Car Wash With A Twist

This funny event is great for students. Donors can pay to have their car washed by students, but the catch is the car-washers cant use their hands. Community members will get great entertainment as the teens scramble to clean the cars with mouths, backsides, and feet. Its a good time for everyone. Make it more competitive and have the teens compete as teams. Donors can sponsor a team and compete for the prize!

Things to Consider:

  • This is a great event to live stream on say a school website or student groups social media page.
  • Have a photographer and sell the snaps to volunteers and parents later.
  • Have the event in a local visible place like the school parking lot or city park.

Follow These Steps To Organize A Food Drive On Your Own Or With A Local Food Bank

by Maureen Vaught

Master gardener Alex Portelli was having lunch at an elementary school in Marion, North Carolina, where he volunteers, when two students, brothers, sat next to him in the cafeteria. One brother pulled out his lunch and started eating, recalls Portelli, president of the Rotary Club of Marion. I asked the other brother where his lunch was, and he said, Its not my turn to eat today. I thought, Oh, no. Not during my lifetime. Thats the type of personal story that gets us involved. Portelli is now the chair of his countys local food advisory council, and hes active in the Rotary Zones 33-34 Hunger Challenge.

Rotary members in many places hold collection drives to help people, particularly families with children, get the food they need. As the coronavirus pandemic continues to affect jobs and school food programs, that need is growing. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, the COVID-19 pandemic could add as many as 132 million people to the total number of undernourished in the world this year.

Tips For Donating Food After Events

There are safe, efficient, and legal ways for event professionals to provide leftover food to charitable organizations.

With most caterers building overages into their event plans, much wholesome, edible, and nourishing food goes to waste every dayand it doesnt have to. Event professionals who donate leftover food following events are protected under the law, and the process can be easy, safe, and streamlined. Here are five tips for how to make it happen.

1. Plan aheadDonating food following an event cant be an afterthought. Planners need to Integrate the intended donation into the pre-planning process, as they would any other event detail.

Food donation starts with simple planning and strategies. Given the opportunity, before you sign a contract with a caterer, hotel, or resort, let them know that you are writing into the contract a sentence that states, All leftover food, prepared but not served, cannot be thrown away, but must go to an antihunger agency, says Syd Mandelbaum, C.E.O. and founder of Rock and Wrap It Up, an organization that works throughout North America to recover leftover food. We have found that most caterers work with 5 to 10 percent overage, so there is a good chance there will be leftover food to help feed the hungry in the city where the event is being held.

It is important to note that the Bill Emerson Good Samaritan Laws protect food donors as long as safe food handling is used, Mandelbaum says.

How To Calculate The Value Of Your Tax

Now comes the tricky part. How much can you deduct from your taxes? There are a couple of rules to keep in mind:

  • If you donate cash to a food bank, make sure you get proper documentation. This could be in the form of a canceled check or receipt. If your donation is at least $250, you will need an official receipt from the charity that confirms the amount you gave.
  • The process isnt as straightforward for food you donate from your kitchen or purchase from the grocery store for the express purpose of giving. The general rule is that the amount you can deduct is the foods fair market value. So, if you donate $100 worth of groceries, you can deduct $100. If you bought the items on sale and only spent $70, you can still deduct the entire $100 based on the fair market value formula of the groceries.
  • If you operate a food-based business like a restaurant, grocery store, etc., you must submit a Donation of Food Inventory Worksheet to the IRS. Theres also an additional statement youll have to obtain from the donee confirming that they wont resell the food you donated.

    Offer The Sponsor Incentives

Sponsorship has to be a give-and-take relationship. Sponsors want as much bang for their buck, of course. So what will the sponsors get out of funding your event?

Here are some ideas to help sweeten the deal:

    • For trade shows or exhibitions, giving the sponsor a free booth.
    • Place the sponsors name or logo on event promotional banners and flyers.
    • Mention the sponsors company in your blog posts, email newsletters, and social media posts.
    • Give event-related freebies or discounts to customers that purchase the sponsors product or sign up for its service.
    • Include the sponsors logo in all of your promotional gear.
    • Encourage your social media followers to like or share the sponsors content.

If youre willing to give more than take, it shows the sponsors that youre serious about making the event a success.

James Barron 37 Killed Nov 28 While Delivering Food On Jacksonvilles Eastside

    Vic Micolucci, I-Team reporter, anchor

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. A Jacksonville family is making a desperate plea for answers, weeks after someone killed a father of six.

The widow of 37-year-old James Barron told News4JAX that he was making a food delivery for DoorDash on East 21st Street on Nov. 28 when he was fatally shot. Police havent made any arrests.

Its just so hard, said widow Ashly Barron.

Her world has been turned upside down with the unexpected and tragic loss of her husband.

She said his 20-year-old daughter was in the car outside of the complex where he was delivering food. She witnessed the deadly shooting.

Someone came out and just started shooting at him, Ashly Barron said. Didnt say anything, just walked up and started shooting. … They didnt take anything.

James Barron leaves behind six children from 8 to 20 years old.

He was a great father and a great husband, his widow said from the steps of the Jacksonville Sheriffs Office on a rainy Thursday morning. All of us are still in a daze. We dont believe it. I dont think our youngest son really gets it.

She noted that JSO has been working hard on the case and detectives have been in constant contact with her.

JSO detectives were unable to comment on the case Thursday due to Floridas Marsys Law, which keeps the names and information of crime victims protected unless specifically released by the family.

    Where To Get Food Donations

Foodbanks not receiving enough donations to meet demand | 5 News

The need is great, but she says donations have gone way down over the past couple months.

Food prices have gone up, Wallace said. Its hard to give away food when food is hard to get for yourself.

With hundreds needing assistance from FSD at any given time, she says drives like this are crucial to keeping help available.

If youre going to donate food, make sure youre checking your expiration dates, and think of food that you yourself would want peanut butter, canned protein like tuna, those are really, really valuable in our world, she said.

Monetary donations are always welcome, too. Wallace said that $1 covers the cost of three meals.

Passmore said the City will likely organize similar events in the future thanks to the success of the November food drive.

    Save Money On Groceries

If you do have some money, it’s not too hard to spend it wisely. It’s not hard to save money on groceries and yet get good food each day. One of the best tips include create a weekly budget for food, and use cash or a separate bank account especially for this budget. Spend only on food that’s good for you and healthy. Go especially for greens, whole wheat food and legume such as beans and lentils. The latter is considered staple food. Don’t buy the precooked stuff, as it’s a lot cheaper soaking the legume overnight yourself.

Know that it’s a journey. Often it’s harder in the beginning but once you get rolling it gets easier. See this good example of a one person household who went down from averaging 5$ a day towards a little bit less than 1$ a day on food spending.
