Care International: Empowering Communities In Afghanistan
CARE International was founded in 1946 as the Cooperative for American Remittances to Europe, to provide aid packages to people during World War II. They continued to expand their work across continents, offering emergency aid to people affected by disasters or conflict. In 1961, they set up their mission in Afghanistan, but had to halt services in 1979. However, by 1989, they were delivering assistance to Afghanistan again, and have done so ever since. Today, their field office for Afghanistan is based in Kabul.

What Care Is Doing
CAREs focus is on immediate hunger relief and helping people build longer-term solutions to poverty. With our partners around the world, we are:
- saving lives now with immediate food supplies, cash vouchers, access to job opportunities, and prevention of life-threatening malnutrition
- growing resilience with more efficient farming practices, fertiliser alternatives, and safer food storage to help ensure farmers see a next harvest and
- changing systems by working with private sector partners and donors and advocating for governments to prevent repeat crises.
Farzaneh* visits a doctor at the CARE-run health clinic. Farzaneh is nine months pregnant, and had only seen a doctor once before during her pregnancy. She heard CARE was running a clinic in her community and, as she was feeling dizzy that day, decided to walk down and meet with one of the doctors. Farzaneh told a CARE staff member that if it werent for this clinic, she wouldnt have seen a doctor, as she cant afford the transport costs to travel to a regular clinic. This is unfortunately all too common in Afghanistan, which is why these critical health services are so important.
CARE has worked in Afghanistan since 1961. We are a trusted provider of humanitarian assistance, with strong relationships in local communities. Today, we work both directly and through local partners.

The most affected areas are often the remote ones, making it difficult for responders. Islamic Relief teams and donors helped survivors by providing shelter, food aid, cash assistance for emergency supplies, and more.

The Crisis In Afghanistan
Years of protracted conflict, the impact of Covid-19, the effects of climate change and now the current political turmoil, has pushed Afghanistan into one of the worlds worst humanitarian crises. Millions of lives are at stake, and children are already dying of hunger. Donate to support emergency relief in Afghanistan.
22 million people more than half of the population are facing acute food insecurity in the next three months
With rampant unemployment and food prices spiralling out of control, current projections show that 97 percent of Afghans will be in poverty within a year. More than 8 million people are just one step away from famine, 3 million children under five are expected to suffer from malnutrition, and 1 million of these children are at risk of dying.
Families have resorted to selling anything they have left of value, and tragically, children as young as five are being forced to work for more than twelve hours a day to afford their families a meal.
Afghans are being plunged deeper into poverty and as the harsh winter season approaches, theres even more of a terrifying risk to the lives of millions of Afghans. Without taking action now, there is a real risk of a famine in the next year.
We are facing a race against time and funds are rapidly needed to support vulnerable families by providing life-saving aid ahead of winter. Your donations are desperately needed to help provide emergency relief in Afghanistan, please Donate Now.

With at least 12 million people facing extreme hunger and more than 3 million people just one step away from famine, it is imperative that food and other essential aid reaches these communities immediately, or the death toll could be catastrophic.

The Challenges For Children In Afghanistan
There is not a single child in Afghanistan today that has not grown up amidst conflict.
Chronic conflict and political instability have strained Afghanistan throughout its modern history. Extreme natural disasters, especially droughts, have only made matters worse, thrusting the country’s economy and infrastructure into ruins and its people into extreme poverty.
Afghanistan is among the worst conflict-affected countries to be a child. Tragically, millions of Afghan children are growing up in high-intensity conflict zones, forcing many families to flee. Over half of the world’s refugees come from three countries Afghanistan ranks second, at 2.7 million.
- 1 child in 16 dies before their 5th birthday, 3 times that of the U.S.
- 19.7 million children and adults almost 50% of the population are going hungry
- 5 million children are one step away from famine
- 27% of children are engaged in child labor, instead of learning
- 55% of people live in poverty
