Organize A Food Drive
A food drive turns food donation into a community effort. Ask local businesses and organizations if you may place collection boxes within their buildings so others can chip in. Tape a sign to each box indicating why the food is being collected and whom it will benefit — typically, a local shelter or organization that serves free meals. Be sure to post that only non-perishable goods can be accepted, such as boxed or canned items that can be kept in a pantry. Post notices about your collection effort on your community’s online forums or on public bulletin boards in places such as independent coffee shops. Visit the box locations on a weekly basis, emptying or replacing the boxes as needed. Tell a local food pantry or soup kitchen in advance that you plan to donate a quantity of items so you can arrange a drop-off time.
Potential Funding For Food Banks
Recycling Market Development Zone Loan Program. Food banks may qualify as a recycling manufacturer under the waste prevention category for CalRecycles Recycling Market Development Zone loan program. The loan can provide funding for working capital, daily operating expenses, equipment, such as trucks and refrigeration units, leasehold improvements, such as expanding an existing building, and real estate.
Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund Loan Program. Food banks may also be a part of an organics composting/anaerobic digestion project and the organics infrastructure project may qualify for CalRecycles Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund loan program, which can provide funding for equipment, real estate, and leasehold improvements.

Reusing Food From A Buffet To Feed The Homeless
According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency, approximately 96 billion tons of food goes to waste each year — more than one quarter of the nations food supply. Additionally, the U.S. spends a total cost of $1 billion annually to dispose of this excess food.
In its “Waste Not, Want Not program, the EPA suggests mitigating food waste by donating food items to homeless shelters, soup kitchens and community food banks. By repurposing leftover items from a buffet, you can avoid food waste and fill empty plates at the same time.

Ask the organization for a rundown of its food quality and safety standards to determine if any of your leftovers are ineligible for donation. Some organizations can’t accept prepared foods, foods that have been reheated or any foods that have sat out on a buffet. However, even in this case, you may be able to donate leftover supplies that are still in food-grade packaging, such as unopened cans or bags of produce.

Obtain an appropriate number of coolers. To avoid purchasing expensive coolers you don’t need or cheap disposable Styrofoam ones, ask friends and colleagues if they have any coolers to lend. Collect empty boxes to transport the food, and supply enough ice to keep perishables cold during transportation.

Tyler Thrift Unites Community To Assist Homeless Man During Time In Need
Tommy Smith shops for clothes, food and necessities to keep him warm with the funds of the local community.
In less than 24 hours, a single post on social media raised enough money to help Tommy Smith get food, clothes, and a hotel stay as an arctic blast hit the region.
Smith experiences homelessness. Kayla Ivey, owner of Tyler Thrift, said Smith has been coming to her business every day for the past four years and she knew she had to help him get a place to stay during this week’s cold weather.
I didn’t want him to be outside in it, so I made a post. Because we just did Christmas Under the Bridge , I kind of used all my extra funds on that, so I knew I couldn’t do it alone. I posted on our Facebook and within 24 hours, we had $1,000 raised, she said.
With the money, Ivey said Smith was taken shopping for clothes and other items to keep him warm, along with food, coloring books and a hotel stay.
He was super excited. I don’t think he’s been shopping in a store like that for probably 20 years. He was overwhelmed because we told him, You can get whatever you want here. And he was most excited to sleep in a bed because he said he hadn’t slept in a bed in four years. He was super excited to just sit in a bed and watch TV, Ivey said.
In 24 hours, $1,000 was raised for Tommy Smith by local East Texas community members. The money was used for a hotel, clothes, food and necessities to keep him warm.

The Causes Of Hunger Among Homeless People

Most often, there is an objection to having groups of homeless people congregate in public spaces, where the quality of life of housed citizens may be affected. El Pasoans Fighting Hunger Food Bank
El Pasos food bank needs volunteers to help assemble meals for migrants. The nonprofit is putting together breakfast bags, sandwiches and other food to distribute in Downtown El Paso and other locations. Volunteers will also be assembling kits with items such as baby wipes, diapers and formula.
Most volunteer work will take place at the El Pasoans Fighting Hunger warehouse in the Lower Valley at 9541 Plaza Circle. Other volunteer work will take place in the streets to distribute necessities. The American Red Cross is working with the food bank to supply cots, blankets and hygiene products.

Not every charity you come across is genuine. There is a very thin line between legit charities and ones that are a scam. Below are characteristics of charities you should NEVER donate to.
- Do not donate to big charities most of them are less transparent with how they spend the money. They are likely to divert the money to other things such as disaster relief efforts.
- Some charities pressure you to donate now. Some even go to an extent of making you feel guilty for not donating. Do not donate to such charities. A trustworthy charity may welcome your donation when you feel ready.

Limited Liability Protection For Donors
The Bill Emerson Good Samaritan Food Donation Act of 1996 encourages the donation of food and grocery products to nonprofit organizations for distribution to needy individuals. The Act exempts persons and gleaners who make good faith donations of food to nonprofit organizations that feed the hungry from liability for injuries arising from the consumption of the donated food.
Under the Bill Emerson Good Samaritan Food Donation Act, the following food donation standards apply:
Persons and gleaners : Persons and gleaners, including qualified direct donors, shall not be subject to civil or criminal liability arising from the nature, age, packaging, or condition of apparently wholesome food that the person or gleaner donates in good faith to a nonprofit organization for ultimate distribution to needy individuals.

Donations of apparently wholesome food by qualified direct donors must be made in compliance with applicable state and local health, food safety, and food handling laws .
