers market-style distribution and eliminates the need for large-capacity or long-term storage for our member partners. Mobile Food Pantry distributions are completed in approximately 2 hours and are typically held once a month at more than 100 sites across New Mexico. The program provides a household with 50 pounds of food half of which are perishable food items like fresh fruits and vegetables. The program also improves access to nutritious and healthy food in underserved rural areas.

How Food Banks Work

Food banks are nonprofit organizations that source, acquire and distribute food to the hungry. As the name implies, we bank food and store it in a distribution center or warehouse. Smaller charitable organizations receive food from us through our fleet of semi-trucks. These smaller hunger relief partners have a variety of distribution dates and times when hungry community members visit. This statewide hunger relief network brings important sources of healthy and nutritious food to tens of thousands of people in both rural and urban communities every week of the year.

Roadrunner Food Bank Searching For Help With Annual Event

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. A local food bank is asking for a helping hand. Roadrunner Food Bank is searching for volunteers to help sort food during their annual Fall Letter Carriers Food Drive.

The organization, in partnership with the U.S. Postal Service Letter Carriers Union, will collect food at 11 post offices and in peoples mailboxes.

Volunteers and staff sort the food donations on the dock before sending them to the food bank.

The food drive is taking place throughout the week of November 14, and sorting will happen Saturday, November 19.

Throughout the year, Roadrunner Food Bank captures millions of pounds of food to distribute in communities throughout New Mexico for the benefit of our hungry neighbors. Based on the past couple of years, and through the pandemic, things have gotten worse in New Mexico and not better with regard to hunger, Pacheco said. So were just trying to put something together that brings New Mexico businesses, those that are providing handcrafted beverages and those that support the beverages, to help give back to our community.

According to Hunger In America Report statistics, 90% of hungry households have an annual income of less than $20,000 a year and the rest report having no income at all. About 60% of hungry households reported choosing between paying for medicine or medical care and food in the last year.

In its fifth year, the Tap into New Mexico Craft program directly supports the needs of New Mexico hungry families through Roadrunner Food Bank, Pacheco states in the news release. This is a month during the year when a New Mexico craft winery, distillery and brewery along with our distributor, partner together to help fight food insecurity. As a New Mexico company, we believe it is our responsibility to lift up and support our local community as our local community supports our brands throughout the year. What We Aim To Solve

Roadrunner is seeing unprecedented demand across New Mexico, not only from people living with food insecurity every day, but also from families that are newly in need. New Mexico has historically had challenges with food insecurity and the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in mid-March 2020 has only intensified those needs. According to preliminary research and data from Feeding Americas The Impact of the Coronavirus on Local Food Insecurity report, pre-COVID, 1 in 6 people in New Mexico were food insecure now its projected to be 1 in 5. In fact, 23 counties have overall hunger rates of more than 20%. And for New Mexicos children, its much worse. Pre-COVID, 1 in 4 kids were food insecure, now its projected to be 1 in 3. In fact, 8 counties have childhood hunger rates of more than 40% and an additional 18 counties have childhood hunger rates of more than 30%.

Tips For Bringing Groups With Children And Teens To Volunteer

• Children eight years old and up may volunteer with the appropriate number of adults chaperoning them.
• 8-10 years of age must have 1 adult chaperone per 3 children.
• 11-15 years of age must have 1 adult chaperone per every 4 teens.
• 16-18 years of age may volunteer without an adult as individual volunteers, unless it is part of a school or organization activity . Teens ages 16-18 years of age may not supervise children/teens under 18 during the volunteer activity.
• Roadrunner can host 10 children per shift ages 8-10 with 1 adult per 3 children escorting them. Our warehouse staff can host up to 10 children/teens ages 11-18 with 1 adult per 4 children/teens escorting them. We reserve the right to turn your group away if the requested ratio of adults to children requested is not provided.

Tips For Group Volunteers

• Complete the Group Request Form found here for groups of two or more one week prior to your requested date/time. Provide as many details as possible.
• We can accommodate both small and large groups per volunteer shift.
• We will get in touch with you to let you know if that date and time is available. If it isnt available, we will work with you to make plans that work for everyone.
• After we have confirmed your group volunteer date and time, you will receive a group reservation email to provide to each member of your group.

Roadrunner® Food Bank of New Mexico, a Feeding America member, is the largest non-profit dedicated to solving food insecurity in New Mexico. As a food distribution hub, Roadrunner provides food to hundreds of affiliated member partners around the state including food pantries, soup kitchens, shelters and regional food banks. Please also complete this short questionnaire regarding your needs and intentions. Once the form is submitted, our staff will review it and get back to you within a few weeks. Please note, this is not the official application or agreement of partnership. It simply helps us understand your current food assistance program or your intentions to start one.

Keep in mind, we are seeking partners who are committed to serving their community year-round. As the site host and sponsor, youll be asked to:

• Coordinate dates and logistics of your anticipated Mobile Food Pantry delivery with Roadrunner Food Bank staff.
• Select a site with good parking and accessibility for a tractor-trailer or semi truck.
• Organize the location, volunteers, and tables to facilitate food distribution.
• Spread the word within the community about the scheduled delivery.
• The Mobile Food Pantry will deliver food directly to the distribution site.

Reminders For Our Volunteers

• Shoes must be closed-toe and closed-heel and offer protection against hazards.
• Shirts must have sleeves over the shoulder .
• Shorts or skirts must be mid-length or mid-thigh.
• Purses, backpacks, bags, and other personal belongings should be left at home.

Fewer donations are coming into New Mexico’s largest food bank, while the number of families needing help remains high.

Each Tuesday morning at Expo New Mexico, hundreds of cars line up.

“Everything is expensive. They help us a lot,” Ana Cirrillo said.

The Roadrunner Food bank offers up to 400 households free food. The number fluctuates each week depending on what goods the non-profit has.

Cirrillo said there are nine people in her family. Some of them are teenagers.

“They love to eat, oh yeah, they eat a lot,” Cirrillo said.

Because of inflation, she now pays around $800 a month for groceries.

“As a mom, I have to make sure my kid has food,” Robin Shepherd said.

Shepherd added it hasn’t been easy for her family as prices keep climbing.

“Even the stuff we’ve been getting from here is going down and down because not as many people are donating,” Shepherd said.
