What theyve achieved: To date, InterCare has sent $23 million worth of medical aid to Sub-Saharan Africa, which has benefited around 11 million people. In 2019, the charity dispatched 81 medical packages, weighing 9,485kg, to Ghana, Malawi, Sierra Leone, Tanzania, and Zambia.

Ways to contribute: You can donate directly to InterCare through their website. You can also support the charity by sending your unwanted items to InterCare to be recycled. This process raises funds for vulnerable communities in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Hunger And Conflict Are Interconnected

East Africa Food Crisis: Oxfam are there

In 2022, violent conflict remains one of the main causes of world hunger, exacerbated by climate change and Covid-19. Food systems in conflict-affected countries are more vulnerable to setbacks and have fewer safety nets, and hunger is often used as a weapon of war. In order to sustainably end hunger, we will need to address some of these issues, pushing for peaceful resolutions to ongoing conflicts , while also guaranteeing greater safety measures for civilians living in conflict zones.

The hard truth is that we are not on track to reach Zero Hunger by 2030 estimates suggest that well still have 670 million people experiencing hunger by then. In fact, between the pandemic and widespread conflict , weve lost all progress made towards ending hunger since 2016.

Despite this, there is still reason to keep fighting. Here are nine key reasons why its important to end world hunger.

Save A Child Like Zakaria

Donate Food and Aid for Africa

2-year-old Zakaria has spent 12 days at UNICEF-supported Stabilization Center. He is being treated for severe acute malnutrition and is being fed high-calorie therapeutic food to aid his recovery.

His mother, Nimo says he had had diarrhea and had been vomiting for two days before she brought him to the hospital.

She left her two other children in the care of their grandmother in her village 70km away. She says food is scarce and the family has lost 40 of their 70 goats due to the drought.

I have never seen a drought as severe as this. I am worried about the children I left behind, she says.

Fawzia*story: Screening Children In Africa For Malnutrition

Small measuring tapes like these are a crucial part of Save the Childrens malnutrition screening programs, like the one that helped two-year old Fawzia. Fawzia received treatment for malnutrition at Save the Childrens health clinic on the outskirts of Baidoa in Somalia.

Somalia is one of the three countries in the Horn of Africa where a catastrophic food crisis is unfolding.

Health workers used a MUAC band to determine Fawzia’s level of malnutrition. MUAC tapes are very easy to use and can quickly deliver critical information. The bands are simply wrapped around the mid-point of the childs upper arm and, taking into account the childs ages, the circumference of their arm is measured against different colored zones on the band.

Green is normal, yellow is moderately malnourished and red is severely malnourished. If children in the red zone are not quickly treated, there is a very real risk the child could die or suffer from profound long-term health and development issues.

SomaliaMore than half of children aged under five in Somalia are facing acute malnutrition, with one in six suffering from the most deadly form as time to fend off famine starts to run out.

South SudanThe hunger crisis in South Sudan is especially dire, as roughly half the population is without enough food. Some 1.7 million people are facing emergency levels of hunger, which is one step away from famine. Nearly one million children under the age of five are acutely malnourished.

The World Produces Enough Food To Feed Everyone Living On It

One of the biggest reasons its important to end world hunger is that we already have the resources to do so. The world produces enough food to feed all 7.5 billion people and the World Food Programme has proven that it currently produces enough to feed up to 10 billion . Food production continues to increase faster than population growth.

The problem, as we explained in our piece on hunger myths and facts, is that food systems in areas with high levels of hunger and food insecurity are broken. Food waste, poor infrastructure, ineffective governance and social services, climate change, and conflict are all potential interruptions to those systems. Those are a lot of issues to address, but none are impossible.

Hunger Disproportionately Affects Children

Hunger affects people of every age and gender, but children suffer the effects of hunger the hardest. The first 1,000 days of a childs development from embryo to their second birthday is a critical time to deliver essential nutrients for their growth. Currently, 45 million children under the age of five suffer from wasting , which can increase the risk of child mortality twelvefold. Additionally, 149 million children in the same age range are affected by stunting , the result of nutritional deficiencies. Malnutrition is responsible for nearly 50% of all deaths of children under the age of five, and even those who survive into adolescence and adulthood can face a lifetime of consequences.
