Northwest Arkansas Food Bank was established in 1988 by a group of concerned citizens who saw the need for hunger assistance in Benton, Washington, Madison and Carroll counties. In 2017 the Northwest Arkansas Food Bank distributed more than 12.5 million pounds of food. Together with more than 160 partner agencies, the food bank is able to reach out to those in need providing nutritious food to children, the working poor and senior citizens. The Northwest Arkansas Food Bank is an affiliate of Feeding America and a founding member of the Arkansas Hunger Relief Alliance.

In June of 1986, the Crawford-Sebastian Community Development Council in Fort Smith formed the River Valley Regional Food Bank to address hunger in the region. Today, the food bank, a partner with Feeding America, distributes more than 9.5 million pounds of food annually to people facing hunger in eight West Central Arkansas counties. Partnering with the food bank are 190 nonprofit agencies including food pantries, soup kitchens, senior citizen centers, youth programs and emergency shelters. One in six people, and one in four children, suffer from food insecurity in the River Valley region.

Food Bank Of North Central Arkansas Celebrates Hunger Action Month With Grant Announcements

The Food Bank of North Central Arkansas is celebrating Hunger Action Month with the announcement of over $500,000 worth of grants to the Food Bank and its network of partner hunger relief organizations.

These grants will benefit three focus areas at the Food Bank: childhood hunger, cold storage for food bank partner hunger relief agencies, and technology upgrades for local agencies served by the Food Bank. In all, the Food Bank will receive over $148,000 and local agencies across their nine county service area will receive $355,000 to assist them in their efforts to reduce hunger across the region.

Fourteen local school districts will receive $220,000 in funding for their school food pantries that will provide food for thirty-six weeks between now and the end of August 2023. $15,000 grants have been awarded to thirteen schools returning to the program this year including: Bruno-Pyatt, Calico Rock, Cotter, Flippin, Harrison, Jasper, Mammoth Spring, Marshall, Mountain View, St. Joe, Viola, Western Grove and Yellville-Summit. Cave City will receive a $25,000 first year grant through the program, and each school will receive a $5,000 food credit from the Food Bank of North Central Arkansas. Of the $220,000 awarded to local schools, over $150,000 will be used for food purchases for their programs.

Serving Our Community In Need

The Norfork Community Care Program Food Pantry is open Tuesday and Wednesday from 9:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. The Food Pantry is located in Norfork, Arkansas just across from the Norfork Cafe on Highway 5 South. If you will be visiting the Food Pantry for the first time it is located at the back of the same building as the Norfork Community Care Program Thrift Store. Individuals are asked to bring their drivers license, state issued ID or a current utility bill for proof of address.

The Norfork Community Care Program Thrift Store is open Tuesday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., and Saturdays from 10 am until 2 pm. The Thrift Store’s mission is to help people reuse and re-purpose gently used items at an affordable price. Proceeds benefit the Norfork Community Care Program Food Pantry.
