HOWARD COUNTY, MD The Patch Holiday Food Drive is raising money for Feeding America and the food banks, pantries and meal programs in Howard County.
The cumulative effect of 39 weeks of historic joblessness and business failures because of the coronavirus pandemic is as plain as the bare cupboards in millions of kitchens across America: As many as 50 million people, including a projected 10.1 percent of people in Howard County, dont have enough to eat.
You can help by giving to Feeding America in Patchs Holiday Food Drive.
Contributions are tax-deductible, so if you give now, youll be able to include your donation in your 2020 tax return.
The food drive runs through Dec. 31. For every $1 you give, Feeding America is able to supply 10 meals.
Many of the families experiencing food insecurity dont qualify for federal nutrition programs, and they need to rely on their food banks and other hunger relief organizations to have enough to eat, according to Feeding America.
Patch and Feeding America teamed last summer to address the growing hunger crisis in America, connecting readers with the organizations 200 member food banks that serve 60,000 food pantries and meal programs, and providing an easy way to donate money to help their neighbors.

The Food Bank provides emergency food grants to families to ensure families have adequate nutritious food. Eligibility is based on income. The Food Bank also warehouses food for distribution to other food pantries in the County. One of these may be closer to your home and provide easier access to emergency food services. We encourage families to use the Food Pantry closest to their home. The primary source of products for the Food Bank is donations from groups and individuals who conduct food drives in their community, at their schools or workplaces.

We have a patient- and family-centered philosophy to our care, and we recognize the important role family and friends play in the healing process. We try to make our visiting hours as flexible and patient-directed as possible. Family and primary support persons are welcome to visit any time.There are some units or areas where a patients requests, clinical needs or unit logistics require visitation limitations. To respect the privacy of our patients and to comply with Federal patient privacy laws, individuals who are not visiting a specific patient with permission are not permitted in patient care areas.During flu season especially, we recommend practicing proper hand hygiene and other infection control measures when visiting the hospital.Music, pet therapy and other activities can offer comfort and healing for patients. Any proposed program or activity that would take place in the hospital and involve our patients must be planned with sufficient notice for staff coordination. Please allow three weeks notice. Due to limited resources, we are not able to accommodate all requests. To explore a program or activity at the hospital, contact our volunteer services office at 410-884-4580.

Donation And Activity Guidelines
Our patients and staff greatly appreciate community donations and volunteer hours. When considering donations of items or services to the hospital, please note the following descriptions of what we are able to accept in the way of donations. There are some restrictions on items that can be donated, due to infection control standards and general patient safety.
What we can accept:
- New, unused items in original packaging that have been purchased within the last three months.
- New, unused handmade items
- Monetary donations.
- New stuffed toys more than 18-inches tall.
- Stuffed toys from vending machines or carnivals.
- Food and/or candy.
- Latex balloons or anything containing latex.
- Toys with violent themes or that are insensitive to a culturally diverse population.
- Medications, medical equipment.
