Volunteers Keep Food Pantry Humming

North County Community Food Bank Reviews and Ratings
Sandy Harvey shows well stocked shelves of food bank.

Because it is difficult for people in the outlying areas and in the county to access programs for low-income people in downtown Spokane, it makes sense to address concerns of people in North Spokane County in their own locations before they reach a crisis.

The North County Food Pantry at 40015A N. Collins Road in Elk is doing that in one of the poorest areas of the county with high unemployment and many seniors, said volunteer Bon Wakabayashi.

What Should I Bring To My Volunteer Shift

All volunteers are required to wear comfortable clothing and bring a positive attitude. The North County Food Bank does have lockers available for volunteers to use as needed. However, locks are not provided and we cannot be held responsible for lost, stolen or damaged items. We also encourage volunteers to stay hydrated by bringing a refillable water bottle, which can be refilled onsite using our water refill station.

Are There Any Physical Requirements

The majority of our volunteer opportunities are sorting, inspecting and repacking food for our hungry neighbors. These tasks require some level of physical activity from simply standing on concrete to actual lifting. If you require special accommodations please contact us at 630.443.6910 before registering.

Volunteer At The Food Bank

Volunteers are the heart and soul of the Food Banks mission. Every day, Food Bank volunteers are making a tangible contribution to our communities. Volunteers are vital to ensuring nutritious food reaches our neighbors in needs. We could never do this important work alone!

I enjoy volunteering immenselyit feels like genuinely useful work, and is a nice physical break from my screen-heavy job. Ive also enjoyed the opportunity to learn more about the food distribution system in the USto see what happens to extras/seconds/damaged/other unwanted items from supermarkets/producers, what happens to stuff you give to food drives, what the government does and doesnt do to ensure food security. -Volunteer

The Food Bank is honored to be certified by Points of Light as a Service Enterprise! The Mike And Beverly Smith Volunteer Center

Mike and Beverly Smith made a multi-year gift in 2020 to the Lowcountry Food Bank and Trident United Way to renovate space used by food bank volunteers and serve our neighbors needs throughout the tri-county. The Smiths gift, which has created and enhanced experiences for volunteers, will also help educate our volunteers about hunger issues and thank them for the impact they truly make for those who struggle to feed themselves. The Mike and Beverly Smith Volunteer Center tangibly reinforces how deeply the Smiths value our work. Mike and Beverly understand first-hand the fight against hunger. Volunteers contribute more than 51,000 hours annually to ensure that nutritious food reaches people who need it most.

Community Food Bank Volunteers Pitch In For United Way Of North Talladega County’s Food Giveaway

Volunteers help with United Way of North Talladega County food giveaway.

TALLADEGA United Way of North Talladega County President Valerie Burrage said she considered not having a monthly food giveaway in July.

With so many people being on vacation, we were concerned about being able to get enough volunteers,” she said. “Then the people from the Community Food Bank of Central Alabama said they would help, so we went ahead.

As it turned out, she didnt need to worry. Somewhere between 30 and 40 volunteers showed up in the parking lot of Trinity United Methodist Church and helped hand out 400 boxes of food before running out and having to call it a day. It took about two hours.

In addition to the United Way and the Food Pantry, volunteers came from the Talladega Lions Club, The Presbyterian Home for Children, Talladega High School and Cricket Wireless, who also supplied a tent.

Those who drove up to collect the food Thursday were treated to watermelons, 50 cases of grapes, 20 cases of catfish and 89 cases of whole milk, as well as an array of canned and boxed goods. There were cars parked in the former Piggly Wiggly parking lot, waiting in the sweltering heat, for up to two hours before the giveaway began.

Weve been coming here ever since COVID-19 hit, Ponder-Twardy said. We were coming every two weeks then. Were doing every month now, but there is definitely still a need out there.

The United Way kickoff for the coming year will be in September.

What Should I Wear

Food Bank recommends casual and comfortable clothing. Close-toed shoes, tennis shoes or boots ARE REQUIRED. No heels, open-toe shoes, or sandals are permitted in the warehouse. The warehouse is not temperature-controlled, so volunteers are encouraged to wear seasonal clothing. In addition, please be mindful of the level of appropriateness of your dress, as we have a wide range age groups that visit our warehouse. Please do not wear or bring anything that may be considered offensive.
