Ameren Crews To Louisiana
Meanwhile, utility crews from central Illinois will take a caravan to Louisiana to help restore power for hundreds of thousands of people following Hurricane Ida.
Ameren Illinois spokesperson Brian Bretsch said the utility plans to dispatch 300 workers from Illinois and Missouri for a two-week deployment to Baton Rouge.
When a utility asks for something like that, means that the devastation in a particular area is quite catastrophic, said Bretsch, adding that Ameren is prepared to send a second crew in mid-September if needed.
Ameren estimates about 900,000 Louisiana residents are without power as of Tuesday.
Bretsch said the utility is answering a request for mutual aid from the utility company Entergy. He said finding volunteers for restoration trips like this is never a problem.
Its when we have a situation like Hurricane Ida that slammed Louisiana, volunteers pretty much pop up within the first hour or two after the storm has rolled through saying, If you need me I will go, Bretsch said.
Ameren has sent mutual aid crews to help following several major weather disasters, including Hurricane Katrina in 2005, Hurricane Sandy in 2012 and Hurricanes Irma and Maria in Puerto Rico in 2017.

Local Food Banks Continue To See A Decline In Donations
PEORIA – Food shortages and inflation continue to be a problem for food banks in central Illinois.
Leaders at the Midwest Food Bank Peoria Division say they are getting around 20% fewer donations than normal, but the demand for food at local pantries is about 25% higher right now.
Food banks are seeing an uptick in drink donations, but dry and canned goods are at nearly an all-time low.
Leaders say right now, monetary donations are the best way to help food banks provide for underserved families.
For every one dollar that we get, we can turn that into $30 worth of food, executive director Monica Scheuer said. We can spend the money on the fuel in our trucks to get it, we can buy food, or we can buy bags to bag food.
On Saturday, July 16, all three Midwest Food Bank locations are hosting a special Taste and Tour event to raise money and show people how the process works.
The event will include a special drive-thru tour, and the food bank will provide visitors with lunch.
Tickets for the event can be purchased at this link.
What We Aim To Solve

Food insecurity exists in every county in the United States. The most recent government data shows that 48.1 million peopleincluding 15.3 million childrenlive in households that lack the means to get enough nutritious food on a regular basis. That means 1 in 5 children under the age of 18 struggles with food insecurity. Every day MFB redistributes good, wholesome food that would otherwise be wasted. “Our hope is to help bridge the gap between prosperity and poverty in our community.” – David Kieser, Co-Founder & President / CEO.

Midwest Food Bank Red Cross Assist Hurricane Ida Relief Efforts Ameren Crews Head To Louisiana
Central Illinois agencies are chipping in to assist relief efforts in Louisiana following Hurricane Ida.
Midwest Food Bank, American Red Cross, and Ameren Illinois will send resources to the region to help people impacted by the hurricane that produced widespread damage, flooding, and power outages.
Rollie Reed, operations manager for Midwest Food Banks Peoria Division, said its first shipments of food, water, hygiene kits, and cleaning supplies are on the way to the region.
Presently, we have had two loads that have shipped out as of this morning, said Reed. There’s other loads in process now when I mean loads, we’re building up over 1,000 family food boxes to a semi load that we’re sending down to around the New Orleans area.
The nonprofits Normal and Morton divisions also are assembling disaster relief boxes this week. The agency coordinates with the Salvation Army to direct aid where its needed and partners with Somebody Cares to provide shipments of supplies such as bleach, gloves, and towels to assist clean-up efforts.
We are ready to support the families impacted by Hurricane Ida, Normal division executive director Tara Ingham said in a news release. We are thankful for the faithful support of volunteers and generous donors making our disaster relief efforts possible.
Lisa Martin, executive director of the Morton division, said one food box typically sustains a family of four over 4-5 days. She said assistance could continue for more than a month.

‘it’s Amazing What You Can Do Here’
All of that was evident to Todd Osing, one of the volunteers. Also volunteering were three others who work in Osing’s financial-planning office, which is located about 150 yards from the food bank warehouse near Allen and Townline roads.
“It’s quite an operation,” said Osing, a first-time volunteer. “It’s amazing what you can do here.”
About half the boxes the food bank produces are to be distributed to senior-citizen residences and assistance organizations. Other not-for-profit groups account for the rest.

Scheuer envisions a long food bank-Christmas Fund association. Osing envisions the same, too, for his volunteerism there.
“You see it all around us there are people that are in need, they need help, and this is a very small part that we can play and have an impact on our community in a very positive way,” he said.
Christmas Fund donations can be made online at christmasfunddonation.com. They also can be mailed to Journal Star Christmas Fund, P.O. Box 1549, Peoria, IL 61655. The fundraising goal this year is $145,000.

Our Work Is Just Beginning

Drew Brown, regional communications manager for Peorias Central Illinois Chapter of the American Red Cross, said more than 20 volunteers from Illinois region are heading to areas hit hard by the storm to lend assistance, including two who departed from Peoria on Sunday.
For the American Red Cross, our work is just beginning. Right now, we’re focused on providing safe shelter, meals, and comfort for those impacted by Hurricane Ida, and that includes those in Louisiana and Mississippi, said Brown.
More deployments may follow in the days and weeks to come as the amount damage becomes more apparent and the needs increase, said Drew, adding as of Monday night, about 1,500 people were staying at 38 Red Cross shelters across the Gulf states.
More than a million people in the region are without power, and with temperatures hitting 90 degrees today, she said. A lot of homes and businesses are destroyed cell phones, water, sewers are down in area. There’s a lot of damage down there, so there’s a lot of help to give and people are still in need.

In 2007, as the demand from partner nonprofit agencies grew, Midwest Food Bank Peoria opened as the second MFB location. Beginning with 65 agency partners, MFB Peoria now serves over 300 nonprofits. These are located primarily in the western half of Illinois, but Eastern Iowa and parts of Missouri and Kentucky are served through satellite distributions. Learn more about how you can help through our volunteer opportunities.
MFB Peoria is the origin of Tender Mercies, MFB’s nutritious packaged meal of rice, beans, and chicken-flavored seasoning. Volunteers initially packed the dry meals by hand at MFB Peoria. The program eventually moved to the Morton Illinois location.
How Does A Food Pantry Work
Food Banks acquire large donations of edible but unmarketable food from the food industry and distribute it to organizations that feed hungry people. Then they provide this food to family in a need.
Our vision is simplebring financial security, dignity, and savings to the millions experiencing financial stress.

What Is The Difference Between A Food Bank And A Food Pantry
Independent community food pantries are self-governing and usually distribute food to their clients on a once-a-month basis. A food bank is the storehouse for millions of pounds of food and other products that go out to the community. A food pantry functions as the arms that reach out to that community directly.
Boxes Filled In Assembly
Last Friday morning, about 20 volunteers surrounded long tables and worked in assembly-line fashion to fill the Christmas Fund boxes, which are about 1 foot square. Work began the previous evening.
Among items in each container are a can of green beans, a box of macaroni and cheese and a box of corn-muffin mix. Potatoes and a ham are to accompany each box. The Journal Star marshals the food donations.
New to the boxes this year is a Midwest Food Bank specialty Tender Mercies, a dry package of rice, beans and seasoning. According to Scheuer, the food bank suggested the addition.
Season of giving:After losing job, Washington grandmother struggles with giving grandkids special Christmas
“We said, ‘Hey, could we offer a product to put in there to make it more robust, to stretch the box a little bit more?’ They’re like, ‘Yeah, absolutely,'” she said.
The Tender Mercies inclusion is evidence of how the food bank relationship with the Christmas Fund has evolved, according to Scheuer.
” we were just a space, and the Journal Star would come in and set everything up, get everything here, do it, take it and then go,” she said. “But it’s really grown into a great partnership.
“We’re helping a little bit more. We’re giving suggestions on how to maybe make it more effective, either logistically or planning.”
