Food bank users dont need to make an appointment, but many food banks do require a referral from a social worker, GP or even the job centre. Typically, a food parcel is picked up by the person that needs it. However, during the coronavirus pandemic, some food banks are delivering parcels or allowing them to be picked up on behalf of someone else.

Who Runs All These Food Banks
Of the 2,000-plus food banks in the UK, around 1,200 are run by an anti-poverty charity called the Trussell Trust, with the remaining 900 or so run independently. Why You Should Donate To A Food Bank
Between 1 April 2021 and 31 March 2022, food banks in the Trussell Trusts UK wide network distributed over 2.1 million emergency food parcels to people in crisis.
This is an increase of 14 per cent compared to the same period in 2019/20, with 832,000 of the parcels going to children. Compared to five years ago, the need for food banks in The Trussell Trust network has increased by 81 per cent.
Over 14.5 million people are living in poverty in the UK, according to the Joseph Rowntree Foundation. That includes 4.3 million children.
The cost of living crisis will worsen poverty rates, with more than one million people set to be plunged into poverty this winter.
While anti-poverty campaigners lobby for long-term solutions like making the universal credit increase permanent, lifting the benefit cap and ending the two-child limit there remains an immediate need for people to get food even when they cant afford it.
If You Need To Use The Food Bank Again
If you needed a referral to use the food bank, you’ll need to get another one before you go back.
If you’ve been told your food bank has a limit on the number of times you can visit, it’s still worth asking if you really need the food. If you’re in this situation, talk to an adviser.
The adviser will ask you some questions about why you still need to use the food bank. They’ll refer you if they agree it’s the best way to help you. Even if they can’t refer you they’ll give you advice on debt or problems with benefits if you need it.

Some 26 years ago, as her youngest of three children headed into Grade 1, Richmond Hills Brenda Ewart took a part-time job as manager of the Richmond Hill Community Food Bank.
Our family attended Richmond Hill United Church where the food bank was located at the time, and the minister suggested I apply for the job, explained Ewart, stating one attraction was she could be home before her children returned from school.
But what started as a job, has become a passion and has consumed far more hours each week than originally forecast, and has pulled in her husband, Bob, as well. Although she has been paid, both have donated many volunteer hours over the years to what has become a labour of love for both.

How Do Food Banks Work
While there are other food banks, the largest is Feeding America, which runs 200 food banks that serve 60,000 food pantries nationwide. All food banks receive donated food stuff from manufacturers, retailers, growers, packers, and shippers of food, as well as through government agencies.

Sample Size And Attrition
We used the Generalized Linear Mixed Model Power and Sample Size software to estimate the sufficient sample size needed to model food security score, using a multi-level mixed effect model with repeated measures across four waves of data collection. The sufficient sample size estimated to detect a target power of 0.8 with a Type I error rate of 0.05 was 229 participants. Our sample size used in the analysis was 369 participants with 1040 observations across the 4 waves of data collection, which was sufficient to detect a meaningful effect.
Seven hundred and thirty participants were recruited in total at baseline. Participants who did not respond to at least two of the four data collection waves were excluded from the analysis, resulting in a sample of 401 participants at baseline.
Our colleague Enns performed a statistical comparison of all the recruited participants and those who completed the six-month follow-up and did not find any significant differences in their demographic characteristics i.e., the participants who were excluded at baseline or who did not complete the six-month survey were not significantly different from the follow-up participants, in terms of education, gender, ethnicity, being born in Canada, marital status or having dependents.
Data preparation, cleaning and analyses were conducted in Stata 13.1 and R Studio 4.0.1.
