Midwest Food Bank Holds Monthly Food Distribution Event In Manchester
MANCHESTER, Conn. The Midwest Food Bank of New England is fulfilling a need with one donation at a time.
Monday was distribution day at the food bank. Its goal is to deliver up to $18 million worth of food across New England each year.
Our agencies that we serve, which are food pantries, shelters, soup kitchens theyre scheduled to come in and they shop for free food, said Jan Young, the executive director of the Midwest Food Bank of New England said.
The 55,000 square-foot facility opened a year ago on Adams Street in Manchester, joining the fight against food insecurity. Representatives from 84 different agencies stroll the aisles monthly, shopping for items ranging from beverages to cereals, and volunteers are there to help.
They help them walk through the line and pick what they need, Young said. We drive their vehicles inside our building or load them back at the dock.
This is a game changer because we dont have to go around searching for where were going to get food from, said Winifred Billington, the Hartford Knights program coordinator.
In addition to the dry goods, theres frozen food stored in two deep freezers.
The Hartford Knights is one of the agencies being served, receiving snacks for a summer youth program and food for its annual Day of Caring.
The Day of Caring, we know were going to get a lot of pantry food, Billington said. We know were going to get a lot of snacks, so this has taken a lot of weight off our shoulders.

What We Aim To Solve

Food insecurity exists in every county in the United States. The most recent government data shows that 48.1 million peopleincluding 15.3 million childrenlive in households that lack the means to get enough nutritious food on a regular basis. That means 1 in 5 children under the age of 18 struggles with food insecurity. Every day MFB redistributes good, wholesome food that would otherwise be wasted. “Our hope is to help bridge the gap between prosperity and poverty in our community.” – David Kieser, Co-Founder & President / CEO.

Three of the pallets were then transported to The Salvation Army in Providence, Rhode Island. The other five pallets will be distributed throughout Connecticut. In total, the eight pallets will provide 11,000 meals throughout The Salvation Armys Southern New England Division to families who are in need.
Since Hurricane Katrina, The Salvation Army and Midwest Food Bank have partnered together to deliver over 275,000 food boxes during disaster events.
Food Bank Opens In Manchester With Hopes Of Distributing $30m Worth Of Food Throughout New England Each Year
MANCHESTER, Conn. A new food bank has opened in Manchester with the goal of helping families fight food insecurity across New England.
Midwest Food Bank has made Manchester their New England home. The charity organization with facilities as far as Kenya is ready to hit the ground running in Connecticut.
Not just a warehouse, its a distribution center, Jan Young said. We have no desire to store the food. Get it in, and get it out.
Young is the executive director of the 55,000 square foot warehouse that holds approximately $1 million worth of food.
Youll find a variety of items at the warehouse. Every dollar that is donated turns into $30 of distributed food for families in need.
Especially with the pandemic, families on edge, many are using them for the first time, Young said.
Shes referring to the many local pantries in the state that have reached out, expressing a need for their food. The items may be approaching a sell-by date or were donated from a damaged case, but are all safe for consumption. That includes those in their 40-foot refrigerated containers.
They are looking to acquire more nutritious food, but that will require funding.
We are trying to up the ante on the food we distribute because we care about peoples health, Young said.
Since the pandemic started, one in five Americans has been reliant on pantries or donated food. Young said their goal is to distribute $30 million worth of food each year throughout New England.
