What We Aim To Solve

One in six Ohioans, including one in four children, is at-risk for hunger. In Franklin County alone our hungry neighbors miss 69 million meals annually. This is an average of three missed meals per week or the equivalent of an entire day without food. The face of hunger knows no age, race, ethnicity, or gender. Hunger in our community takes the form of a mother who is picking up her child from school, a father racing between two jobs, a child playing during recess, or the elderly couple holding hands in the park. It takes only one illness, one job loss, or one unexpected expense for many in our community to find themselves in a position where food is no longer certain. However, when our neighbors find themselves in need, Mid-Ohio Foodbank, in collaboration with our extensive network of agency partners, is there to provide access to healthy foods and nourishing meals.

You Can Donate An Animal

Mid-Ohio Foodbank has teamed up with 4-H and county fairs to put locally-raised meat on the tables of our hungry neighbors. Animals will be selected at county fair auctions. Once a buyer wins the auction and pays the premium bid and market value, they can donate the animal to Mid-Ohio Foodbank. The Foodbank will handle transportation and the harvesting and processing fees. Donors will receive a donation receipt for a possible tax deduction.

Raising $41 Million Not Too Hard Fundraising Co

Carrier Transicold Donates to Mid

The collective announced the completion of its fundraising campaign at the Monday event. Kirt Walker, CEO of Nationwide and one of the campaign’s co-chairs, said fundraising wasn’t that hard.

“Everyone recognized that times were tough,” he said.

Some of the biggest donors to the “Rooted in You” campaign included the Nationwide Foundation with $5 million and the AEP Foundation with $3 million. The Osteopathic Heritage Foundations contributed $2 million toward the Norton Road building.

Terri Donlin Huesman, president and CEO of the Osteopathic Heritage Foundations, said a big reason for its donation was the group’s heritage in the neighborhood. It used to own OhioHealth Doctors Hospital on West Broad Street.

“Our mission is to improve health and the quality of life. Our support of the Norton market is an example,” she said.

Also included in the $41 million raised by Mid-Ohio was Franklin County’s contribution of $7 million from its federal American Rescue Plan money to pay for a 12,000-square-foot freezer building at the food collective’s Grove City headquarters.

Habash said another part of the $41 million will go toward the Mid-Ohio Farm on the Hilltop, a seven-acre site off Wheatland Avenue just north of West Broad Street where vegetables such as lettuce, peppers, tomatoes and cucumbers are grown in stacked layers.

It Takes All Of Us To Create Hunger

Mid-Ohio Food Collective began assisting people struggling with food insecurity in 1980, first as Operation Feed and later as Mid-Ohio Foodbank. In its early days, the organization focused on emergency feeding, and while that is still a large part of the group’s mission, its understanding of hunger has evolved over the decades.

Mid-Ohio Food Collective knows food banking alone will not end hunger. By shifting the focus to the root causes of food insecurity, MOFC is better equipped to help its customers succeed in other areas of their lives and set them up for long-term success. MOFC focuses on the aspects of life that impact a persons ability to succeed and thrive, all with the goal of ending hunger. By providing fresh, nutritious food to its customers, the people MOFC serves can put their limited resources to other expenses, including housing, childcare, and health care.

Growing the organization includes partnering with other companies that also have a mission to help the community prosper. MOFC is grateful for the continued support of its partners Kroger, AEP, and Molina.
