Unfortunately, during each season, a significant portion of the crop is lost due to countless crop production challenges. Much of the damage is superficial, often pushing vegetable crops into the dumpster and apples into the cider bin.

Yet, there is another option that many of our growers have chosen to take so as to utilize this imperfect food. The distribution of blemished, yet high quality crops can be gleaned to support over 40,000 people in need of food assistance each week within the greater Hudson Valley Region.

Hudson Valley Food Bank To Have New Home In Montgomery

MONTGOMERY A federal CARE act grant of $10.7 million has been awarded to construct a new Hudson Valley Food Bank distribution warehouse in the Town and Village of Montgomery. Additional funding includes $1.9 million from the Food Bank of the Hudson and close to $800,000 in private donations.

The new facility will replace an older one in Cornwall-on-Hudson.

Molly Nicol, CEO of the Regional Food Bank of Northeastern New York and the Food Bank of the Hudson Valley, said the need to provide assistance is more important than ever.

As a result of the pandemic and subsequent economic fallout, the need for food assistance grew by 20 percent. With inflation over eight percent this need is not abating, she said. So, now we distribute over 20 million pounds of food in the six counties of the Lower Hudson Valley. It used to be more than 15, so that is how much it has grown over time. We district that good to over 179,000 people in this community.

Montgomery Town Supervisor Brian Maher said the town has been working with the food bank for two years to do our best to ensure this facility would be built in the Town of Montgomery.

The Food Bank of the Hudson Valley distributes food donations to 400 member agencies in Orange, Ulster, Dutchess, Sullivan and Putnam counties.

Its just a rendering now, but Molly Nichol, CEO of the Regional Food Bank of Northeastern New York, expects to see the Food Bank of the Hudson Valleys new 40,000-square-foot warehouse up and running in the town of Montgomery very soon. As a tireless advocate for those who struggle with food insecurity, Nichol has been working with the town Planning Board for nearly two years in anticipation of receiving state and federal grants.

Governor Kathy Hochul recently announced a $10.7 million award for the new building. An additional $1.9 million contribution to the Food Bank and $800,000 in private donations will be added to the grant and will help defray the cost of the six acres of land the new warehouse will be built on.

Food Bank of the Hudson Valley was established in 1990 to better serve the mid-Hudson region and has been operating out of a donated warehouse in Cornwall-on-Hudson since 1996. It collects and distributes food in Dutchess, Orange, Putnam, Rockland, Sullivan and Ulster counties for nearly 180,000 people in the Hudson Valley region who depend on local food pantries or faith-based organizations to help feed themselves and their families.

Food Bank of the Hudson Valleys new Montgomery location is expected to be completed and occupied within 18 months.

Food Bank Of The Hudson Valley Announces Hiring Of New Director

CORNWALL-ON-HUDSON The Regional Food Bank of Northeastern New York and its branch, the Food Bank of the Hudson Valley , announce the hiring of the new Director of the Food Bank of the Hudson Valley.

Sara Gunn, most recently the Director of Mission Advancement at the Sisters of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, assumed her new role with FBHV on Dec. 14. Prior to her work at the Sisters of the Presentation, Gunn held positions with the Ursuline Sisters of the Eastern Province and the American Cancer Society in New Windsor and Poughkeepsie.

We are so thrilled that Sara is joining us and bringing her passion for helping others to our Food Bank, said Mark Quandt, Executive Director of the Regional Food Bank of NENY. Her extensive non-profit experience aligns with our mission to alleviate hunger and prevent food waste.

The FBHV, which is based in Cornwall-on-Hudson, helps feed thousands of New Yorkers each year through a network of more than 400 food pantries, soup kitchens, shelters, and other non-profit programs. In 2019, FBHV distributed over 16 million pounds of food in six counties of the lower Hudson Valley. As a result of the economic impact of COVID, the FBHV has distributed close to 20 million pounds of food through October of this year.

I am very happy to begin working with the staff and volunteers of the Food Bank of the Hudson Valley especially during these challenging times when hunger is wide-spread given the pandemic.

Food Bank Seeks Montgomery Warehouse

Having outgrown its Cornwall facility, the Food Bank of the Hudson Valley is looking to build a new 40,000 square foot distribution center in the Village of Montgomery.

Molly Nichol, CEO of the Regional Food Bank of Northeastern New York presented plans for a new $13 million facility at last weeks Montgomery Town Board meeting. That plan calls for the construction of a new 40,000 square foot warehouse near the intersection of Routes 416 and 211, next to the Aden Brook Farm.

Though the project is in the Village of Montgomery, and awaits approval by the Village of Montgomery Planning Board, the town board is submitting a grant application on its behalf. The town board voted to submit a Community Development Block Grant Application for $10,680,495 to help pay for the project.

Town of Montgomery Supervisor Brian Maher explained that the state has funding available under its Covid relief program and the project fits the criteria to be eligible for funding, so the town will submit the application on behalf of the Village of Montgomery.

Nichol said the proposed structure is 42 feet in height and will require a variance to exceed the villages 35-foot limit. It will provide the opportunity to stack food pallets five tiers in height, something not available at the present facility. The close proximity to Interstate 84 is another plus, she added.

The project also has the backing of Orange County Executive Steven Neuhaus.

What Is The Food Bank

The Food Bank of the Hudson Valley is dedicated to alleviating hunger, while preventing the waste of wholesome food. It is a branch of the Regional Food Bank of Northeastern New York and a member of Feeding America, the national food bank network.

The Regional Food Bank, based in Latham, New York, was created by a group of food pantry coordinators and anti-hunger advocates which began its operation in June of 1982. At that time, pantries, soup kitchens, and shelters for the homeless were experiencing a tremendous increase in the number of people requesting emergency food assistance because of government budget cuts and difficult economic times.

To serve agencies in the lower Hudson Valley, food was initially transported from the Regional Food Bank and distributed off the backs of trucks at a handful of member agency locations in the Hudson Valley area. As the need for food and agency membership increased, a physical presence was deemed necessary for greater efficiency and food safety. As a result, the Food Bank of the Hudson Valley was founded in 1990 in Newburgh, New York. This branch warehouse allowed increased donations from food companies and improved service to member agencies in the lower Hudson Valley area.

In 1994, the Food Bank outgrew its rented Newburgh location and moved to a larger, improved facility in Milton, New York. Member agency numbers continued to grow and the amount of food distributed increased steadily.

New York State Awards Food Bank Of Hudson Valley $107 Million To Build New Facility In Montgomery

ALBANYNew York Gov. Kathy Hochul announced on April 25th a $10.7-million award to Food Bank of the Hudson Valley for the construction of a new 40,000-square-foot food distribution warehouse in the Town of Montgomery.

State officials noted that the increased demand for emergency food assistance due to the COVID-19 pandemic necessitated a larger facility with additional capacity for cold storage and sorting. The new 40,000-square-foot warehouse is expected to benefit 179,000 low- to moderate-income New Yorkers currently receiving assistance from Hudson Valley food banks.

Sara Gunn, director of the Food Bank of the Hudson Valley, said that the new facility will double the not-for-profits storage and office capacity of its current location at 195 Hudson St. in Cornwall-on-Hudson. A firm date on the relocation has not been established. Gunn said that the Food Bank is hopeful it can complete the move to the new location at the corner of Route 416 and 211 adjacent to the new Medline facility, by the end of 2023. Its current landlord has agreed to have the Food Bank utilize its Cornwall space rent-free for the next two years.

Additional funding for the project includes a $1.9-million contribution from the Food Bank of the Hudson Valley and nearly $800,000 in private donations.

May Regional Food Bank Of Northeastern New York Lowers Costs With Solar Installations

COVID 19, Nutrition and Mental Health

The Regional Food Bank of Northeastern New York has completed two solar projects across nearly 112,000 square feet of warehouse space in Albany and the Village of Cornwall-on-Hudson, in Orange County. The installations at the two facilities comprised of a total of 2,673 solar panels, which is expected to produce approximately 973,000 kilowatt-hours of energy annually. The power generated by the system will help meet 60% of the facilities electricity needs and will lead to an estimated savings of approximately $520,000 over a 25-year power purchase agreement.

The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority facilitated the project through its solar incentives program under NY-Sun, a statewide initiative under Governor Andrew M. Cuomo to increase the number of solar electric systems across the State. The project was designed and built by Dynamic Energy Solutions, LLC and will be owned and operated by KIIT Renewable Energy .

We are always looking for ways to reduce our operating expenses, so that we can maximize our impact on our core mission to alleviate hunger and prevent food waste, said Mark Quandt, Executive Director of the Food Bank, switching to clean solar power does just that, allowing more resources to be allocated to help alleviate hunger in New York State.

Together, the Regional Food Bank and Food Bank of the Hudson Valley provide more than 35 million pounds of food each year to 1,000 member agencies in the 23 counties.
