Diane Grimes, a specialist at the food bank, places orders for those who dont have an internet connection or the ability to navigate online. When she and Christian Axford, a coordinator with the OrderAhead program, are out in the community distributing food, they tell others about the new pickup option.
The easiest way to explain it is to say its just like Food Lion or Walmarts pickup, Axford said. Everyone is extremely grateful that were doing this.
Mahogany Richardson of Spotsylvania certainly was glad she didnt have to get her newborn out the car, especially as a few sprinkles of rain started to fall on Tuesday. I think this is really great for anybody who is in need of help.
Carlin Venaglia, also of Spotsylvania, has been picking up food for two neighborsa disabled man and an older womanfor about six years. Hes always concerned about them having a well-balanced diet and getting the kind of food they like, so the OrderAhead program filled both those needs.

Fredericksburg Regional Food Bank Announces New Orderahead Program
Admin
OrderAhead enables people facing food insecurity to order food online, select a convenient time, and pick it up directly from either the FRFB warehouse or Love Thy Neighbor Pantry in King George. The program expands access to emergency food resources through a discreet and convenient click-and-collect grocery ordering system that reduces the physical and social barriers that often come with food assistance. OrderAhead will be more neighbor-centric by offering a choice in foods received, offering options about times when the services can be received, and providing specialized dietary options to support some nutritionally affected health conditions. By offering privacy, choice, and scheduling convenience, OrderAhead creates a dignified experience for people seeking food assistance.
One goal of the Order Ahead program is to mitigate the drive-through distributions by allowing our neighbors to receive quality, nutritious food on a schedule that may be more convenient, less stressful, and more discreet.
Since the pandemic began, we have watched our neighbors waiting in line for hours at our distributions. OrderAhead simplifies the process of receiving food assistance, said Carey Sealy, Food Sourcing & Inventory Manager at the Fredericksburg Regional Food Bank.
For more information on OrderAhead, go to orderahead.org or call 371-7666 x 146.
About Fredericksburg Regional Food Bank
Channel One Regional Food Bank Launches Orderahead
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Email:
Over the past year, many of our neighbors faced a difficult realization: for the first time, they were not able to afford food for themselves or their families, as layoffs and business closures interrupted the incomes of many people in America.
Nationally, food banks are serving 55 percent more people now than before the pandemic. To provide more meals to our neighbors in need who may have challenges accessing food through traditional distribution methods, Channel One Regional Food Bank is using OrderAhead to help connect more people to food.
OrderAhead was created by Feeding America®, a nationwide network of food banks, to help neighbors facing hunger order food from a food bank or community partner and pick it up at convenient locations, like schools, drive-through distributions, and libraries. Home delivery is also an option. This program expands access to charitable food through a private, discreet and convenient click and collect grocery ordering system that reduces the physical and social barriers encountered by our neighbors facing food insecurity.
Our 14-county region has faced numerous challenges this past year and we have worked hard to serve our neighbors in their time of need, said Virginia Merritt, executive director at Channel One, The OrderAhead program will help to remove barriers to connecting more people facing hunger to nutritious food.

Nikia Mercer placed her order for groceries online, then pulled into a designated parking space when it was time to pick them up.
She stayed in her vehicle while someone brought the food out to her and was able to get the selections she wanted without masking up and being in contact with other people. Thats a particular blessing with all this mess going around, said Mercer, who lives in Fredericksburg.
This program is awesome. It has helped me tremendously, she said.
Mercer didnt visit a local grocery store for the bread and meat, canned goods and fresh vegetables. She got it all through the Fredericksburg Regional Food Bank, which is one of only two food banks in Virginia and 11 nationwide offering the same kind of grocery pickup as popular supermarkets.
