County Executive Calvin Ball Announces Innovative Hoco Harvest Program Providing Venison To Local Food Bank
Media Contact: Scott Peterson, Director of Communications, Office of Public Information, 202-277-9412
Most farmers realize there is an overpopulation of deer in Howard County, which is evidenced by significant crop losses and the destruction that deer do to our forest communities, said David Plummer, District Manager for the Office of Soil Conservation. HoCo Harvest for the Hungry serves a dual purpose by encouraging hunters to harvest more deer and providing critical food resources for people in need during the difficult winter months in the middle of a challenging pandemic. Utilizing the bounty while helping others is a true opportunity that local hunters are embracing, said Kathy Johnson, Director of Agriculture Business Development for the EDA. It is my hope that this program will continue for many years.

Independent community food pantries are self-governing and usually distribute food to their clients on a once-a-month basis.
